Forced immigrants and placemaking: how the interior design of refugee homes impacts their smooth integration in host community
This study investigated whether placemaking techniques were present in the interior design of homes occupied by refugees who moved to Oklahoma City after evacuating from Afghanistan in August of 2021, after the democratic government fell to Taliban forces and the United States Military was recalled from the region.
The data collection process consisted of semi-structured interviews being conducted at the participants’ homes, after which a brief tour of the home was provided by the household heads. Additionally, each household head was asked to share photographs of their native home in Afghanistan during the interview, so that a comparison between how the interior design of those homes influenced the design decisions made for their new Oklahoma City homes can be conducted. A cultural liaison was commissioned to translate during the interviews, so that any language-related barriers could be eliminated from all sides.
The identified placemaking methods and needs addressed by the participants demonstrated a clear and strong presence of a collective sense of identity among Afghan people. As a highly communal culture deeply rooted in religion and tradition, many aspects of the standardized housing units common for United States residential construction needed adaptation in order to accommodate the newcomers’ needs.
Rather than approaching interior design from an esthetic perspective, the collected data suggests that the Afghan home design style is primarily focused on functionality despite overflowing with rich colors, elaborate patterns, hand-carved furniture, and dynamic textures – all pointing to an aesthetic focus. Due to the strong sense of unity and pride in the country and its heritage, each visited home paid homage to their homeland through an array of placemaking interventions, as detailed out in this dissertation
Gender Inequality in Career and Technical Education: Women in Nontraditional Trade and Industry Programs.
This study explored why we have such an underrepresentation of women in our CTE trade and industry programs. The purpose of the research was to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of the phenomena surrounding nontraditional students within traditional CTE trade and industry programs of study to discover practical and real-world applicable and equitable actions that can be taken to provide improved equalitarian opportunities. This general inductive qualitative study focused on five Oklahoma City metro area technology centers, each representing diverse communities, socioeconomics, ethnicities, and races. A total of ten nontraditional female students, two from each district, who were currently enrolled in a male-dominated program of study, and eight CTE faculty and staff members, including one counselor from each district, were interviewed one-on-one utilizing tailored protocol in a semi-structured setting. Three primary themes emerged from the data: The impact of gender roles and stereotypes, the reality that mentors, representation, and support matter, and lastly, the binding characteristic of resiliency among nontraditional students. The underlying conclusion of this research is that while legal protections prohibit discrimination based on gender, culturally ingrained gender roles and stereotypes are still active and pervasive in society. Actionable implications for practice include increased and intentional representation in marketing and recruiting efforts and support strategies such as peer support groups and regular check-ins with counselors
Misbehavior aware on-demand intrusion detection system to enhance security in VANETs with efficient rogue nodes detection and prevention techniques
Vehicular ad-hoc networks (VANETs) facilitate vehicles to broadcast beacon messages to ensure road safety. The goal behind sharing the information through beacon messages is to disseminate network state or emergency information. The exchange of information is susceptible to security attacks of different kinds. Amongst various problems to be solved in VANETs is the issue of rogue nodes and their impact on the network. Rogue nodes are malicious vehicles that are vicious to cause severe damage to the network by modifying or altering false data in beacon messages that could lead to catastrophic consequences like trapping a group of vehicles, road accidents, vehicle collisions, etc. This thesis discusses the problems associated with the security VANETs in the presence of rogue nodes.
We proposed three novel intrusion detection frameworks to detect the rogue nodes responsible for false information, Sybil, and platoon control maneuver attacks only by analyzing and comparing the beacon messages broadcast over the network. The novelty of our frameworks lies in containing network damage and securing VANETs from the harmful impact of rogue nodes. The proposed frameworks are simulated using SUMO, OMNET++, and VENTOS, and the results obtained have been presented, discussed, and compared to existing frameworks. Results show that the developed methods improve the systems’ performance compared to existing methods even when the number of rogue nodes increases in the region
Application of Rapid-Setting Belitic Calcium Sulfoaluminate Cements in Pretensioned, Prestressed Concrete
In recent years, urgency for adopting sustainable materials has come to the forefront of the cement and concrete industries. Belitic calcium sulfoaluminate (BCSA) cement is an alternative cement which has a production energy demand of up to 60% less than portland cement and emits 30-50% less CO2. Although BCSA cement has been used in the U.S. for pavements, bridge decks, floors, and tanks, information on characteristics relevant to prestressed concrete is lacking. The purpose of this research was to establish strand bond, prestress loss, and time-dependent performance characteristics for BCSA cement concrete to increase production efficiency and member performance for precast, prestressed concrete. BCSA cement-based concrete can reach minimum strength for prestress transfer much sooner than portland cement concrete due to inherent rapid hardening properties. These time savings could allow precasters to clear stressing beds more quickly and streamline productivity, but the impact of early loading on long-term behavior is unknown. Mix designs for self-consolidating BCSA cement concrete were developed to provide sufficient workable time at various temperatures while reaching compressive strength required for prestress release in 2-3 hours. Material properties including flexural strength, elastic modulus, creep, and shrinkage were established. Untensioned large block pullout tests were used to characterize bond performance with age and fifteen 20 ft long prestress girders were fabricated and tested for strand transfer length, development length, and long-term prestress losses. Measured strand bond strengths were adequate and transfer and development lengths were shorter than code predictions. The measured material properties were used to model prestress losses which were compared with the values measured from the girder tests. Measured prestress losses were significantly lower than existing equations indicated, while models developed from material property data produced more accurate estimates

Dancing with the Spirit Realm: An Iconographic Analysis of Renewal Imagery on the Engraved Shells from Craig Mound at Spiro, Oklahoma
The goal of this project was to determine whether or not a set of reproducible criteria could be developed and employed to identify depictions of dance in Spiroan iconography. Combining the previously identified depictions of dance with the ones gleaned from the reproducible criteria allowed for additional questions to be asked. These included whether or not certain thematic groupings are more pertinent to dance, whether or not the use of the multiple-horizons technique could be used to identify dance circles, and if there were any differences in the depiction of dance based on style. Additionally, this project helped contextualize the significance of dance as a means of enacting history for the Spiroans and the descendant Caddo community. There have been calls for projects like this (Reilly 2020), and elsewhere successful attempts at dance iconography have been made, such as Looper’s (2009) Maya work. This project took inspiration from these calls and sought to deepen the understanding of dance iconography at the Spiro Mounds site
Hakaniyutu Unu Haniyu? Why Are You Making? Examining Comanche Women’s Texts Through Comanche Language and Cultural Philosophy
One can examine Comanche women’s spoken stories in the Comanche language for
cultural and philosophical insight through the metaphor of oiling and braiding one’s hair because
oil (or yuhu, pronounced “you” in Comanche, meaning the nouns, oil, grease, lard, or fat) has
historical roots in Comanche culture, where women would use yuhu to braid their hair to adorn
themselves, to keep their hair free from their faces, to function while they cared for their
families, to ready themselves for battle, or to protect their hair from lice. The metaphor of oiling
and braiding hair helps us understand the culture and philosophy behind Comanche women’s
stories because yuhu is homphonically related to yu (also pronounced you), which has a plethora
of grammar functions and variations. Generally, the prefix, yu-, means to “do right,” but the
suffix version, -yu, serves as a progressive verb marker. My study argues for a rhetorical yu by
collectively examining the various yu forms and their relationships to narrative in Comanche
women’s stories. Like the oil yuhu in braids, yu binds and weaves a story to move the plot along.
The sentence, hakaniyutu unu yuhaniyu, meaning “Why are you making?” or “How do you make
right?” best conveys not only yu’s ability to weave meaning at the sentence level, but also its
fluidity in meaning, indicating its linguistic woven-ness, or braid-like, kwisikatu, meaning braid,
qualities (Taa Numu Tekwapuʔha Tuboopu 96). In Comanche cultural practice, braiding is
accompanied by story that contains many meanings and fosters a memorable learning
experience. The translated meanings behind hakaniyutu unu haniyu (or hakaniyutu unu
yuhaniyu) are just as woven as Comanche braiding techniques and as yu’s grammar roles and
narrative relationships, yet many of the sentence’s translations pertain to questions of process,
movement, aesthetics, aspiration, and etiquette. Yu lends itself well as a lens for examining the
culture and philosophy behind Comanche women’s stories, which suggest a rhetorical yu that can
be applied to both Comanche texts and non-Comanche Indigenous texts. In other words, yu is in
Comanche hairstyling. Yu is in Comanche language. Yu is in Comanche stories. And yu is in the
Comanche artistic air, so much so, that in Comanche, suniyutu is “because, for that reason”—it
just is. My study seeks to question how do Comanche women’s stories create their own criteria
for how to story “right?” Comanche language can be used to further reinforce Comanche
women’s notions of the story process, thereby further legitimizing Comanche women’s standards
of artifice, storytelling, and rhetoric that already exist both culturally, philosophically, and
linguistically in modern Comanche societies.

The Effect of Acute Citrulline Malate Supplementation on Mitochondrial Function, Oxygen Saturation, Handgrip Critical Force, and Recovery of Force in the Forearm Muscles.
Citrulline Malate has possible exercise performance enhancement abilities due to the vasodilatory effect of nitric oxide produced from citrulline combined with a possible increase in mitochondrial efficiency from malate. However, the latter mechanism is unclear and has not been studied in conjunction with an aerobic performance test. Additionally, there has been a lack of studying how a large enough dose with proper pharmacokinetic timing from consumption to exercise affects these measures. PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate how an acute, 12g dose of citrulline malate affects mitochondrial function, oxygen saturation, and performance of a handgrip critical force test in the forearm muscles. METHODS: Seventeen participants (all women aged 18-35 years) completed three visits consisting of one familiarization and two experimental. This study utilized a randomized, double-blind, crossover design where participants drank either a citrulline malate or placebo solution, underwent a one-hour rest period, completed the mitochondrial function test, and then performed the handgrip critical force test followed by four recovery contractions. Mitochondrial function (time constant tau values), oxygen saturation and desaturation during the handgrip test (measured using infrared spectroscopy), and critical force variables were measured and compared between the supplement and placebo days. RESULTS: No statistical differences for mitochondrial function, maximal strength, critical force, force-time integral, areas-under the curve for oxy- and deoxy-hemoglobin, hemoglobin difference, and tissue saturation index were found. Additionally, there was no significant difference between the rate of recovery of force (p > 0.05). While there were no significant differences between conditions for the 20-second, time-binned averages of oxy/deoxy-hemoglobin, hemoglobin difference, and tissue saturation index during the handgrip critical force test (p > 0.05), there were significant main effects for time for all four of these variables (p < 0.001). CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, an acute, 12g dose of citrulline malate had no influence on mitochondrial function, oxygen saturation or desaturation, or performance of a handgrip critical force test. Future studies should investigate other mechanisms involved with this supplement, how or if citrulline malate affects electrically stimulated critical torque, or how other nitric oxide-producing supplements (like beet-root juice) affect mitochondrial function or aerobic performance. A larger sample size should also be included in future studies

This study analyzes the presence and function of the mythical figure of the amazon in the New World. Reading the testimonies of the European explorers through theories that examine the power of fear, the concept of social monsters, the mythification of women throughout history, and the construction of woman as the Other, we will show how certain explorers retold and reconstructed the image of indigenous women of the New World. The transformation of indigenous women into the amazon of the new region will be presented through the analysis of various texts from Christopher Columbus, Amerigo Vespucci, Gonzalo de Fernández de Oviedo y Valdés, Nuño de Guzmán, Gonzalo López, Juan Sámano, Pedro de Carranza, García del Pilar, Cristóbal Flores, Francisco de Arceo, an anonymous writer, and friar Gaspar de Carvajal
