    A comparison of sCO2 Brayton Cycles for thermal energy recovery in flight

    Click on the DOI link to access this article at the publishers website (may not be free).Supercritical carbon dioxide Brayton cycles offer high power densities, and limited research within aerospace propulsion has indicated they can reduce fuel burn by recovering exhaust heat from turbofan engines. Recent research in terrestrial applications has shown that the cycle topologies considered in propulsion research are sub-optimal for gas turbine bottoming cycles, suggesting a partial heating cycle offers the potential to recover more exhaust heat. Existing propulsion research fails to diagnose a pinch point in the pre-cooler heat exchanger, leading to a larger heat exchanger than is necessary and limiting total power output. This research adapts lessons from terrestrial research and considers novel means of mitigating this pinch point. © 2025, American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics Inc, AIAA.     From sound to synapses: How music impacts psychological states and emotional intelligence

    Third place winner of poster presentations for Social Sciences & Humanities at the 24th Annual Undergraduate Research and Creative Activity Forum (URCAF) held in the Woolsey Hall, Wichita State University, April 25, 2025.Music's capacity to influence psychological state, enhance emotional intelligence (EI), and induce mental imagery is bound up with subjective experience; yet the individual differences which underlie such effects are not well understood. This qualitative study examines music's interplay with emotion and cognition from three different perspectives: (1) music's capacity to modify psychological state by means of such mechanisms as arousal, recall of past personal experiences, and perceptual mental imagery; (2) music's role in promoting EI by means of auditory stimulation that allows for emotional reinterpretation; (3) music's ability to produce evocative imagery in the imagination, connecting perception with imagination. Whilst theoretical accounts, such as Wallin's (1991) scaffold model of music for emotional repair and Margulis's (2013) exploration of music's semantic transcendence, imply certain universality, this work highlights the diversity of responses that are influenced by cultural environment, personal history, and sensitivity to emotion. Employing qualitative methods of observational coding of facial expression, semi- structured interviews, and thematic analysis of reported imagery accounts, this research aims to explore to what extent psychological profiles and listeners shape their reaction to music. How, for example, do autobiographical associations modify emotional response to a particular piece of music? What role does facial feedback, a marker of underlying emotional resonance, play in interpreting mental imagery? By focusing on qualitative data, the analysis highlights interaction between music's structural properties (like rhythm and contour) and subjective meaning, thus illustrating how listeners together generate meaning through imaginative embodied practices. The results question the assumption of standardized models in relation to the impact of music, highlighting the urgency for context-specific and personalized interventions in educational and therapeutic settings. A model advanced by the research envisions music as a bidirectional dialogue involving sound and subjectivity, thus providing a platform for individualized musical interactions that facilitate emotional growth and cognitive enrichment

    Anti-health legislation and its impact on the health and well-being of the gender-expansive community

    Thesis (Ph.D.)-- Wichita State University, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Dept. of PsychologyThe rights of gender-expansive individuals, and more specifically the transgender community, have become the public target of a nationwide political and social campaign by the Republican Party, who have spent hundreds of millions of dollars on political advertisements pointedly spreading misinformation with the purpose of stoking public fear and rejection of G.E. people (Simmons-Duffin, 2024; Trans Legislation Tracker, n.d.). Their stated reason for this campaign is to effectively “erase” the G.E. community through social rejection and the passing of sweeping legislation that ranges from banning G.E. people from public activities and facilities to federally criminalizing physicians who provide gender-affirming care (Olsavsky et al., 2023). Prior research has largely focused on gaining quantitative insight on health outcomes, but few provide rich qualitative insight into the personal experiences of G.E. individuals and how this campaign has directly impacted their quality of life and mental wellbeing. Results identified five broad themes: legislative impact, social acceptance, familial dynamics, inner-community dynamics, and maintenance of mental health. The essential, invariant structure described the essence of gender-expansive people’s experiences and was thoroughly validated through the process of member checking with every participant. The findings indicate that gender-expansive people, specifically transgender women, encounter resistance, harassment, and vilification on every ecological level, and that it is directly contributing to worsening mental health outcomes. The present study is the only identifiable phenomenological exploration of gender-expansive lived experiences. The results suggest that this is an appropriate framework for understanding the experiences and wellbeing of gender-expansive individuals

Compared with previous formulations, this pioneering model offered a more realistic and dynamic representation of the contact forces due to the incorporation of energy dissipation during collisions between solid materials. Over the past 50 years, the Hunt and Crossley contact force model has significantly influenced a wide range of disciplines, such as multibody dynamics, machines and mechanisms, robotics, biomechanics, vehicle dynamics, crashworthiness, and materials science, just to mention a few. This paper celebrates the golden jubilee of the Hunt and Crossley revolutionary approach, revisiting its theoretical foundations and tracing its historical development and impact.     Prioritizing organizational success and the pursuit of victory: Understanding the feelings of exclusion in the workplace

    This is an open access article under the CC BY license.This study investigates how an organizational bottom-line mentality (BLM) climate influences employee perceptions of workplace ostracism, with a focus on the moderating role of zero-sum beliefs (ZSB). Using a survey of 220 full-time respondents in the United States, we conducted regression analysis and moderated mediation tests via Hayes' PROCESS macro in R. We measured perceived organizational BLM, employee BLM, ZSB, and work ostracism using validated scales. The results supported all five hypotheses. An organizational BLM climate positively influences employee BLM, which in turn increases perceptions of ostracism. This relationship is stronger for employees with high ZSB. Additionally, the indirect effect of an organizational BLM climate on ostracism through employee BLM is significantly moderated by ZSB. The findings highlight that employees with high ZSB experience greater ostracism in high-BLM environments. Drawing on Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) this study investigates and underscores the negative interpersonal outcomes of a BLM climate. By addressing zero-sum beliefs through targeted interventions, organizations can balance financial objectives with employee well-being, enhancing workplace dynamics and morale. © 202
