Beyond the silhouette: Meanings and manifestations of femininity among Indian and Pakistani immigrant women in the United States
Click on the DOI link to access this article at the publishers website (may not be free).Indian and Pakistani diasporas in the United States are one of the fastest growing immigrant communities, yet there is infrequent examination of the meaning immigrant women attach to their gender and the ways their femininity manifests in everyday life. Drawing from transnational feminism theory, the present study examines the meaning( s) and manifestations of femininity among Indian and Pakistani immigrant women through analyzing their (a) narratives detailing the meaning women attach to their femininity and (b) self-selected photos illustrating the ways femininity manifests in their lives. Semistructured interviews with a photo-elicitation portion were conducted with 17 participants. We used reflexive thematic analysis to analyze women’s narratives and textual–visual thematic analysis to analyze the photos participating women shared to elaborate their ideas about femininity. Our findings illustrate Indian and Pakistani immigrant women’s meaning and manifestations of femininity through four overarching themes: relationality, nurturing oneself and others, embodiment, and negotiating and creating pluralities. This study makes theoretical contributions to the literature on immigrant women’s understanding of gender and transnational feminism theory by theorizing transnational women’s femininity at the intersections of changing cultures and contexts. Using Photovoice to determine what brings joy to the lives of adults with intellectual disabilities
Presented to the 21st Annual Symposium on Graduate Research and Scholarly Projects (GRASP) held at the Rhatigan Student Center, Wichita State University, April 11, 2025.Research completed in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, College of Health Professions.INTRODUCTION: Photovoice is a type of art-based participatory action research that allows for the inclusion of disadvantaged or vulnerable groups as authentic participants (i.e., those who actively engage in a way that reflects their true selves and beliefs). This is an established research strategy that was developed for the purpose of allowing participants the opportunity to reflect and record their lived experiences through digital storytelling.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to afford a group of adults who had been diagnosed with an intellectual disability (ID) and participated in the AbilityPoint (AP) program (an agency in Wichita, KS that seeks to empower individuals with ID) the opportunity to take photos that would answer the research question, “What brings joy to your daily life?”
METHOD: Adults who participate with AP may choose to take part in their self-advocate program. For this study, AP self-advocates were invited to attend an informational / recruitment meeting to learn about the Photovoice “Joy” project. Eighteen participants, who had all been previously diagnosed with an intellectual disability and were over 18 years of age, were recruited. Each person was provided with a digital point and shoot camera and trained to use it. They were instructed to take at least 50 pictures of people, places, and/or things that brought them joy. After three weeks, researchers met with the participants individually so that they could share their pictures and discuss how the items they had digitally recorded brought them joy. Interviews were audio recorded and transcribed. Statements were matched to the corresponding picture.
RESULTS: Data sources included photos submitted by the participants, individual interviews, and participant check backs. Data were analyzed using techniques of thematic analysis. Initial ideas were coded for topics and patterns with special attention given to what (i.e., person, place, thing, animal) and why (values and meanings) these data represented what brought the participants joy. Codes were reviewed, categorized, and developed into themes. Participants described the things that brought them joy in terms of: (1) close relationships experienced with their family, friends, animals, and faith, (2) being/feeling celebrated, (3) having access to the community, and (4) feeling comforted and/or comfortable.
CONCLUSION: It can be difficult for individuals with ID to discuss lived experiences. This study demonstrated the feasibility of using Photovoice with adults with ID to recover, document, and share information that represents their personal perspective about what brings them joy. Participants demonstrated a sense of pride and accomplishment as authentic research participants. Photovoice may provide programs who work with adults with ID insight into what brings joy to their consumers as they consider developing and/or modifying existing programs.Graduate School, Academic Affairs, University Librarie
Constrained maximization of conformal capacity
This is an open access article under the CC BY license.We consider constellations of disks which are unions of disjoint hyperbolic disks in the unit disk with fixed radii and unfixed centers. We study the problem of maximizing the conformal capacity of a constellation with a fixed number of disks under constraints on the centers in two cases. In the first case the constraint is that the centers are at most at distance R∈(0,1) from the origin and in the second case it is required that the centers are on the subsegment [−R,R] of a diameter of the unit disk. We study also similar types of constellations with hyperbolic segments instead of the hyperbolic disks. Our computational experiments suggest that a dispersion phenomenon occurs: the disks/segments go as close to the unit circle as possible under these constraints and stay as far as possible from each other. Continuation of solutions of elliptic systems from discrete sets with application to geometry of surfaces
Click on the DOI link to access this article at the publishers website (may not be free).We obtain new estimates of stability for the continuation of solutions of elliptic inequalities |∂̄u|2 ≼ a|u|2 from finite discrete sets. For this, we use Hörmander’s type of Carleman estimates for ∂̄ with boundary terms and a special weight function equal to the linear combination of Green’s functions with singularities at points where our function is given. To estimate functions in a given domain we use not only the classical Blaschke partial sum Sn but we also introduce a new sequence of numbers Mn which gives us better estimates in the case of a finite number of observations. © 2025 Walter de Gruyter GmbH, Berlin/Boston

A multi criteria electrical load prioritization framework to minimize impacts to the society: A case study based on Garden City, Kansas
Poster project completed at Wichita State University, Department of Electrical and Computer EngineeringPresented at the 22nd Annual Capitol Graduate Research Summit, Topeka, KS, March 25, 2025.Extreme weather events such as winter storms cause major power outages. These power outages create social and economic impacts on society. For instance, severe weather events caused a major power outage in July 2024 and more than 100,000 Kansans lost power. It was estimated by the Department of Energy power outages cost approximately $150 billion annually. Various grid resilience enhancement techniques have been proposed by researchers. However, these techniques require very high investment and still the protection from such extreme events is beyond human control. Prioritizing electrical load points can help planners to wisely allocate resources, especially during emergency times, to minimize social and economic impacts. Traditionally prioritization considers only technical factors and often neglects the social and economic factors. In this work, modified TOPSIS (Technique for Order Preference Similarity to Ideal) based Multi Criteria Decision Framework is proposed which considers several criteria and takes inputs from policy makers and stake holders to effectively prioritize electrical loads. The proposed method was evaluated using a case study. Where a test system was developed based on garden city, Kansas and CLARC (Customizable Artificial Community) system data. An extreme event was simulated, and the performance was recorded. The proposed method minimizes the impacts on the population, without any significant economic loss, to less than 12% compared to conventional methods over 33%. Therefore, this method can benefit the Kansans since Kansas also experiences from time-to-time major power outages and the frequency of such outages are expected to be high in the future
