    Impacts of aggressive aviation fluids on physical and chemical properties of aerospace-grade fiber composites

    Click on the DOI link to access this article at the publishers website (may not be free).Fiber-reinforced composites (FRCs) are crucial in the aerospace industry because of their lightweight and durable features. However, concerns exist regarding their performance when exposed to aviation fluids. This study examines how five aviation fluids-hydraulic fluid (HF), isopropyl alcohol (Iso P), dry cleaning solvent (DCS), methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and an oil-water mixture-affect aerospace-grade carbon and glass fiber composites over 15 and 30 days. MEK caused the highest fluid absorption in both composite types, with glass fiber composites being more prone to degradation. Interlaminar shear strength analysis showed that carbon fiber composites retained better resistance to delamination when exposed to aviation fluids, with MEK causing the greatest reduction in interlaminar shear strength (ILSS). Specifically, the ILSS of carbon fiber composites decreases by about 30% in MEK, while that of glass fiber composites drops by around 45%. Dynamic mechanical analysis demonstrated notable decreases in storage modulus and glass transition temperatures, indicating significant softening of the polymer matrix. Energy dispersive spectroscopy identified fluid-specific elemental signatures at fiber-matrix interfaces, such as phosphorus and sulfur enrichment in HF-treated samples and chloride penetration in MEK-exposed specimens. The superior performance of carbon fiber composites results from better interfacial stability compared to hydroxyl-rich glass fiber surfaces, which are vulnerable to chemical attack.     The interaction of matrix components and cells regulates the cellular and molecular process of glioma cells

    Presented to the 21st Annual Symposium on Graduate Research and Scholarly Projects (GRASP) held at the Rhatigan Student Center, Wichita State University, April 11, 2025.Research completed in the Department of Biological Sciences, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.INTRODUCTION: The production of fibrous proteins such as collagens in glioma extracellular matrix (ECM) increase compared with normal brain. The increased collagen type I and type IV alter the brain microenvironment and result in the change of glioma cell motility. Studies suggested that the increased collagen level in matrix altered the mechanical properties of the brain ECM and the increase of matrix stiffness may increase the glioma cell migration and invasion. The direct evidence is lacking on how collagen and hyaluronic acid in ECM affect glioma cell migration and proliferation. PURPOSE: In this work, we report the migration and cell cycle for glioma cells grown on collagen, or hyaluronic acid substrates. METHODS: Glioblastoma cells were grown on different substrates and labeled with Rhodamine Phalloidin to study the cell morphology. Flowcytometry was performed to study the cell cycle on different substrates. Time-lapse microscopy was used to study tumor cell motility. RESULTS: Our research found the different migration speeds of glioma cells on different substrates. Collagen surface promoted tumor cell migration. The tumor cells showed elongated shape on collagen substrate. Different glioma cell line showed different cell cycle behavior in the cell culture. CONCLUSION: Our study showed the impact of extracellular matrix components on cell proliferation and motility.Graduate School, Academic Affairs, University Librarie

    The impact of Professor Allan Rosenbaum: Global champion of public administration, field-builder, teacher, and friend

    This is an open access article under the CC BY license.Allan Rosenbaum was a dedicated public administration professor and administrator who made significant contributions to the field over his six-decade career. He held various academic and administrative positions and played leadership roles in professional associations, becoming a global champion of public administration. Allan was known for his passion, humanity, decency, and friendship, which were evident in his professional contributions and the way he nurtured those who worked with him. In this remembrance piece, we highlight Allan's impact on the field and many public administrators and scholars across the globe. © 2025 The Author(s).     Investigating the relationship between population density surrounding an airport and the number of wildlife strikes per operation

Abdulaziz (Associate Editor)This study investigates the relationship between population density and wildlife strikes per operation at 78 airports in the Southeastern Region of the United States: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and South Carolina. The data are derived from the year 2020. The descriptive statistics revealed consistent wildlife strike rates across varying operations and population densities. The inferential statistics revealed a very weak correlation and no statistical significance. After removing the outliers, the correlation and statistical significance remained the same. Despite expectations and support from literature findings, the data revealed no relationship between population density and wildlife strikes per operation, indicating further research is necessary to improve safety

    Thesis (M.M.)-- Wichita State University, College of Fine Arts, School of MusicFaces (in a park by a cul-de-sac) is a suite of twelve movements conceived for seven instruments and dance. The instrumentation is based off of Schoenberg’s Pierrot Lunaire, which featured flute, clarinet, violin, cello, and piano. This combination and variations thereof are still popular with new music ensembles; this piece swaps clarinet for alto saxophone and adds horn and a percussion part for vibraphone and auxiliary instruments. The work is set in and near a common suburban park, and each movement reflects an interaction within it. Beyond this surface-level premise, there is ample room for interpretation. Faces could take place in the afternoon of a people-watcher observing a variety of characters; however, it could also transpire over the course of decades in the same people’s lives. As such, the audience may view themselves as a witness or participant in the portrayed encounters. The choices of instrumentation and programmatic content intend to promote the longevity of the work in hopes that it will receive fresh performances after the premiere. Within Faces, there are three acts that each comprise four movements. The first is centered around children. In “Idyll,” a family of three moves into the first completed home in a new subdivision. The child doesn’t have much for company but his imagination and the surrounding traces of wilderness. A recurring motivic third invokes both the sound of a nursery rhyme and the summer chorus of insects. “Contradance” follows the same child weaving through the playground of a fuller neighborhood in pursuit of a friend; the title refers to a regency dance style and the whirling merry-go-rounds. “Yonder” depicts two children stargazing; as they become more creative with constellations, they conquer their fear of the immense night sky. As the vibraphone introduces the movement, other instrumentalists strike a piece of tuned pipe freely in order to evoke wind chimes

    Finding joy in designing and thriving in a new faculty role

    This work is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 4.0 License .In the summer of 2024, Wichita State University Libraries introduced new faculty librarian positions within Research and Instruction services including an Assessment & User Experience Librarian and a Student Success Librarian. As these roles are newly established, library administration left expectations largely undefined beyond a few key responsibilities. Both positions were filled in October 2024 by individuals without comparable faculty library experience, presenting challenges and opportunities for these new faculty members as they find joy in “choosing their own adventure.” While distinct, these roles complement each other in their functional titles and offer several paths for the future. This presentation will share insight into the experience of new faculty in these positions from day-to-day work to navigating the tenure and promotion process. We seek to provide first-hand knowledge for those who may be involved in creating new faculty librarian positions as well as for individuals stepping into similar roles. As the needs of higher education communities and their libraries change, intentional hiring practices and aligning job descriptions with library goals will be imperative for individual and institutional success. This session will explore how new faculty positions can be structured for success, ensuring they align with institutional needs and professional expectations

    Presented to the 21st Annual Symposium on Graduate Research and Scholarly Projects (GRASP) held at the Rhatigan Student Center, Wichita State University, April 11, 2025.Research completed in the Department of Biological Sciences, Fairmount College of Liberal Arts and Sciences.INTRODUCTION: The highly invasive behavior of glioma cells can cause poor prognosis and a high mortality rate. The interactions between tumor cells and the extracellular matrix result in a complex invasive process. The collagen molecules produced by the glioblastoma incorporate into the tumor matrix and they tend to form fibrous scaffolds that promote tumor cell migration. Though the critical role of collagen in tumor invasion has been recognized, how it affects tumor cell motility and proliferation has not been well-understood yet. The nanofabrication method allows the generation of nanofibrous scaffolds that can mimic in vivo tumor matrix structure. PURPOSE: In this study, we generate collagen nanofibrous that mimic tumor extracellular matrix using electrospinning method. We investigated interaction between the glioma cells and scaffolds and tried to determine the effect of scaffolds on tumor cell motility and proliferation. METHODS: Electrospinning was used to generate various types of nanofibrous scaffolds including collagen-polycaprolactone (PCL) matrix. The fibers were characterized by Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR). The cell migration and proliferation on the fibers was studied by time-lapse microscopy and flowcytometry respectively. RESULTS: Our research found that glioma cells showed high viability on nanofiber matrix. The cells migrated dynamically on the nanofibers. We observed high cell proliferation rate for tumor cells on nanofibers in cell cycle analysis. CONCLUSION: Our study showed that the fibrous structure maintains the cell motility and particularly promote tumor cell proliferation.Graduate School, Academic Affairs, University Librarie
