    Get PDF
This article will report on the author's development and implementation of a curriculum as part of the Cross-Culture elective course taught in Nagasaki University's Center for Language Studies in the spring of 2021. The module evolved to include the following goals: (1) encourage students to reflect on their preconceptions about their own and foreign cultures, and to test them with data obtained from the World Values Survey (WSV); (2) give students a theoretical framework for comparing cultures through Geert Hofstede's Cultural Dimensions and to connect the dimensions to their own personal values through a questionnaire.長崎大学言語教育研究センター論集, 13, pp41-50; 2025departmental bulletin pape

Demonstration of autonomous fixed‐wing drone delivery of prescribed medications in remote islands in Japan

    Get PDF
Background: In rural areas, physicians and dentists often dispense medications without pharmacists. Technology that can safely and promptly deliver medications is required so that pharmacists, even those at a distance, can dispense them in a timely manner. Methods: We demonstrated a combination of online medication counseling and drone delivery of medications dispensed by pharmacists in two rural clinics located far from pharmacies on remote islands in Japan. After being prescribed by physicians, dispensed by pharmacists, and online medication counseling, the medications were transported by autonomous fixed-wing drones, dropped, and picked up by the staff. Following Japanese regulations, our drones could only fly over the sea and drop medications on the shore. After the demonstration, we administered a questionnaire. Results: A total of 62 patients participated in the demonstration, which was successful except for two patients whose drone deliveries were canceled because of strong winds. Most patients received their medications after more than an hour. Individual home delivery costs were involved because the delivery spot was restricted to the shore. More than 80% of the patients were satisfied with online medication counseling, but a few expressed the desire to receive their medication at the clinic. Conclusions: Prescribed medication delivery using drones was technically feasible. This project will contribute to separating the prescribing and dispensing functions, promote pharmacist participation in rural areas, and expand patient treatment options. Methods for checking and monitoring the delivery spot, ensuring successful delivery, and covering the cost of drone delivery need further exploration.Journal of General and Family Medicine, 26(3), pp.195-204; 2025journal articl

Spheroid morphology of lung cancer cell lines correlates with oncological profiles

    Get PDF
We assessed the correlation between Multicellular tumor spheroids (MCTS) morphology and the oncological profile of lung cancer cells. MCTS were generated in five lung cancer cell lines and classified into Type–A MCTS, which showed strong aggregation, and Type–B MCTS, which showed weak aggregation. Drug resistance was higher in Type–A MCTS, and invasive ability was higher in Type–B MCTS. The oncologic profile of lung cancer cell lines correlated with MCTS morphology. MCTS morphology could thus be used in basic oncology research and as a clinical prognostic tool. Ionizing radiation induces mild and dose-independent damage to mitochondria in newt cells

In addition to remarkable regenerative abilities, newts demonstrate a heightened tolerance to radiation compared to mammals. Mitochondria play profound role in cell survival when cells undergo environmental stresses. Thus, our study sought to elucidate the impact of ionizing radiation (IR) on the mitochondria of a newt model Pleurodeles waltl. Primary cells derived from limb tissue of P. waltl were exposed to 0, 5, 10, or 15 Gy X-ray and analyzed at 24h post-irradiation (PIR). Analysis using MitoTracker Red labeling revealed a maximal (p < 0.001) in mitochondrial fission in cells exposed to 5 Gy IR, while mitochondrial fission in cells exposed to 10 and 15 Gy IR was comparable (p < 0.01). Mitochondrial superoxide levels increased in a reverse dose-dependent manner; notably, cells treated with 5 Gy IR produced significantly (p < 0.05) higher mitochondrial superoxide. Mitochondrial membrane potential (ΔΨm) decreased significantly (p < 0.01) with similar extent across all IR-treated groups. Though ΔΨm declined, the ATP content was not changed due to IR. Result from the MTT assay indicated no impairment in mitochondrial activity. Cell counting data suggest negligible impact of IR on viability of cells; however, the phase contrast imaging revealed senescent like morphology of cells. Taken together, cells of P. waltl show mild changes in morphology and function of the mitochondria in response to IR, but seem highly tolerant.Experimental Cell Research, 448(2), art. no. 114575; 2025journal articl

Variation in growth enhancement by elevated CO2 in Japanese mustard spinach (Brassica rapa var. perviridis)

The atmospheric CO2 is projected to increase in the future. The elevated CO2 generally enhances the growth and yield of crops through the acceleration of the net photosynthetic rate. It is well known that, for major crops such as rice and soybean, the elevated CO2‑induced enhancement varies with environmental conditions. However, there is limited information regarding the variation in the enhancement in leafy vegetables. To understand the growth response of leafy vegetables to elevated CO2, in the present study, Japanese mustard spinach (Brassica rapa var. perviridis), a year‑round leafy vegetable cultivated under various environmental conditions, was grown in pots inside open‑top chambers and exposed to ambient CO2 or elevated CO2 (ambient + 200 μmol mol‑1). The experiment was conducted eight times from September 2020 to November 2021. The extent of elevated CO2‑induced stimulation of relative growth rate (RGR) of whole‑plant (RGRW) differed among the experiments. The extents were less pronounced in the experiments with higher net assimilation rate (NAR) in the ambient CO2 treatment, which was due to higher photosynthetic photon flux density. This result suggests that the environmental conditions conducive to higher source strength suppressed the elevated CO2‑induced growth enhancement. In contrast, the ratio of RGR of root and stem to that of leaf (RGRR+S/RGRL), which could roughly reflect sink‑source balance, was significantly and positively correlated with the extent of elevated CO2‑induced stimulation in the RGRW. Although it is unclear which environmental factors were responsible for higher RGRR+S /RGRL, this result suggests that higher sink strength relative to source strength intensified the elevated CO2‑induced growth enhancement. Therefore, it was concluded that sink‑source relationship could be important determinant for the growth enhancement of Japanese mustard spinach by the elevated CO2.Journal of Agricultural Meteorology, 81(2), pp.66-72; 2025journal articl

Transplantation of chemically induced liver progenitors in Nagase analbuminemic rats under liver regenerative stimulus

We have explored chemically induced liver progenitors (CLiP) as a potential therapeutic agent for liver diseases because their proliferative capacity in vitro. Therefore, we hypothesized the potential treatment with CLiP transplantation (Tx) could be effective and be enhanced with liver regenerative stimulus for metabolic liver diseases. Methods: Male Sprague Dawley rats were used for mature hepatocytes (HEP) isolation to induce CLiP using 3 small molecules cocktail (ROCK-inhibitor, TGF beta-1 inhibitor, GSK3 inhibitor). Harvested rat CLiP (1 × 106) were transplanted to the posterior lobe of the liver (30 % of whole liver) of Nagase analbuminemic rats (NAR) through portal vein injection. One week later, portal venous branch to non-transplanted lobe was ligated to induce liver regeneration in CLiP bearing liver lobe (portal branch ligation: PBL). Only CLiP Tx or HEP Tx of same dose were used as control groups. Serial measurement of serum albumin level was measured by ELISA method. All NARs were subject to immunosuppression therapy using tacrolimus s.q. 3 days per week. Results: After HEP Tx especially with PBL, serum albumin level was significantly elevated. However, even with PBL, CLiP Tx group did not show significant increase in serum albumin. CLiP were surrounded by tumor necrosis factor-related apoptosis-inducing ligand (TRAIL) positive cells in portal veins suggesting that CLiP were exposed to the risk of innate immunity. Conclusion: Although CLiP respond to growth factors and proliferate better than HEP in vitro, their behavior in vivo in response to liver regenerative stimulus were not similar to in vitro probably because of less immaturity of receptors and/or high immunogenicity as compared to HEP.Regenerative Therapy, 30, pp.1-8; 2025journal articl
