The Economics of Kindness: A Philosophical Perspective on Sharing

    No full text
The Economics of Kindness: A Philosophical Perspective on Sharing offers a deep exploration into the intersection of economics and human kindness. Through a philosophical lens, Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA, examines how the act of sharing can not only uplift individuals but also contribute to a more sustainable and compassionate global economy. The book challenges the traditional economic models that prioritize profit over people, instead proposing that kindness, empathy, and mutual support should form the foundation of economic systems. Published by The United Nations and The Education Training Centre in 2008, this work suggests that true prosperity arises when individuals and communities embrace the values of generosity and collective well-being, and when economic policies are shaped by these principles. The author calls for a shift in economic thinking to focus on the moral dimensions of economic practices, seeking to inspire a more humane approach to wealth, resources, and human relations. The writing of The Economics of Kindness: A Philosophical Perspective on Sharing was motivated by Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA's desire to understand how the principles of kindness and sharing can transform the way we approach economic systems. In 2008, amid a global economy increasingly driven by profit maximization and individualism, the author saw the need for a paradigm shift that embraces social responsibility and collective well-being. By focusing on kindness as a central economic driver, the book aims to challenge traditional economic practices and explore how they can be aligned with deeper human values. The author’s concern with the rising tide of inequality and the environmental degradation exacerbated by selfish economic behavior laid the foundation for this work. In this book, kindness is presented not just as a moral virtue but as a foundational economic principle that can lead to long-term prosperity. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA, redefines traditional economic concepts by introducing “the economics of kindness,” which emphasizes sharing, generosity, and mutual aid as critical components of economic theory and practice. The book proposes a model of economic exchange based on human values rather than just financial gain, encouraging systems that foster cooperation and empathy over competition and exploitation. The inspiration for this book stems from the growing realization of the ethical limitations of profit-driven economic systems. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA, observed a world where economic policies were increasingly shaped by the interests of the few, leaving the majority marginalized. This observation prompted a reevaluation of the role that kindness, empathy, and cooperation could play in reshaping global economic systems. The author witnessed firsthand the power of kindness in social movements, grassroots organizations, and community-based economies, where acts of sharing fostered resilience and solidarity in the face of economic hardship. The primary principle underpinning this book is that an economy founded on kindness, empathy, and shared prosperity will be more sustainable and ethical than one rooted in individualism and exploitation. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA, stresses that economic systems should be designed to meet the needs of all people, not just the wealthy or powerful. The book proposes that kindness and sharing are not only morally valuable but are also key to creating stable, thriving economies that benefit everyone, fostering relationships of trust and cooperation in the process. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA, identifies several indicators that guide the understanding of the economics of kindness. These include social indicators such as community well-being, equity, and access to basic needs, as well as environmental indicators, which assess the sustainability of economic practices. The book also explores the psychological and emotional dimensions of economic exchanges, considering how acts of kindness can improve collective happiness and social cohesion. In this book, the operational variables include the roles of cooperation, solidarity, and social trust in economic systems. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA, evaluates how these variables can be fostered in both individual behavior and collective economic policies. The author also examines the impact of policies that incentivize kindness and the sharing of resources, analyzing their long-term effects on economic stability and social justice. The primary determinants in the writing of this book are the need to reconcile economic progress with human well-being and environmental sustainability. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA, was deeply influenced by the growing global awareness of social and environmental inequalities and the need for economic systems that put people and the planet first. The book is also shaped by the philosophy of kindness as a guiding principle in both personal and collective actions, encouraging readers to reflect on the broader ethical implications of economic decisions. The book offers strategies for incorporating kindness into economic practices, ranging from corporate social responsibility and ethical consumerism to community-driven economic models. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA, outlines how governments, businesses, and individuals can adopt policies that promote the sharing of resources and wealth. These strategies are designed to encourage the redistribution of wealth, promote environmental sustainability, and create a culture of empathy and mutual support within economies. The challenges highlighted in this book include the entrenched interests of profit-driven entities, the political power of corporations, and the ideological resistance to models that prioritize sharing over competition. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA, acknowledges that shifting economic systems toward kindness will require overcoming these powerful obstacles, but he also argues that such a shift is not only possible but necessary for the future well-being of society and the planet. In conclusion, The Economics of Kindness: A Philosophical Perspective on Sharing offers a compelling vision for an alternative economic model based on generosity, mutual aid, and shared prosperity. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA, urges readers to rethink the true purpose of economics—not as a tool for individual gain but as a means for fostering global cooperation, social equity, and environmental sustainability. The book provides both a philosophical critique of current systems and a practical roadmap for embracing kindness as the cornerstone of economic theory and practice

Virtuous Statesmanship: A Philosophical Approach to Good Governance

Governance, at its core, is a moral endeavor. True leadership extends beyond the realm of policy implementation and political maneuvering; it is an ethical commitment to the well-being of a society. "Virtuous Statesmanship: A Philosophical Approach to Good Governance" explores the moral dimensions of leadership, dissecting the philosophical foundations that underpin ethical decision-making in governance. Written by Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA, and published in New York, USA, in 2008, this work presents an interdisciplinary analysis that draws upon philosophy, political science, and ethics to construct a framework for principled leadership. Through a critical examination of historical models and contemporary governance challenges, this book offers a roadmap for policymakers seeking to integrate virtue with statecraft. The increasing complexity of global politics has led to a governance landscape where pragmatism often overshadows principle. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA authored this book to address the urgent need for ethically grounded leadership in public affairs. Published in New York, USA, in 2008, this book was conceived during an era marked by political turbulence, ethical crises, and the rapid transformation of democratic ideals. By analyzing the philosophical foundations of governance, the book aims to guide future leaders toward a model of statesmanship that prioritizes integrity, justice, and the common good. Ethical governance is rooted in classical and modern philosophical traditions that emphasize the moral obligations of leadership. Drawing upon Aristotle’s virtue ethics, Kantian moral philosophy, and Rawlsian justice, Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA examines how ethical frameworks shape governance. The book delves into the essential characteristics of virtuous statesmanship, such as wisdom, temperance, justice, and courage, establishing them as pillars of ethical leadership. Throughout history, societies have witnessed a recurring pattern of political corruption, short-termism, and the erosion of civic trust. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA explores this phenomenon by contrasting governance failures with exemplars of virtuous leadership. Case studies from various historical epochs illustrate how moral principles—or the lack thereof—have determined the fate of nations and institutions. A framework of ethical governance requires adherence to key principles: transparency, accountability, the pursuit of justice, and an unwavering commitment to the public good. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA establishes a philosophical methodology that integrates ethical reasoning into decision-making processes, ensuring that leaders remain guided by moral imperatives rather than transient political gains. Successful governance is measured not only by economic prosperity or policy efficiency but also by ethical legitimacy. Indicators include public trust in institutions, the consistency of policy with moral values, and the ability of leadership to maintain fairness in lawmaking and enforcement. To transform philosophical ideals into actionable governance strategies, Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA outlines operational variables that influence ethical decision-making. These include political culture, institutional structures, leadership education, and mechanisms of accountability. A variety of factors shape the ethical landscape of governance, including historical precedents, societal values, political institutions, and the personal character of leaders. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA explores how these elements interact to either strengthen or undermine virtuous leadership. The practical application of ethical governance requires systematic approaches such as leadership training programs, institutional reforms, and legal safeguards. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA provides strategies for integrating philosophical principles into public administration, ensuring that ethical considerations remain central to policy formation and execution. Despite the moral clarity of virtuous leadership, real-world governance faces resistance from vested interests, bureaucratic inertia, and ideological conflicts. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA highlights the obstacles that ethical leaders must navigate and the support systems—such as civic engagement, checks and balances, and educational initiatives—that can bolster ethical governance. At a time when global leadership is increasingly scrutinized for its ethical shortcomings, "Virtuous Statesmanship: A Philosophical Approach to Good Governance" stands as a critical guide for policymakers, scholars, and engaged citizens. Prof. Dr. Yoesoep Edhie Rachmad, Ph.D., DBA underscores that ethical governance is not an abstract ideal but a tangible practice that requires dedication, philosophical inquiry, and institutional commitment. By advocating for a return to virtuous statesmanship, this book serves as a manifesto for leaders who aspire to govern with wisdom, justice, and moral integrity

Improvement in simultaneous processing through metacognitive instruction.

    No full text
This study presents the improvement generated in simultaneous processing by the application of metacognitive instruction to 3rd grade primary education students. A pre-post-follow-up test design was used. The sample consisted of 30 students from one classroom. Two groups were formed; an intervention group comprising students in the classroom who presented difficulties in simultaneous processing, showing a cognitive weakness that compromises reading comprehension, and a comparison group comprising the rest of the students in the class. The instruments used were the Das-Naglieri Cognitive Assessment System (DN CAS), Assessment of Reading Comprehension (ACL) test and the Reading Awareness Scale (ESCOLA). The groups were equivalent in socioeconomic and cultural status and in successive processing. Reading and study variables were used as differentiators: simultaneous processing and reading awareness. A metacognitive training program based on the Planning Facilitation method was applied to the intervention group. The comparison group followed the usual curricular activities of the classroom and for the education level, according to the traditional teaching model. The program was implemented in 48 sessions over 12 weeks. After the intervention, the group with weakness improved significantly in simultaneous processing and reading awareness; the comparison group did not show any change in their initial scores. The metacognitive instruction that facilitates discussion between students and reflective verbalization about reading tasks promotes improvement in reading awareness and in the simultaneous processing necessary for reading comprehension

Mapping the Stages of Telepsychology Interventions for Bereaved Informal Caregivers Following Death in an Oncological Intensive Care Unit: A Scoping Review to Inform the Development of a Protocol Model

    No full text
Death in an oncological intensive care unit represents a highly complex clinical and emotional event, frequently associated with substantial psychological distress among bereaved informal caregivers, who often remain unsupported after loss, particularly in territorially unequal settings. In this context, telepsychology has emerged as a promising strategy to expand access to mental health care, yet it still lacks structured, evidence-based protocols. This scoping review aimed to map the stages of telepsychological care for bereaved informal caregivers following ICU death, in order to inform the development of a protocol model. Searches were conducted across five international databases in accordance with PRISMA-ScR guidelines, with record management via Rayyan. Of 1,594 identified studies, 33 met eligibility criteria. Thematic synthesis organized care into a progressive pathway comprising initial contact, psychological screening, remote intervention, longitudinal monitoring, and closure, with referral to in-person services when indicated. Combined synchronous and asynchronous interventions predominated, supported by validated instruments assessing prolonged grief, anxiety, depression, and post-traumatic stress, alongside approaches focused on emotional support, psychoeducation, and coping enhancement. Considerable methodological heterogeneity was observed regarding timing, formats, and risk criteria, highlighting the need for a flexible and context-sensitive model. The resulting operational framework consolidates dispersed evidence into a replicable structure aligned with digital health and public healthcare systems. The proposed model provides a pragmatic foundation for progressive telepsychology implementation in oncological settings, with potential to reduce care discontinuity, alleviate psychological suffering, and strengthen post-bereavement support for informal caregivers
