In 1983, 1990 and 1991 colour slides (35mm) were taken primarily by Fladmark and Driver to 
record general views of the excavations, as well as specific features, layers, in situ finds and 
other items of interest. The slides also included personal details of field seasons, including 
views of the field camps, crew members and family members, field trips etc. 
It is worth bearing in mind a number of issues relevant to using 35mm film for field 
photography: 
1. there were no commercially available digital cameras at this time. Colour slides had to be 
mailed away, so the results of photography were usually only available after the field season 
ended. 
2. film was relatively expensive, so we did not take thousands of images and then select the 
best ones 
3. although cameras could be set to take automatic exposures, this was less useful in the highly 
variable light and shade of a deep excavation; we therefore took multiple images with different 
settings when lighting was a problem 
In the online archive I have included only colour slides that are relevant to the excavations at 
HbRf-39. When multiple images were available I selected those that best showed the 
information that we were trying to capture.
