Negative body image, understood as dissatisfaction with one’s physical appearance, has been consistently linked to poorer mental health outcomes, including depressive and anxiety symptoms as well as suicidal ideation. Given that humans are inherently social beings, individual well-being is strongly shaped by the quality of interpersonal relationships. A crucial factor influencing these relationships is interpersonal trust. While some individuals readily trust others, others exhibit a pervasive lack of trust, which may manifest as paranoia. Paranoia is characterized by beliefs that other people are a primary source of threat or harm and exists on a continuum ranging from mild, non-clinical paranoia-like thoughts (e.g., ideas of reference or suspicions of being judged or criticized) to severe persecutory delusions observed in psychotic disorders. Importantly, paranoia-like thoughts are relatively common in the general population and can cause substantial distress even outside clinical contexts.
Emerging evidence suggests a significant association between negative body image and paranoia-like thoughts. The theoretical model proposes that body image may function as an interpersonal vulnerability factor: individuals who perceive their bodies negatively may feel more exposed to social scrutiny and evaluation. In turn, heightened sensitivity to being observed or judged by others may increase mistrust and foster paranoid interpretations of social situations. Despite these theoretical links, the mechanisms underlying the relationship between body image and paranoia remain poorly understood. In particular, there is a lack of systematic, prospective, and interventional studies that would allow causal inferences. Moreover, no previous research has examined how fluctuations in body image relate to paranoia-like thoughts as they unfold in everyday life using ecologically valid methods such as Ecological Momentary Assessment (EMA).
The primary aim of the present project is to investigate the causal relationship between body image and paranoia-like thoughts in a non-clinical population. To address the identified gaps in the literature, this project employs a novel mixed longitudinal and experimental design that combines EMA with Ecological Momentary Interventions (EMI). In the first phase, the study will examine whether natural, moment-to-moment fluctuations in perceived body image prospectively predict changes in paranoia-like thoughts over a one-week observation period. This phase will also explore potential contributing and confounding factors, including sleep quality, interoceptive awareness, negative affect, and self-esteem. In the second phase, the project will experimentally test the directionality of this relationship by implementing a CBT-based psychological intervention aimed at improving perceived body image in participants’ natural environments. Using ecologically valid, momentary tasks designed to enhance body image, the study will assess whether experimentally induced improvements in body image lead to subsequent reductions in paranoia-like thoughts. We hypothesize that positive manipulation of body image will result in measurable decreases in paranoia-like ideation.
The expected outcomes of this project include a clearer understanding of the temporal and causal links between body image and paranoia-like thoughts, as well as empirical evidence supporting body image as a modifiable risk factor for paranoid thinking. By integrating real-time assessment with real-time intervention, this project will provide valuable insights into everyday psychological processes and contribute to the development of innovative, scalable preventive interventions

Social Inhibition of Return (sIOR) Under Partial Occlusion: A Preregistered Replication
This project preregisters a close replication of the social inhibition of return (sIOR) effect reported by Skarratt et al. (2010), in which participants’ responses are slower when their target appears at the same location as a partner’s immediately preceding target, compared to a different location. In addition to replicating the core sIOR effect, the project tests whether the amount of partner visibility, and therefore the amount of available social information during joint action, modulates the magnitude of sIOR.
To test this, participants will complete a joint target-localisation task with a real partner while the partner is visible at five graded levels (0%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100% visibility), administered in randomized blocked order from no visibility to full visibility. The primary expected outcome is an sIOR effect (slower RTs for Same vs Different trials), and a systematic change in the size of this effect as visibility increases, consistent with the idea that richer social information from the partner strengthens (or is required for) the inhibitory tagging observed in sIOR.
Since there exists prior data on the sIOR effect, Bayesian analysis will be utilized as it supports evidence updating across studies. The results of the original study will be used as informative priors that will inform us of the expected effects in the replication. This approach provides a principles framework for accumulating evidence rather than relying on a single dichotomous decision based on a p-value derived from an independent experiment.
Finally, this experiment is intended as the first of the initial phase of a longer-term project investigating whether sIOR generalizes from human-human joint action to human-robot interaction, where the availability and interpretation of social cues (e.g., agency, biological motion, gaze/hand information) can differ markedly from a human partner. Establishing (i) whether sIOR replicates in the current paradigm and (ii) how strongly it depends on partner visibility provides foundational evidence for designing subsequent human-robot studies that systematically manipulate the amount and type of social information conveyed by an artificial partner
Investigating Hybrid Search with Eye-Tracking: A Replication of Drew, Boettcher, and Wolfe (2017)

This study investigates how three factors affect performance of visual search: (1) memory set size: the number of targets the participant must memorize and then search for; (2) visual set size: the number of distractors (not memorized) and targets on the screen; and (3) target presence. By measuring response times and eye-movement patterns, the study tests the hypothesis that observers make a single search through the visual image in a hybrid search. A hybrid search occurs when an observer is searching for one of a number of possible targets that they hold in memory.
We plan to run the same analyses as Drew et al. regarding behavioral results, eye-tracking results, and FVF analysis
Evaluation of Moral Motivation Inference in Real-World Moral Narratives by Humans and Frontier Language Models
We will evaluate how moral motivations are inferred from natural-language descriptions of real-world moral narratives across two populations: human participants and frontier language models (LMs). Using a shared set of 344 moral narratives, both populations will annotate each narrative for the presence/absence and perceived strength of four primary moral motivations defined by the Motivation of Moral Action (MoMA) framework: Approach Good, Avoid Bad, Approach Bad, and Avoid Good. Subjects will only infer the presence of motivation based on the explicit presence of wording, not speculate about motivations not tied to actual text (i.e., this is how I would expect myself or others to feel in this situation, even if they didn’t say it). In addition, annotators will (a) identify the sentence(s) within each narrative that justify their motivational inferences, (b) classify the intended outcome of the agent’s action as morally good or bad, and (c) answer additional judgment questions.
The primary goal of this study is to test whether the MoMA framework captures systematic patterns in how moral motivations are inferred from natural language and whether these patterns appear within each population independently. All hypotheses, measures, and analyses are identical for human and LM data and will be conducted separately for each population. No direct statistical comparisons between humans and LMs are planned for this preregistered study.
For the LM condition, we will use a suite of frontier language models selected based on publicly available performance benchmarks (e.g., LM Arena rankings at the time of data collection), the country of origin, and the historical track record of the lab that produced the model. We use the term “language model (LM)” rather than “large language model (LLM)” to acknowledge potential architectural differences across systems and to avoid assuming model design homogeneity. LMs will be prompted to perform the same annotation tasks as human participants, producing structured outputs for motivation presence, motivation strength, justification sentences, and outcome classification.
For the human condition, participants will be recruited online (e.g., via Prolific, Besample, etc.) and will complete the same annotation tasks using identical materials and response formats. Each participant will rate a subset of narratives (10), with the assignment structured to ensure adequate independent coverage of each narrative across raters.
By applying the same theoretical framework and analytic pipeline to humans and LMs separately, this study provides a principled test of the MoMA model’s generality as a description of moral motivation inference from natural language
