The formal EU-US meniscus rehabilitation 2024 consensus: An ESSKA-AOSSM-AASPT initiative. Part I—Rehabilitation management after meniscus surgery (meniscectomy, repair and reconstruction)

Either citation can be used when citing this article.Purpose: The aim of part one of this EU-US consensus was to combine literature research and expertise to provide recommendations for the usage of rehabilitation (including physical therapy) of patients undergoing surgical treatment for degenerative meniscus lesions or acute meniscus tears (including meniscectomy, repair, or reconstruction). Prevention programmes, non-operative treatment of acute tears and degenerative lesions, return to sports and patient-reported outcome measures will be presented in a part II article. Methods: This consensus followed the European Society for Sports Traumatology and Arthroscopy (ESSKA)'s ‘formal consensus’ methodology. For this combined ESSKA, American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine and American Academy of Sports Physical Therapy initiative, 67 experts (26 in the steering group and 41 in the rating group) from 14 countries (US and 13 European countries), including orthopaedic surgeons, sports medicine doctors and physiotherapists were involved. Steering group members established guiding questions, searched the literature and proposed statements. Rating group members assessed the statements according to a Likert scale and provided grades of recommendations, reaching a final agreement about rehabilitation of the knee after meniscus surgery. Final documents were then assessed by a peer review group to address the geographical adaptability. Results: The overall level of evidence in the literature was low. Of the 19 questions (leading to 29 statements), 1 received a Grade A of recommendation, 2 a Grade B, 9 a Grade C and 17 a Grade D. Nevertheless, the mean median rating of all questions was 8.2/9 (9 being the highest rating on a scale of 1–9). The global mean rating was 8.4 ± 0.2, indicating a high agreement. Rehabilitation depends on the type of lesion, the treatment performed and is the same after medial or lateral meniscus surgery. Rehabilitation after meniscectomy should follow a criterion-based rehabilitation protocol, based on milestones rather than a time-based protocol. After meniscus repair and reconstruction, rehabilitation should be progressed according to both time and criterion-based milestones. Conclusion: Rehabilitation after meniscus surgery is a debated topic that may influence surgical outcomes if not optimally performed. This international formal consensus established clear, updated and structured recommendations for both surgeons and physiotherapists treating patients after meniscus surgery. Computational modeling of heat transfer from a horizontal array of cylinders for low Reynolds Numbers
Click on the DOI link to access this article at the publishers website (may not be free).A numerical model based on the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach was developed to investigate heat transfer from a horizontal row of circular cylinders in a tandem, side-by-side arrangement. The study involved solving momentum and energy equations using the finite volume method, with convective terms discretized using a second-order upwind method and diffusion terms discretized using central differencing. A second-order implicit technique was used to integrate the temporal term. The numerical simulations were run with various values of free stream Reynolds number and dimensionless longitudinal pitch ratio. The numerical results were compared with analytical findings from the literature and found in good agreement for low values of free stream Reynolds number. The maximum percentage error between the average Nusselt number obtained from the numerical and analytical solutions was less than 20% for larger free-stream Reynolds numbers; however, it decreased to less than 2% as the free-stream Reynolds number decreased. The good agreement between the two models at low free-stream Reynolds numbers suggests that the CFD model is valid in this range and can be used to study similar fluid flow and heat transfer problems. The information generated would be useful in the design of more efficient fluid systems involving arrays of cylinders. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA. The effectiveness of a geriatric simulation suit for improving empathy and simulating the aging process for older adults in a DPT program: a pilot study
Click on the DOI link to access this article at the publishers website (may not be free).Enhancing empathy toward older adults among physical therapy students is essential to prepare graduates to be equipped to properly treat geriatric patients in all types of healthcare settings. This pilot study evaluated the effectiveness of a homemade geriatric suit to simulate an older adult and improve empathy among physical therapy students. The Jefferson Scale of Empathy for Health Professions student version was utilized to measure empathy-related parameters before and after the geriatric simulation experience. Physical and cognitive performance tests were used to assess the effectiveness of the geriatric suit to simulate typical age-related changes in physical and cognitive performance. Additionally, sociodemographic data were collected such as age, gender and prior experience working with older adults. Following the geriatric simulation suit experience, participants did not demonstrate statistically significant post-intervention empathy scores on the Jefferson Empathy Scale (t = 2.09, p = 0.022). However, patients did demonstrate similar physical scores when compared with older adult norms while wearing the geriatric simulation suit. The geriatric simulation suit experience effectively simulated the aging process, but did not significantly increase empathy in students. The homemade geriatric simulation suit may be a feasible and cost-effective way to simulate typical age-related physical changes in older adults. © 2025 Taylor & Francis Group, LLC
Private entrepreneurs and public services: The role of endogenous capabilities
Click on the DOI link to access this article at the publishers website (may not be free).Public agencies are increasingly partnering with private entrepreneurs to deliver public services, particularly in developing countries with underdeveloped infrastructures. By sharing their resources and operations, both parties can create new capabilities in the process of value creation and devise new goals. Shared governance modes have shown to preserve the overall quality of services, but the complexity of this joint activity, coupled with the profit-maximizing orientation of private entrepreneurs, may lead to the development of new capabilities that conflict with social interests. We address these concerns by analyzing the endogenous emer-gence of capabilities in Public Private Partnerships (PPPs) and show how these can be plagued with rent-seeking and mission creep that reduce overall well-being. Drawing upon Penrose’s theory of firm growth, we show that PPPs are most likely to develop capabilities that go against the public interest when entrepreneurs are relatively effi-cient, contracts governing the provision are unclear as to the expansion of services, the attributes of the product being delivered are difficult to measure, and the service expertise is predominantly provided by the private sector. © 2025 The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd
Detection and classification of cerebral vascular injury via microwave sensing and AI
Thesis (M.S.)-- Wichita State University, College of Engineering, Dept. of Biomedical EngineeringThis thesis evaluates the capability of a monostatic RFR in detecting physiological changes which accommodate cerebral hemorrhage. The expected result is that the data collected from the RFR can be used in the training of machine learning models which can then accurately predict the flow rate of hemorrhage. The second chapter of this thesis is dedicated to a literature review covering the following: The physiology of hemorrhagic stroke, alternative monitoring methods and their underlying theories and applications, current obstacles and future works. The third chapter summarizes the methods and results of the dataset generation and artificial intelligence model development and performance.
This study used an ex vivo porcine model. Radio frequency sweeps were conducted using a vector network analyzer. The machine learning models used were: linear regression, logistic regression, random forest, k-nearest neighbors. Several convolutional neural network models were explored. Hyperparameter searches were conducted, and the best performing models were evaluated. It was concluded that linear regression and logistic regression failed to predict flow rate based on resonant frequency shifts. Both the k-nearest neighbors and random forest models performed well, achieving 81.1% and 74.2% accuracy, respectively. Finally, the results for the convolutional neural networks were inconclusive due to insufficient dataset size

Autism and the use of pause fillers: ‘Um’ and ‘uh’
Presented to the 21st Annual Symposium on Graduate Research and Scholarly Projects (GRASP) held at the Rhatigan Student Center, Wichita State University, April 11, 2025.Research completed in the Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders, College of Health Professions.INTRODUCTION: Speakers pause and revise their utterances during conversation. This process is called “disfluency”. Disfluencies affect how speakers are perceived by others, and when a high rate of speech disfluencies are produced, it can lead to negative judgements. Pauses, a type of disfluency, occur during natural speech production and can either be unfilled (silent pause) or filled with words such as ‘um ‘or ‘uh’ (filled pauses). ‘Um’ and ‘uh’ are typically used to signal hesitation or uncertainty and are intended to help the speaker maintain their speaking turn or take over a conversation from another speaker. The use of ‘uh’ has been perceived more negatively than ‘um’. Research on the use of filled pauses by autistic speakers is limited. It has been posited; however, that if fillers serve a social function, autistic speakers may have difficulties using them. Further, if these fillers result from different cognitive processes: ‘uh’ from an internally focused process used to assist the speaker and ‘um’ from an externally focused process used to assist the listener, autistic individuals would be more likely to use ‘uh’.
PURPOSE: The purpose of this project was to compare the number of ‘um/uh’ fillers used to total words produced by autistic adolescents and young adults during semi-structured conversations. Comparisons for the use of ‘um/uh’ in turn-initial position, utterance initial, or utterance medial were also calculated.
METHOD: Autistic adolescents and young adults were recruited for this study. Eleven males agreed to participate. Participants were given the Autism Diagnostics Observation Schedule -2 (ADOS-2). The ADOS-2 is administered in the form of a semi structured social setting. Sessions were approximately 45-60 minutes and were recorded for transcription purposes. Following transcription, the total number of words and the use of the fillers ‘um/uh’ were counted. Fillers were coded by position within the statement: turn-initial, utterance initial, or utterance medial.
RESULTS: The use of ‘um’ and ‘uh’ in all positions was compared to the total number of words used across all participants. The mean was 2.06, median 1.17, standard deviation (SD) 2.38, with the range of 8.27 (minimum, 0.21; maximum, 8.48). Utterance medial position uses of ‘um/uh’ compared to total use of utterance-initial and turn-initial had a mean of 248.50, median 78.95, SD 362.59, range 1,160.23 (minimum, 27.27; maximum 1187.5). Utterance initial and turn-initial use of ‘um/uh’ compared to total fillers used resulted in a mean of 48.53, median 55.88, SD 24.55, range 70.8 (minimum, 7.77; maximum, 78.57).
CONCLUSIONS: For these speakers, the filler ‘uh’ was produced twice as much as ‘um.’ Medial fillers were used more than turn or utterance initial fillers. For these participants, medial fillers appeared to be used to help the speaker “hold the floor” and consider what they were going to say next. Participants did not take the opportunity to initiate their own topics; thus, a reduced number of turn initial fillers were used.
