The avifauna of Ramanathapuram, Tamil Nadu along the Southeast coast of India: waterbird assessments and conservation implications across key sanctuaries and Ramsar sites
Background: Wetlands, globally, face significant threats from human activities, and waterbirds, as key indicators of wetland health, are essential to maintaining ecological balance. Any long-term conservation measures should prioritize coordinated habitat preservation, wetland restoration, and sustainable management practices involving local communities. Monitoring and analyzing waterbird population trends are critical for understanding restoration, conservation, and management practices. Methods: The present study was carried out in five bird sanctuaries Chitrangudi, Kanjirankulam (Ramsar sites), Therthangal, Sakkarakottai, and Mel-Kel Selvanoor of Tamil Nadu, Southeast coast of India, over one year (April 2022 to March 2023). Monthly surveys using direct and block methods, with additional fortnightly visits during the breeding season, were conducted from vantage points to record species diversity, nesting activity, and conservation threats. Assessments of the residential status, national status (SOIB), and Convention for Migratory species (CMS) status were done along with the alpha and beta biodiversity profiles, principal component analysis, Pearson correlation and other statistical methods performed to assess breeding waterbirds community structure. Threats to the breeding waterbirds were categorised into high, medium, and low impacts based on degree of severity and irreversibility. Results: The avifaunal checklist revealed a diversity of waterbird species utilizing the sanctuaries for breeding. Notable findings include two Near-Threatened species like, Asian Woolly-necked Stork Ciconia episcopus, and Spot-billed Pelican Pelecanus philippensis, where Asian Woolly-necked Stork recorded only in Therthangal Bird Sanctuary. Avifauna of each sanctuary with breeding waterbirds in parenthesis is as follows: Chitragundi 122 (13); Mel-Kel Selvanoor 117 (19); Therthangal 96 (23); Sakkarakottai 116 (17) and Kanjirankulam 123 (14). The breeding activity (incubation in nests) was from November to February except for Glossy Ibis and Oriental Darter whose breeding started in December; Spot-billed Duck and Knob-billed Duck breed only during January and February. Among the 131 species recorded from all the sanctuaries, 78% were resident birds; 27% were breeding waterbirds, and 21% were Winter visitors. The SOIB and CMS statuses underscore the necessity of implementing effective conservation measures to protect breeding habitats amid anthropogenic pressures. Water unavailability and nest tree unavailability in the sanctuaries are found to be the high degree threats to breeding waterbirds than others. Virtual Touchpad for AR Glasses Based on Gesture Recognition
This paper proposes a control method called virtual touchpad for AR glasses which mirrors the screen of a PC. By using our method, a user can control the mouse cursor by gestures similar to the ones of a physical touchpad. Different from a physical touchpad, it is hard for users to recognize the hand’s position and operation status when using a virtual touchpad. To solve these problems, we introduce the flexible position mechanism and visual feedback. Socioeconomic effects of <em>Pestalotiopsis</em> rubber leaf fall disease on smallholders in South Sumatra, Indonesia
Since 2017, Pestalotiopsis leaf fall disease affecting para rubber trees has spread across Southeast Asia and South Asia. This novel disease represents a new risk to the livelihoods of rubber smallholders. The present study aims to investigate the impact of Pestalotiopsis leaf fall disease on the livelihoods of rubber smallholders in Indonesia. We adopt the sustainable livelihood framework for analyzing data. We first identified the context in which Indonesian rubber smallholders are situated drawing on secondary sources. Second, to understand smallholders’ livelihood situations, we conducted a household survey in Banyuasin and Muara Enim Regencies of South Sumatra Province. Vulnerability of Indonesian rubber smallholders has been increasing particularly since the 2010s, due to low rubber prices, diseases, and declining government support. Due to Pestalotiopsis leaf fall disease, latex production had decreased on average by 47.7% compared to normal conditions. Few measures had been attempted by smallholders against leaf fall disease. Whereas 60.2% of the households had income sources other than rubber, 38.8% were dependent on rubber income. Households with greater income, often owing to sources other than rubber, were more proactive in taking action to address a given situation. Our findings confirm that Pestalotiopsis leaf fall disease has significantly increased the vulnerability of rubber smallholders' livelihoods. Although rubber smallholders are not monolithic, overall, enduring the impact was the most common response among rubber smallholders. Households heavily reliant on rubber may face greater vulnerability if issues like leaf fall disease and low rubber prices persist. For future implementation of control and prevention measures currently under development, it is necessary to design methods that do not leave ordinary households behind. The Author describes the formation and collapse of Chinese housing bubble in recent China. According to his understanding, housing construction boom had appeared in early 1990s. The boom had reached bubble level in 2007-2009. Research on the Impact of ESG Information Disclosure on Labor Investment Efficiency
This paper examines the impact of ESG information disclosure on labor investment efficiency using Chinese A-share listed firms from 2017 to 2023. The findings reveal a non-linear inverted U-shaped relationship between ESG disclosure and labor investment efficiency. Further analysis indicates that financing constraints mediate this relationship. Additionally, the effects vary by ownership structure and industry, with nonstate-owned enterprises and firms in non-highly polluting industries experiencing a more pronounced impact. This study broadens the understanding of ESG transparency's influence on financing constraints and labor allocation. This paper is intended to illustrate how the governments have been tackling online harm in major Asia-Pacific jurisdictions. The concept of online harm is used to discuss “financial fraud perpetuated on the Internet, primarily targeting retail investors in the securities and derivatives markets,[…]to induce the purchase of financial products and / or services” (IOSCO Board (2023)). In Japan, Australia, Hong Kong and Singapore, the financial and securities regulators are heavily involved in the fight against such fraud. Association of Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme (ACE) Gene Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms (SNPs) With Hypertension in Older Japanese Adults: A Cross-Sectional Study Nested Within the Nagasaki Islands Study (NaIS)
Nagasaki University (長崎大学)博士(医学)Aim: We aimed to investigate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) gene and hypertension in elderly Japanese individuals. Methods: This cross-sectional validation study was nested within the Nagasaki Islands Study (NaIS), involving 1,766 community-dwelling participants aged 65 years and older. Height and weight were measured. Body mass index (BMI) was calculated from height and weight, and blood pressure was measured by trained staff. Antihypertensive medication use and lifestyle factors, including alcohol consumption, smoking habits, and exercise, were assessed by interviews. The SNP (rs4309) was genotyped using fluorescent hydrolysis probes from peripheral blood mononuclear cells. Hypertension was defined as using antihypertensive medication or a systolic blood pressure of ≥140 mmHg and/or a diastolic blood pressure of ≥90 mmHg in those not on medication. Logistic regression analysis was used to calculate adjusted odds ratios (ORs) for hypertension, adjusting for potential confounders. Results: Hypertension prevalence was higher in the CC/CT genotype group compared to the TT group (71.5% vs 66.4%, p=0.025). Logistic regression showed that the CC/CT genotype was independently associated with a higher likelihood of hypertension than the TT genotype (OR=1.25, 95% confidence interval (CI) 1.001-1.548) after adjusting for age, BMI, gender, alcohol consumption, smoking, and exercise. Conclusion: The CC and CT genotypes of the ACE gene were independently associated with hypertension, regardless of age, BMI, gender, and lifestyle factors. Ubiquitin, p62, and Microtubule-Associated Protein 1 Light Chain 3 in Cardiomyopathy
Nagasaki University (長崎大学)博士(医学)Background: The accumulation of ubiquitinated proteins has been detected in diseased hearts and has been associated with the expression of p62 and microtubule-associated protein 1 light chain 3 (LC3), which are related to autophagy. We evaluated differences in ubiquitin accumulation and p62 and LC3 expression in cardiomyopathy using endomyocardial biopsies. Methods and Results: We studied 24 patients (aged 24–70 years; mean age 55 years) diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM), hypertrophic cardiomyopathy (HCM), or non-cardiomyopathy (NCM) who underwent endomyocardial biopsy. Biopsied samples were evaluated by microscopy for ubiquitin accumulation and expression of p62 and LC3. Ubiquitin accumulation and p62 and LC3 expression were observed in all patients. Ubiquitin accumulation was higher in DCM than in HCM or NCM; p62 expression was higher in DCM than in HCM. There were no significant differences in LC3 expression among the groups. Ubiquitin accumulation was significantly related to serum N-terminal pro B-type natriuretic peptide concentration and the expression of p62, but not LC3.
