    Embodied research on the physical and emotional challenges wildebeests face while migrating

Presented at the Kansas Undergraduate Student Research Day at the Capitol, Topeka, KS, February 26, 2025.Sponsored by Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Hub, Dorothy and Bill Cohen Honors College.Wildebeests are known for their annual migration across the African savanna, called the “Great Migration.” Wildebeests are the primary driving force behind this movement of millions of animals across the Serengeti plains, making them a keystone species. This research investigates the behavior and emotions of wildebeests and translates their movements into a choreographed dance. The goal is to capture the essence of wildebeest migrations and create an engaging and educational dance performance. The study involved a combination of video analysis and literature review to gather comprehensive data on wildebeest behavior, emotions, and patterns during their migration. This information was then used to create the choreography for the dance. Research indicates that wildebeests exhibit a variety of unique movements, such as leaping and trotting, and they form complex group formations, shapes, and lines during migration. Wildebeests also experience emotions such as fear, anxiety, and calmness. The dance performance born from the research captured these behaviors and emotions, creating an engaging and educational performance. This research and subsequent dance is relevant to Kansas in that it exemplifies the importance of the arts and dance to Kansans

Published in print on 2025-02-01.Prader-Willi syndrome is a rare and complex genetic disorder with multiple physical and behavioral characteristics, affecting endocrine, metabolic, and neurologic systems and producing a plethora of medical complications. Early identification and diagnosis are paramount to providing timely and appropriate interventions to improve patient outcomes. Treatment should focus on neonatal feeding and growth, followed by hormonal therapy for hypothalamic dysfunction, and should then be directed at the prevention and treatment of obesity and obesity-related complications. Effective treatment requires a comprehensive multidisciplinary approach

    Continuous wave-diffuse optical tomography (CW-DOT) in human brain mapping: A review

    This is an open access article under the CC BY license.Continuous wave-diffuse optical tomography (CW-DOT) has emerged as a promising non-invasive neuroimaging technique for assessing brain function. Its ability to provide brain mapping with high spatial resolution over traditional functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) has garnered significant interest in clinical and cognitive neuroscience. In this review, we critically summarized the hardware, reconstruction algorithms, and applications of CW-DOT for human brain mapping, providing an up-to-date overview and guidelines for future studies to conduct CW-DOT studies. ScienceDirect, PubMed, Web of Science, and IEEE Xplore databases were searched from their inception up to 1 July 2024. A total of 83 articles were included in the final systematic review. The review focused on existing hardware systems, reconstruction algorithms for CW-DOT, and the applications of CW-DOT in both clinical settings and cognitive neuroscience. Finally, we highlighted current challenges and potential directions of CW-DOT in future research, including the absence of standardized protocols and a pressing need for enhanced quantitative precision. This review underscores the sophisticated capabilities of CW-DOT systems, particularly in the realm of human brain imaging.
