Infant Crawling Variation Related to Subsequent Development

    No full text
Crawling is considered an important motor skill for infants. Although infants show variations in their crawling, the association between crawling variations and subsequent development is unexplored. This study investigates the difference in amount of crawling variation between infants with and without subsequent developmental delays. This longitudinal study evaluated crawling variations using crawling movement codes for infants with no noted structural anomaly in their central nervous system. Their developmental level was evaluated with the DENVER II (Japanese version) after age 2 years, and the cumulative numbers of crawling variations (CNCVs) between groups with and without suspected developmental delays were compared. Those infants with suspected developmental delays had significantly lower CNCV than their counterparts. Furthermore, the former were commonly suspected to have a delay in the DENVER II subdomain of fine motor/adaptive and language skills. Infants who experience fewer crawling variations may be at risk for subsequent developmental delays, especially in fine motor and language skills.Infants and Young Children, 38(2), pp.127-137; 2025journal articl

Communities of Practice, Beliefs, and Identity: Self-Reflection for Teacher Growth

    Get PDF
In this paper, the author presents an analysis of their own teaching history, supplied in the appendix, and how and why they have evolved to become the teacher they are today. The teacher’s history is examined through three frameworks: communities of practice, beliefs, and identity. Each framework is defined in relation to the profession of teaching and used to examine the teacher’s practice at different points in their career, and thus revealing their influence and impact on the evolution of the teacher.長崎大学言語教育研究センター論集, 13, pp51-60; 2025journal articl

Barriers to the widespread adoption of diagnostic artificial intelligence for preventing antimicrobial resistance

    Get PDF
Currently, antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a major public health challenge. The emergence of AMR, which significantly threatens public health, is primarily due to the overuse of antimicrobial agents. This study explored the possibility that the ethical dilemmas inherent in the context of AMR may hinder the adoption of diagnostic artificial intelligence (AI). We conducted a web survey across eight countries/areas to assess public preference between two hypothetical AI types: one prioritizing individual health and the other considering the global AMR threat. Our results revealed a societal preference for the utilization of both AI types, reflecting a conflict between recognizing the significance of AMR and the desire for individualized treatment. Interestingly, the survey indicated significant gender and age differences in AI preferences, and the majority of respondents opposed the idea of AI standardization in treatment. These findings highlight the challenges of incorporating AI into public health and the necessity of considering public sentiment in addressing global health issues such as AMR.Scientific Reports, 15(1), art. no. 13113; 2025journal articl

Air Temperature and Gastroenteritis Among Rohingya Populations in Bangladesh Refugee Camps

Importance: The Rohingya displaced population in Bangladesh is the largest stateless population in the world. Infectious diseases, such as gastroenteritis, respiratory infections, and fever, are among the major health problems the Rohingya population has faced. Although associations between gastroenteritis and air temperature have been reported in various regions, no study has yet been carried out among the displaced populations. Objectives: To evaluate the association between air temperature and risk of gastroenteritis among the forcibly displaced Rohingya population in refugee camps in Bangladesh. Design, Setting, and Participants In this cross-sectional study, daily time series data derived from facility-based case reports were collected in 2 clinics organized by the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees) in Kutupalong and Nayapara registered camps from January 1, 2019, to December 31, 2021. Statistical analysis was conducted from April 2023 to September 2024. Exposure: Hourly 2-m air temperature from ERA5-Land by the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts. Main Outcomes and Measures The daily number of gastroenteritis cases recorded in the camp clinics was the main outcome measure. Nonlinear lagged associations between daily temperature and gastroenteritis cases were modeled using a quasi-Poisson generalized linear model to account for overdispersion coupled with a distributed lag nonlinear model including a maximum 21-day lag. Covariates from the literature were adjusted in the model. Results: A total of 33 280 gastroenteritis cases (95% among individuals aged ≥5 years; 71% female) were recorded in Kutupalong and 31 165 gastroenteritis cases (99% among individuals aged ≥5 years; 67% female) were recorded in Nayapara. Further examination revealed a potential U-shaped curve in Kutupalong with minimum risk temperature (MRT) set at 26 °C. Cumulative relative risk (RR) at the 10th percentile temperature (21.1 °C) was 2.31 (95% CI, 1.18-4.65), while RR at 90th percentile temperature (28.5 °C) was 1.78 (95% CI, 1.24-2.56) relative to MRT. In Nayapara, a nearly linear risk increase was observed with decreasing temperature. Cumulative RR at the 10th percentile temperature (21 °C) was 1.32 (95% CI, 0.78-2.24), while the RR at the 90th percentile temperature (28.3 °C) was 0.75 (95% CI, 0.56-0.99). Lagged effects were delayed in nature. In Kutupalong, cold temperatures (10th percentile) were associated with statistically significant gastroenteritis risks at approximately 15 to 20 days (range: RR, 1.06 [95% CI, 1.00-1.13] to RR, 1.10 [95% CI, 1.00-1.21]). In Nayapara, gastroenteritis risks were correspondingly higher at longer lags (lag, 18 days; RR, 1.05 [95% CI, 1.00-1.10]). Conclusions and Relevance In this cross-sectional study of the Rohingya displaced population in Bangladesh, cold temperatures were associated with an increase in the risk of gastroenteritis. It is important to understand the association of climatic factors with the health of displaced communities, whose population is expected to grow in the future.JAMA Network Open, 8(4), art. no. e255768; 2025journal articl

Cross‐Organ Proteome Analysis Reveals Changes in Protein Expression Related With Glucose and Amino Acid Metabolism in Muscles and Hearts of Torpid Mice

    No full text
Mammals undergoing hibernation or torpor can reduce their metabolic rate. However, the mechanisms of hypometabolism in hibernating animals remain unclear. Analysis of hibernation mechanisms, taking into account commonalities and differences among organs, is essential for a comprehensive understanding of this reduction in physiological activity. Therefore, we investigated and compared changes in protein expression in the hearts and skeletal muscles of torpid mice using quantitative proteomics. Most of the 108 proteins commonly decreased in both tissues were related to translation, and the decrease in protein expression under torpid conditions was greater in muscle than in the heart. Furthermore, glycolysis related to proteins and pyruvate dehydrogenase expression was significantly decreased only in skeletal muscle. In contrast, only three proteins had significantly increased expression in the heart and muscles, with pyruvate dehydrogenase kinase 4 being the most increased. These results suggested that glucose consumption was reduced under torpid conditions. Our results suggest that the heart and muscles respond to low nutritional levels during torpor by reducing glucose and amino acid consumption to preserve energy. Moreover, this adaptation occurs more strongly in skeletal muscle than in the heart.Cell biochemistry and function, 43(4), art. no. e70076; 2025journal articl

EDTA chelates from lithium to uranium surveyed by deposited data of crystal structures

    Get PDF
A comprehensive survey of the metal chelates formed by ethylenediaminetetra-acetic acid (EDTA), widely used chelating agent typically known as six-coordination form with metal ions in biomedical science, was aimed to enhance our understanding of the diverse structures thereof, based on crystal structural data registered in the Cambridge crystal structure database (CCDC) until April 2025. As many as 709 data sets were classified, and it was resulted that some metal species are well investigated, otherwise, others are not. For instance, bismuth-EDTA, utilized in nuclear medicine for radioisotope chelation, occupies the second position. This is the first report that such a large number of dense datasets have been gathered ranging from lithium to uranium of EDTA chelates. This study would provide important insights into the diversity of EDTA complexes to facilitate future research and development in biomedical and pharmaceutical sciences.Version History Sep 30, 2025 Version 2 May 13, 2025 Version 1ChemRxiv, doi.org/10.26434/chemrxiv-2025-cfghz-v2articl
