Use of nanotechnology-based nanomaterial as a substitute for antibiotics in monogastric animals
Nanotechnology has emerged as a promising solution for tackling antibiotic resistance in monogastric animals, providing innovative methods to enhance animal health and well-being. This review explores the novel use of nanotechnology-based nanomaterials as substitutes for antibiotics in monogastric animals. With growing global concerns about antibiotic resistance and the need for sustainable practices in animal husbandry, nanotechnology offers a compelling avenue to address these challenges. The objectives of this review are to find out the potential of nanomaterials in improving animal health while reducing reliance on conventional antibiotics. We examine various forms of nanomaterials and their roles in promoting gut health and also emphasize fresh perspectives brought by integrating nanotechnology into animal healthcare. Additionally, we delve into the mechanisms underlying the antibacterial properties of nanomaterials and their effectiveness in combating microbial resistance. By shedding light on the transformative role of nanotechnology in animal production systems. This review contributes to our understanding of how nanotechnology can provide safer and more sustainable alternatives to antibiotics.O
Integrating animal tracking datasets at a continental scale for mapping Eurasian lynx habitat
Aim: The increasing availability of animal tracking datasets collected across many sites provides new opportunities to move beyond local assessments to enable detailed and consistent habitat mapping at biogeographical scales. However, integrating wildlife datasets across large areas and study sites is challenging, as species' varying responses to different environmental contexts must be reconciled. Here, we compare approaches for large-area habitat mapping and assess available habitat for a recolonizing large carnivore, the Eurasian lynx (Lynx lynx). Location: Europe. Methods: We use a continental-scale animal tracking database (450 individuals from 14 study sites) to systematically assess modelling approaches, comparing (1) global strategies that pool all data for training versus building local, site-specific models and combining them, (2) different approaches for incorporating regional variation in habitat selection and (3) different modelling algorithms, testing nonlinear mixed effects models as well as machine-learning algorithms. Results: Testing models on training sites and simulating model transfers, global and local modelling strategies achieved overall similar predictive performance. Model performance was the highest using flexible machine-learning algorithms and when incorporating variation in habitat selection as a function of environmental variation. Our best-performing model used a weighted combination of local, site-specific habitat models. Our habitat maps identified large areas of suitable, but currently unoccupied lynx habitat, with many of the most suitable unoccupied areas located in regions that could foster connectivity between currently isolated populations. Main Conclusions: We demonstrate that global and local modelling strategies can achieve robust habitat models at the continental scale and that considering regional variation in habitat selection improves broad-scale habitat mapping. More generally, we highlight the promise of large wildlife tracking databases for large-area habitat mapping. Our maps provide the first high-resolution, yet continental assessment of lynx habitat across Europe, providing a consistent basis for conservation planning for restoring the species within its former range.O
Applying the European Union (EU) assessment initiative of forest sustainability in Africa: A case study of the timber harvesting impact on the environment in Sierra Leone
The European Union (EU) provides both financial and expert support for sustainable forest management initiatives and also boosts compliance with such initiatives in Africa. Thus, there is a need to monitor the progress of implementing such initiatives. The objective of this paper is to describe the role of timber harvesting entities in environmental impact discussions, and to also identify the role of EU institutions in promoting forest sustainability in Sierra Leone. Data were collected in a controlled survey from four communities, using a questionnaire formulated according to guidelines recommended by Babbie and Mouton (2010). The reliability test shows a 0.68 internal consistency among the latent variables (Cronbach alpha test). The selected four communities were Bambawo, Dia, Basara, and Menima, with a population of 6 000, 5 400, 7 500, and 5 600 inhabitants, respectively (Stats SL 2021). A Confirmatory Factor Assessment (CFA) was used for a descriptive statistical analysis of the data. The results showed that the environmental impact has an eigenvalue of 1.08, where only variables with a factor loading exceeding 0.5 were used. The paper concludes with discussions and relevant recommendations on mitigating the impacts of timber harvesting on the environment within the study area.O

Certifikovaná metodika obsahuje detailní popis laboratorní analýzy založené na molekulárně-genetickém přístupu využívajícím panel jednonukleotidových polymorfizmů (SNP) u genů kandidátních pro rezistenci a imunitní odpověď za účelem vyhodnocení genetické variability v těchto genech včely medonosné v České republice. Byl sestaven panel 13 validních, polymorfních lokusů vhodných pro rutinní testování metodou sekvenování za primerem, tzv. SNaPshot, která je spojena fluorescenční kapilární elektroforézou a amplifikací genů pomocí multiplexní polymerázové řetězové reakce (PCR).The certified methodology contains a detailed description of a laboratory analysis based on a molecular genetic approach using a panel of single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in candidate genes for resistance and immune response to evaluate genetic variability in these genes in honey bees in the Czech Republic. A panel of 13 valid, polymorphic loci suitable for routine testing was assembled using a primer sequencing method (SNaPshot), which is coupled with fluorescence capillary electrophoresis and gene amplification by multiplex polymerase chain reaction (PCR).Published Versio
Powdery mildews (Erysiphales) species spectrum on plants of family Lamiaceae in the Czech Republic
This article focuses on the occurrence of powdery mildews in the Lamiaceae family in the Czech Republic. A comprehensive analysis of morphological characteristics supported by molecular analysis of partial ITS sequences and analysis of host species gained important insights regarding the occurrence and diversity of powdery mildews. Thirty-four plant samples of the Lamiaceae family infected by powdery mildew collected in the Czech Republic between 2015-2022 were analysed. In these samples, the occurrence of all newly described species within the former Golovinomyces biocellatus complex was confirmed (G. biocellatus, G. salviae, G. neosalviae and G. monardae), and Neoërysiphe galeopsidis was also verified. Moreover, our study expands the already reported host species list of G. biocellatus complex within the Lamiaceae family.O
Advancements in Solar Panel Technology in Civil Engineering for Revolutionizing Renewable Energy Solutions-A Review
Globally, solar energy has become a major contributor to the rapid adoption of renewable energy. Significant energy savings have resulted from the widespread utilization of solar energy in the industrial, residential, and commercial divisions. This review article comprises research conducted over the past 15 years (2008-2023), utilizing a comprehensive collection of 163 references. Significantly, a considerable focus is directed towards the period from 2020 to 2023, encompassing an extensive investigation into the latest developments in solar panel technology in civil engineering. The article examines the incorporation of solar panels into building designs and addresses installation-related structural considerations. In addition, the present review examines the applications of solar panels in terms of innovative infrastructure development applications of solar panels, such as photovoltaic parking lot canopies and photovoltaic noise barriers, which contribute to improved energy efficiency. It also emphasizes their role in water management systems, including water treatment plants, water pumping and irrigation systems, energy-efficient solar desalination technologies, and promoting sustainable water practices. In addition, this study examines how solar panels have been incorporated into urban planning, including smart cities and public parks, thereby transforming urban landscapes into greener alternatives. This study also examined the use of solar panels in building materials, such as façade systems and solar-powered building envelope solutions, demonstrating their versatility in the construction industry. This review explores the diverse applications of solar energy, which promotes sustainable practices in various industries. Owing to the ongoing research, solar energy holds great promise for a greener and cleaner future.O
Optimization and Characterization of a Novel Antioxidant Naringenin-Loaded Hydrogel for Encouraging Re-Epithelization in Chronic Diabetic Wounds: A Preclinical Study
Nonhealed wounds are one of the most dangerous side effects of type-2 diabetes, which is linked to a high frequency of bacterial infections around the globe that eventually results in amputation of limbs. The present investigation aimed to explore the drug-loaded (naringenin) hydrogel system for chronic wound healing. The hydrogel membranes comprising Na-alginate with F-127 and poly(vinyl alcohol) were developed to treat chronic wounds using the quality-by-design (QbD) approach. The optimized formulation was tested for various parameters, such as swelling, gel fraction, water vapor transition rate (WVTR), etc. In vitro evaluation indicated that a drug-loaded hydrogel displayed better tissue adhesiveness and can release drugs for a prolonged duration of 12 h. Scratch assay performed on L929 cell lines demonstrated good cell migration. The diabetic wound healing potential of the hydrogel membrane was assessed in streptozotocin-induced male Wistar rats (50 mg/kg). Higher rates of wound closure, re-epithelialization, and accumulation of collagen were seen in in vivo experiments. Histopathologic investigation correspondingly implied that the drug-loaded hydrogel could enhance dermal wound repair. The improved antimicrobial and antioxidant properties with expedited healing indicated that the drug-loaded hydrogel is a perfect dressing for chronic wounds.O
The shaping of onion seedlings performance through substrate formulation and co-inoculation with beneficial microorganism consortia
Introduction: Smart management in crop cultivation is increasingly supported by application of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and plant growth-promoting microorganisms (PGPM), which sustain soil fertility and plant performance. The aim of this study was the evaluation of the effects of consortia composed of (Claroideoglomus claroideum BEG96, Claroideoglomus etunicatum BEG92, Funneliformis geosporum BEG199, Funneliformis mosseae BEG 95, and Rhizophagus irregularis BEG140) and PGPM (Azospirillum brasilense - AZ, or Saccharothrix sp. - S) on onion cultivated in growing media with a composition corresponding to a degraded soil. Methods: Three types of substrate formulations were used, with peat:sand ratios of 50:50, 70:30, 100:0 (v:v). The analysis of substrate parameters crucial for its fertility (pH, salinity, sorption complex capacity, and elements' content) and characteristics reflecting onion seedlings' performance (fresh weight, stress biomarkers, and elements' content) was performed. Results: AMF colonized onion roots in all treatments, showing increasing potential to form intercellular structures in the substrates rich in organic matter. Additionally, co-inoculation with PGPM microorganisms accelerated arbuscular mycorrhiza establishment. Increased antioxidant activity and glutathione peroxidase (GPOX) activity of onion roots sampled from the formulations composed of peat and sand in the ratio of 100:0, inoculated with AMF+S, and positive correlation between GPOX, fresh weight and antioxidant activity of onion roots reflected the successful induction of plant acclimatization response. Total phenols content was the highest in roots and leaves of onion grown in substrates with 70:30 peat:sand ratio, and, in the case of roots, it was correlated with AMF colonization parameters but not with antioxidant activity. Discussion: AMF and PGPM efficiency in supporting onion growth should be linked to the increased onion root system capacity in mineral salts absorption, resulting in more efficient aboveground biomass production. AMF and PGPM consortia were effective in releasing minerals to soluble fraction in substrates rich in organic matter, making elements available for uptake by onion root system, though this phenomenon depended on the PGPM species. Microorganism consortia enhanced onion seedlings' performance also in substrates with lower content of organic carbon through plant biofertilization and phytostimulation.O
In vitro and in vivo antibacterial activity of selected essential oil components against Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum and Pectobacterium atrosepticum causing bacterial soft rot of potato tubers
Pectinolytic bacteria cause bacterial soft rot of potato tubers. The most significant losses occur during storage. The efficacy of essential oil (EO) components carvacrol, cinnamaldehyde, d-carvone, l-menthone, R-(+)-limonene and thymol was tested against Pectobacterium carotovorum subsp. carotovorum (Pcc) and Pectobacterium atrosepticum (Pa). Disc diffusion, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC), and minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) tests were performed in vitro, as well as potato disc and whole tuber maceration tests in vivo. Under in vitro conditions, cinnamaldehyde was the most effective against both bacteria (MIC 0.5 μL/mL, MBC 1.5 μL/mL). Both bacteria were found to be more susceptible to d-carvone (MIC 1.5-2.5 μL/mL, MBC 2.5 μL/mL) and thymol (MIC 2.5-5 μL/mL, MBC 3-5 μL/mL). R-(+)-limonene was the least effective. Results from the potato tuber disc maceration test confirmed a significant antibacterial effect of cinnamaldehyde at a concentration of 1.5 μL/mL. No rotted area was observed on potato tuber discs after treatment with l-menthone at concentrations of 2.5 μL/mL and 10 μL/mL against Pcc. A more pronounced effect was obtained when carvacrol was used at concentrations of 5 μL/mL against Pcc and 10 μL/mL against Pa. Disease severity tests on potato tubers after soaking for 20 min at MIC concentration of the EO components followed by 7 days of incubation at room temperature and 15 oC confirmed the antibacterial activity of cinnamaldehyde (0.5 μl/ml), l-menthone (2.5 μl/ml) and carvacrol (5-10 μl/ml). Cinnamaldehyde, l-menthone, and carvacrol may be recommended for further testing to treat stored potato tubers.O
Exploring cross-cultural variations in visual attention patterns inside and outside national borders using immersive virtual reality
We examined theories of cross-cultural differences in cognitive style on a sample of 242 participants representing five cultural groups (Czechia, Ghana, eastern and western Turkey, and Taiwan). The experiment involved immersive virtual environments consisting of two salient focal objects and a complex background as stimuli, which were presented using virtual reality headsets with integrated eye-tracking devices. The oculomotor patterns confirmed previous general conclusions that Eastern cultures have a more holistic cognitive style, while Western cultures predominantly have an analytic cognitive style. The differences were particularly noticeable between Taiwan and the other samples. However, we found that the broader cultural background of each group was perhaps just as important as geographical location or national boundaries. For example, observed differences between Eastern (more holistic style) and Western Turkey (more analytic style), suggest the possible influence of varying historical and cultural characteristics on the cognitive processing of complex visual stimuli.O
