Have We Solved the Replicability Crisis? From Open Practices to Systemic Reform in Cognitive Neurosciences
More than a decade after the recognition of the replication crisis, the field of cognitive neuroscience has acknowledged the importance of implementing potential solutions. Practices such as preregistration, open data sharing, and standardized analysis pipelines are now being adopted and promoted. Yet, structural, methodological, and cultural challenges continue to limit the field’s capacity for cumulative, robust and replicable science. Based on a focused expert panel held by the Interest Group on Open and Reproducible Science (IGOR), this position paper argues that cognitive neuroscience, as a field situated at the intersection of cognitive psychology, systems neuroscience, psychometrics, and experimental methodology, is uniquely positioned to drive the adoption of robust research practices. For a realistic reform, we must rethink incentives, establish better measurement properties, including robustness, reliability, and validity, as well as secure the sustainability of our analytical and measurement infrastructure
The Alienation Risk and Restoration of Teacher Subjectivity in the Age of Artificial Intelligence
With the rapid development and widespread application of artificial intelligence (AI) technology, teachers—as the central agents in the educational process—are facing unprecedented challenges. As AI becomes integrated into the educational system, the functions and roles of teachers have undergone significant changes and have been profoundly affected and disrupted, leading to the problem of teacher subjectivity alienation. Through a systematic review and meta-synthesis analysis, this study outlines current research trends on teacher subjectivity alienation, gathers insights from frontline teachers and education experts, and proposes pathways for restoring teacher subjectivity. These include strategies for capacity building, role transformation, institutional safeguards, and models of human–machine collaboration—aimed at continuously enhancing teachers’ digital literacy, optimizing evaluation systems, and strengthening professional development pathways—to provide valuable references for educational practice
Translations
This component provides translations of the Organizational Exploitation Scale and the Dutch Workaholism Scale (DUWAS-10; Schaufeli et al., 2009) in eleven languages: Dutch, German, Hindi, Hungarian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Persian, Portuguese, Swedish, and Traditional Chinese. For languages where validated versions did not previously exist, scales were translated using a three-step back-translation procedure (Hambleton et al., 2004)
Wastewater Catchment Areas in Great Britain
Wastewater catchment area data are essential for wastewater treatment capacity planning and have recently become critical for operationalising wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) for COVID-19. Owing to the privatised nature of the water industry in the United Kingdom, the required catchment area datasets are not readily available to researchers. Here, we present a consolidated dataset of 8,185 catchment areas from eleven sewerage service providers in Great Britain, covering 99% of the population of England and Wales. We develop a geospatial method for estimating the population resident within each catchment from small area population estimates generated by the Office for National Statistics. The method is more widely applicable to matching electronic health records to wastewater infrastructure. Population estimates are highly predictive of population equivalent treatment loads reported under the European Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive. We highlight challenges associated with using geospatial data for wastewater-based epidemiology
