Introduction to plans and section drawings, HbRf-39

Most plans of excavations were made on level record forms or on floor plan forms during the 
1983, 1990 and 1991 seasons. These records can be accessed in a separate folder – 
HbRf39200ExcavationRecords. Towards the end of the 1991 season a few large-scale plans 
were made on graph paper because the number of items was too large to fit on the standard 
forms. In 1991 a small number of plans were made of concentrations of animal bones. These 
plans are stored with the faunal materials.  
Maps of the site beyond the excavation area were made in 1983 and 1991. For the 1983 season 
there are both field drawings and finished maps in the digital archive. For the 1990 season 
there are primarily digitized maps created by Martin Handly on a personal computer from data 
collected by him in the field. In 2022 J. Driver employed a student (Georgina Covey) to create 
schematic plans showing the location of bedrock and the north side of the parapet, that formed 
the north and south sides of the gully in which most excavations took place. 
In 1983 Knut Fladmark ensured that there were sections drawn through the sediments, 
showing both north-south and east-west projections. In 1990/1991 seasons the north-south 
section was drawn along the western side of the main excavation area, complementing 
Fladmark’s 1983 section. 
In 2022 J. Driver employed Georgina Covey to draw schematic sections of every layer and level 
in almost all excavation units. These schematic diagrams are based on data from layer and level 
record forms, and show the north, east, south and west profiles of each excavation unit.  
Maps and stratigraphic sections can also be found in publications, theses and unpublished 
reports within this archive.
