    A World to See the Comedy by: Tom Phillips\u27s Transmediations of Dante

    Between 1976 and 1989, the production of British visual artist Tom Phillips (b. 1937) found its main source of inspiration in Dante and particularly in his Inferno. This article aims to provide a new approach to the question that drives, directly or indirectly, most of the scholarship on Phillips’s reception of Dante: how can we best describe the relation between the text of the Comedy and the images by Phillips that accompany it? Rather than relying on notions such as “adaptation” and “illustration”—which might prove inadequate to account for the text-image relations in Phillips’s works—I would propose to interpret Phillips’s reception of Dante as an attempt to create “a world to see the Comedy by.” More specifically, the analyses that follow will have four objectives. First, I will provide an overview of the transmediation strategies deployed by Phillips across his Dante-related projects. Second, I will attempt to explain the system of relations that shapes Phillips’s Dante-inspired visual world and to show, more in general, how this world ‘works’ by drawing on Georges Poulet’s phenomenology of reading and Stanley Fish’s reader-response theory. Third, I will argue that Dante’s Inferno should not be seen as an illustrated book but rather as a livre d’artiste in which Phillips transmediates his aesthetic experience of the Inferno into a visual world whose unique iconography needs, in turn, to be explained to the reader-viewer in the form of a commentary. Fourth, I will show how Phillips’s Dantesque visual world and, more in general, Phillips’s very identity as an artist depend on his identification with Dante himself—or, rather, on his ‘absorption’ of certain traits of Dante’s otherworldly journey into the conceptualization of his own life journe

    This contribution discusses WikiDante, a set of best practices for the implementation of content related to the Divine Comedy on Wikipedia, chiefly designed for (yet not limited to) the undergraduate classroom. Developed as a digital project involving undergraduate students in partnership with Wiki Education, WikiDante consisted of two iterations, the first of which created or revised entries on the women from Dante’s recent history mentioned in the poem. For two decades, scholars have treated Wikipedia as the proverbial elephant in the room—shunned, ignored, or shamefully used only in lack of more anointed tools. This essay explores the benefits of using Wikipedia for digital scholarly activism in Dante Studies, outlining the challenges and educational outcomes of organizing editing campaigns on Wikipedia focusing on Dante and his work. After discussing the project’s components, the essay indicates future venues for the applicability of this framework by scholars and educators interested in digital public scholarship and knowledge equity

    Does Schooling Improve Cognitive Abilities at Older Ages: Causal Evidence from Nonparametric Bounds

    We revisit the much-investigated relationship between schooling and health, focusing on cognitive abilities at older ages using the Harmonized Cognition Assessment Protocol in the Health & Retirement Study. To address endogeneity concerns, we employ a nonparametric partial identification approach that provides bounds on the population average treatment effect using a monotone instrumental variable together with relatively weak monotonicity assumptions on treatment selection and response. The bounds indicate potentially large effects of increasing schooling from primary to secondary but are also consistent with small and null effects. We find evidence for a causal effect of increasing schooling from secondary to tertiary on cognition. We also replicate findings from the Health & Retirement Study using another sample of older adults from the Midlife in United States Development Study Cognition Project

    Predictability of the Implant Procedure on the Edentulous Ridge

    Background: Since the development of the cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) has been utilized in dentistry. It has almost become the gold standard to plan the dental implant before the surgery. The image of the CBCT can help the surgeon to evaluate the anatomy carefully before the procedure to be more prepared. Despite the value of the radiology evaluation, the implant procedures may require more consideration rather than evaluating the anatomical factors. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the predictability of using the cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) alone to plan for implant placement. Method: CBCT images were analyzed by a periodontist, measuring the ridge heights and widths of 12 selected teeth in the maxillary and mandibular arches for 91 patients planning for the implant-supported overdenture. Selected sites were investigated if the implants could be placed with or without additional augmentation procedures by reviewing the CBCT. The patient’s dental records were reviewed and compared with the planned procedure to investigate the predictability. Result: A total of 47 patients out of the 91 had completed the implant placement on the edentulous ridge, contributing to a total of 57 upper or lower teeth implants. Based on the mixed-effects logistic regression model results, we observe that the probabilities of having the planned treatments as the digital planning are only 0.38 and 0.57, respectively, for the cases suggested with/without additional augmentation. Both predictabilities are low, implying the CBCT planning for implant placement on the edentulous ridge is not a good index. It is insufficient to predict the surgical procedures as a solo method. Conclusion: According to our findings, it was shown that digital planning alone is insufficient to serve as an individual tool to predict implant placement.     Discovering Reduced-Order Dynamical Models From Data

    This work explores theoretical and computational principles for data-driven discovery of reduced-order models of physical phenomena. We begin by describing the theoretical underpinnings of multi-parameter models through the lens of information geometry. We then explore the behavior of paradigmatic models in statistical physics, including the diffusion equation and the Ising model. In particular, we explore how coarse-graining a system affects the local and global geometry of a “model manifold” which is the set of all models that could be fit using data from the system. We emphasize connections of this idea to ideas in machine learning. Finally, we employ coarse-graining techniques to discover partial differential equations from data. We extend the approach to modeling ensembles of microscopic observables, and attempt to learn the macroscopic dynamics underlying such systems. We conclude each analysis with a computational exploration of how the geometry of learned model manifolds changes as the observed data undergoes different levels of coarse-graining
