Must the Chinese Go?: Iowa Republicans and the Chinese Exclusion Acts, 1882-1905
ANTHONY MILLER studies the interplay of race, foreign relations, class, religion, and the development of the Midwest at the heart of the “Chinese Question.” Specifically, he argues that Iowa Republicans, such as John Kasson and Edwin Conger, played critical roles in developing a uniquely midwestern compromise on the question of Chinese exclusion in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries
