Trusting the vigilant: How children value others’ vigilance against deception
Humans rely extensively on communicated information, yet communication exposes receivers to the risk of misinformation. To manage this risk, individuals must not only be vigilant against dishonest informants but also monitor others’ vigilance towards deception, especially when information is transmitted across social chains. The present study investigates children’s vigilance towards dishonesty (‘first-order vigilance’), as well as their ability to monitor others’ vigilance and to make trust decisions accordingly (‘second-order vigilance’). Children aged four to seven years completed three tasks assessing first-order vigilance towards dishonest informants and three tasks using a novel second-order vigilance paradigm, measuring their tendency to trust informants who had previously shown vigilance or gullibility towards deception. Our findings show that children’s first-order vigilance towards dishonesty improves between the ages of four and seven, and is modulated by how deceptive informants are characterised. Children are less likely to trust informants described as lying or having antisocial intentions (epistemic and intentional dimensions of deception) than those described simply as mean (moral dimension of deception). Furthermore, from the age of four to five, children are more likely to trust an informant who has previously demonstrated vigilance towards dishonesty than one who has shown gullibility, based on observational evidence of their past trust towards a dishonest source. These findings shed light on children’s emerging sensitivity to the social history of communicated information and point to the role of second-order vigilance mechanisms in mitigating the risk of misinformation through transmission
The JUDGE Model of AI-Mediated Teacher Agency: A Theoretical Framework for English Language Teaching
Although generative artificial intelligence (AI) has rapidly penetrated English language teaching (ELT), the existing research literature has remained largely limited to technocentric views of usability and has ignored a critical theoretical gap in the reconfiguration of teacher agency and professional authority. Aiming to address this gap, this article introduces the JUDGE model, first conceptualized by Hosseini (2026), as a leading framework for analyzing teacher agency in AI-mediated ecosystems. Drawing on sociocultural theory and ecological perspectives, Hosseini’s JUDGE model identifies five critical dimensions of professional action: Justification, Uncertainty Management, Decision Ownership, Guidance vs. Governance, and Ethical Accountability. This paper moves beyond abstract theorizing to explicitly operationalize this framework by introducing the JUDGE Scale (or J-Scale). Preliminary validation of the J-Scale by experts confirms its high content validity and transforms the dimensions of the JUDGE model into measurable constructs for empirical inquiry. By simultaneously providing a conceptual architecture and a valid psychometric trajectory, this study provides a solid and practical foundation for researchers and teacher educators to navigate the redistribution of agency in the age of artificial intelligence.

Europe Adrift
Europe is adrift in the face of great turmoil and transformation. The liberal international order that emerged after the Cold War has disintegrated and the EU lacks a coherent strategic vision for responding to – let alone shaping – the emergent world order. There has been a shift away from market liberalism and toward state interventionism, strategic autonomy and a more assertive EU internationally. Yet these efforts are haunted by legacies from the neoliberal era that continue to limit its capacity for effective action. Herein lies the challenge. Europe struggles to overcome internal challenges, namely internal rivalry and a seeming inability to implement much-needed reforms, while it simultaneously faces a security threat from Russia, erratic mercantilism from the US, a competitiveness challenge vis-à-vis China, and declining goodwill in the Global South, all in the context of ecological collapse. This special issue takes the dynamics of intensifying global inter-state competition as an entry point to survey the erosion of European security, growth and normative power whose foundations were laid in the neoliberal era, the contradictions contestations and constraints revealed in the responses from European actors in the face of this erosion, and how European power and prosperity is being reshaped in unexpected ways
