    Posttraumatic Growth and Primal World Beliefs among People Who Have Caused Accidental Death or Serious Injury

    Background. Posttraumatic growth (PTG)—positive changes that people may experience in the aftermath of highly distressing experiences—has been observed in survivors of a variety of events but has not been previously studied among people who have caused accidental death or injury (PCADIs). In addition, questions remain about the role, in PTG, of changes in the assumptive world and the relationships between PTG and distress, personality, and social support. Methods. Participants (N = 528), included PCADIs (n = 44) and a non-trauma comparison group (n = 484), who completed the Primals Inventory and measures of personality, anxiety, and depression. PCADIs (n = 43) also completed measures of PTG, PTG behavioral changes, social support and life satisfaction. Results. Modest levels of PTG commensurate with survivors of other relevant forms of distress were observed. Results demonstrated significant differences between primal world beliefs Good, Safe, Enticing, Just, Regenerative, Funny, and Improvable in PCADIs and non-trauma survivors as well as significant positive relationships between PTG and the primals Good, Safe, Alive, Just, Regenerative, Funny, and Improvable and between PTG and reported behavior changes related to PTG, but no significant relationships were found between PTG and distress, PTG and social support, or PTG and personality traits Extraversion, Openness to Experience, Conscientiousness, or Agreeableness (though a significant negative relationship was observed between PTG and Neuroticism). Conclusions. PCADIs may experience PTG that both influences and is influenced by primal world beliefs, but the hypothesized relationships between PTG and distress, personality, and social support were not observed. Additional studies with larger PCADI populations may find these relationships exist at a statistically significant level. And future research should aim to develop interventions addressing the distress and growth potential of this population

    Manuscript copy of the Calendarium and Ephemerides as published by Regiomontanus in 1474. The Calendarium, for 1475-1530, gives information on lunar and solar eclipses, the length of days, and the signs of the zodiac and planets. Also includes a table of time corrections (f. 11v) for cities in reference to a longitude of approximately 10 degrees east (thus making no correction for Braunschweig, Nuremberg, Ulm, or Milan). The Ephemerides, consisting only of tables updated to begin in 1480 and ending in 1506, provides positions for the sun, moon, and planets for each day of each year. The beginning of each year is marked with a finding tab of leather or parchment dyed pink. A liturgical calendar at the beginning of the manuscript (lacking November) includes additions to the printed version which customize the calendar for a Benedictine monastery (Saint Maurus, 15 Jan.; commemoration of Adalbero, 6 Oct.) in southern Germany or Austria (Valentinus, bishop of Passau, 7 Jan.; Rupert, bishop of Salzburg, 27 Mar.; Ulrich of Augsburg, 4 July; Koloman, patron saint of Austria, 13 Oct.), and more specifically the Benedictine abbey in Lambach, Austria (feast and translation of Kilian, patron saint of the abbey, 7 and 14 Jul.).https://repository.upenn.edu/sims_models/1055/thumbnail.jp

    Each paper can be read independently, but the general problem that’s at the focus of this dissertation is the following. On the one hand, morality and justice appear to impose the same requirements on all. According to some of the most influential moral and political theories, what we owe to each other should be informed by ‘impartial’ requirements of fairness or respect for persons—requirements that apply regardless of whether the people you interact with happen to be relatives, friends, or members of the same society. Yet many would balk at the notion that we cannot permissibly favor some—they would charge that these sorts of views of morality or justice don’t do justice to the importance of ‘special’ relationships. This dissertation focuses on how we should think about resolving this tension between requirements, especially when it comes to national or democratic ties in emergency contexts. The first paper offers a critical analysis of the special relationship that nationalists claim we hold to co-nationals. The second paper assesses the limits of this relationship under the emergency conditions provided by the pandemic. The third investigates our special relationship to democratic society and the limits of action under the climate emergency. In ‘Against Cultural Identity as Grounds for the Intrinsic Value of Self-Determination’ I argue against the liberal nationalist claim that national self-determination is intrinsically valuable because it’s grounded in national cultural identity. In ‘Vaccine Nationalism and Basic Rights’ I argue that the case against COVID-19 vaccine nationalism is robustly overdetermined because it violates duties we have to uphold a basic subsistence right to health. In ‘Eco-Sabotage as Defensive Activism’ I argue that we can do justice to our commitments to democratic society and yet still engage in illegal and coercive property destruction with environmental aims

    Big Data for Microorganisms: Computational Approaches Leveraging Large-Scale Microbial Transcriptomic Compendia

    Genome-wide transcriptomics data captures the molecular state of microorganisms – the expression patterns of genes in response to some condition or stimuli. With advancements in high-throughput sequencing technologies, there are thousands of microbial transcription profiles publicly available. Consequently, this data has been collected and integrated to form transcriptomic compendia, which are collections of diverse gene expression experiments. These compendia were found to be a valuable resource for studying systems level biology and hypothesis generation. We describe the construction, benefits and challenges in creating microbial transcriptomic compendia in Chapter 1. One challenge for compendia, which integrates across many different experiments, is batch effects, which are technical sources of variability that can disrupt the detection of underlying biological signals of interest. In Chapter 2, we use a generative neural network to simulate gene expression compendia with varying amounts of technical variability and assess the ability to detect the underlying biological structure in the data after noise was added and then after batch correction was applied. We define a set of principles for how batch correction should be used in the context of these large-scale compendia. In Chapter 3 and 4 we introduce computational approaches to use compendia to improve the analysis of individual experiments and analysis of genomic patterns respectively. In Chapter 3, we develop a portable framework to distinguish between common and context specific transcriptional signals using a compendium to autogenerate a null set of expression changes. This approach allows researchers to put gene expression changes from their individual experiment of interest into the context of existing compendia of experiments. In Chapter 4 we develop an approach to examine the effect of different Pseudomonas aeruginosa genomes, using two dominant strain types, on transcriptional profiles in order to understand how traits manifest. This genome-wide approach reveals a more complete picture of how different genomes affect expression, which mediates different traits present. Overall, these compendia provide a valuable resource that computational tools can leverage to extract patterns and inform research directions
