How to cite and reproduce the HbRf-39 archival materials

Excavations and analysis of HbRf-39 were funded directly and indirectly with public money. We received 
grants primarily from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council, funded by the government 
of Canada. Students were supported from those grants and also with scholarships and employment 
opportunities from Simon Fraser University, funded primarily through tuition fees and grants from the 
government of British Columbia. Because taxpayers and students funded the research, it is appropriate 
that information about HbRf-39 should be made available to anyone who is interested.  
Except where noted in the metadata file, no permission is required to cite or reproduce items in the 
digital archive. 
However, it is also important to acknowledge the people who did the work that created this knowledge, 
and this document provides guidelines on how to do this. 
Citations 
Citations are normally required when writing in an academic format. However, I encourage anyone 
using these resources to acknowledge the individuals whose work contributed to this archive. The 
following guidelines should be followed when you wish to provide a formal academic citation to the 
work in the digital archive. 
1. Whenever possible, cite the author of any publications, theses or unpublished reports. Check the 
metadata file on the digital archive for guidance, as well as any restrictions on citations.  
2. Some field records have clear authorship – such as the field notes made by individual crew members 
during the 1983 field season. These should be cited as unpublished field records, but the authorship 
should also be given. Example: Knut Fladmark, 1983, HbRf-39 field notes. Unpublished document 
HbRf39282, accessed from [URL] on [DATE] 
3. The same applies to any photographic images where a creator is identified. For example, most of the 
colour slides taken in the 1990’s were taken by J. Driver, but the collection includes the work of other

photograph HbRf39403110, accessed from [URL] on [DATE] 
4. Databases, such as the master faunal catalogue or the lithics catalogue have authors, and those 
authors should be given credit. Check the metadata file for details of authorship. 
5. If no author is provided in the metadata table, documents can be cited as anonymous. Example: 
Anonymous, n.d., drawing of HbRf-39 artifact number 79. Unpublished drawing HbRf39605, accessed 
from [URL] on {DATE]. 
Reproduction

The following guidelines should be followed when you wish to reproduce an image from the digital 
archive. The term “image” not only refers to photographs and drawings, but also to reproduction of part 
of a scanned file, such as a level record.  
1. Check the metadata file to see if there are any restrictions on reproduction 
2. Follow the guidelines above when providing a source for the image that you are reproducing.

This short film in collaboration with the Surrey Urban Indigenous Leadership Committee, Skookum Surrey and the SFU Centre for the Study of Educational Leadership and Policy. “For the next seven generations: An exploration of Urban Indigenous Women’s Leadership Framework through the experiences of Indigenous women engaged in a community-based leadership program follows the principles of O.C.A.P. (ownership, control, access, and possession). Under these principles, each individual participating, Skookum Surrey, and SFU’s Centre for the Study of Educational Leadership and Policy join to own and control the work. Ongoing consent is required, meaning that if Skookum Lab and its partners in the project wish to use the materials produced above and beyond what is agreed to in the project consent form, participants will be consulted and asked if they are willing to provide additional consent
