    The importance of quality family time on child development

    Minimal research has been done to date on how family time and children's activities impact a child's development. The amount of quality time that families spend together has decreased in recent years and children have fallen behind in different developmental areas. This idea prompts the question if there is a correlation between how children spend their time and the child's developmental state. A longitudinal study uncovered that how a mother spends time impacts her child's behavior and academics. This study found a positive link between maternal education levels and the child's academic success as well as increased time spent with the mother, the child displayed less "delinquent behaviors" (Milkie et al., 2015). Another study aimed to discover how COVID-19 impacted a child's behavior, speech and language. This study found that children with disadvantaged backgrounds fell behind on their social skills (Ofsted, 2020). The results displayed that about � of the participants thought that these areas had improved with families spending more time talking and reading together. Hofferth & Sandberg (2001) reported on how family factors impacted the child's behaviors and cognitive abilities. The results indicated that child's activities as well as demographics played a role in family activities which influenced the child's development. This correlational study aims to further investigate how family time may impact a child's development. The online survey allowed participants to answer questions about demographics, how the child spent time, how parents spent time with their child, and the child's behavior and academic abilities. Findings suggest that how a child spends their time, impacts their behavior and academic achievements. Race, parental education, time spent eating, reading for pleasure, and family time all had impacted the child's behavior or their academic abilities. Some of these findings have consistencies with past research to suggest that family time is important for a child. For example, children who read for pleasure scored higher on achievement tests. Results also suggest that the amount of time spent engaged in family activities decreased behavioral issues in the child. With the limited number of participants in the current study, future research should aim to expand their number of participants. Interviewing participants may also result in consistent interpretation of all survey questions. In addition, future researchers may analyze the activities studied to determine if new activities should be addressed

    Stochastic Methods for Slip Detection in a Sheared Granular System

    We develop a flexible methodology for predicting slip events in a sheared granular system. The considered system consists of two-dimensional soft disks between two rigid horizontal walls, where the top wall is exposed to downward pressure and horizontal elastic shearing force, resulting in intermittent stick-slip regimes. The prediction methodology first uses topological data analysis to compute the persistent homology between successive force networks of the system and then quantifies the topological change by placing a metric between the respective persistence diagrams, resulting in a time series. Next, we construct a Bayesian stochastic state space model, which describes the behavior of the time series during the stick regime. We also create similar models for the stick regime behavior of the time series of more traditional measures on the granular system. A model identifies departure from the stick regime by detecting when the predictive error exceeds a specified threshold. The resulting detections demonstrate that this approach can detect the slip events in advance, with further investigation revealing a rough sequence of events. First, a local change appears in the force network and either dissipates or spreads globally. Next, the global change either triggers a slip event or a much smaller ‘micro-slip,’ depending on if its magnitude exceeds a critical threshold

    Policy in Action: A Multidimensional Study of the Oklahoma's Promise Scholarship Program

    This dissertation offers a multidimensional examination of the Oklahoma’s Promise scholarship, an early commitment financial aid program aimed at improving college access for Oklahoma students. Oklahoma’s Promise, which commits to covering the cost of tuition at in-state colleges and universities, requires students to sign up between the 8th and 10th grades, contingent upon meeting certain eligibility criteria. The dissertation is divided into two essays, each shedding light on critical aspects of program access and implementation. The first essay investigates factors influencing the timing of enrollment in Oklahoma’s Promise. Framed by Perna’s (2006) conceptual model of college choice, this analysis relies on a robust administrative dataset (n=46,824) and descriptive statistics to examine individual-, school- and district-level factors associated with timing of enrollment in the scholarship program. Findings indicate socioeconomic differences in timing of enrollment in Oklahoma’s Promise and reveal that individual and family variables may exert more profound influence on timing of enrollment than school-level or district-level characteristics. This essay contributes to a deeper understanding of the interplay between personal and institutional factors in shaping the development of college predisposition. The second essay investigates administrative burdens within the Oklahoma’s Promise program. Framed by previous research on administrative burdens, street-level bureaucracy, and bureaucratic discretion, this section uses grounded theory methods to analyze open-ended survey responses (n=298) and semi-structured interviews (n=6). Key findings underscore that students must overcome multiple administrative burdens in the form of learning, psychological and compliance costs in their pursuit of the scholarship. Moreover, counselors and other school personnel assume diverse roles in program implementation, spanning information dissemination, compliance enforcement, and advocacy on behalf of students. Notably, findings also highlight the influential role of bureaucratic discretion wielded by counselors to either promote or inhibit access to the scholarship. Ultimately, findings hold significant implications for policymakers, educators, and stakeholders focused on enhancing educational access and equity.     Oklahoma and World War I: Over Here and Over There

    The State of Oklahoma, one of the United States’ newest states, entered the First World War, along with the rest of the nation in April 1917. This study elucidates the role of Oklahoma’s participation in the United States Army during the period of World War I. From the already established Oklahoma National Guard unit, the Oklahoma 1st Infantry Regiment, derived from the former Oklahoma Territorial Army, to the thousands of Oklahoman draftees blended into the 90th Infantry Division in the National Army, Oklahoma sent over 90,000 men to fight overseas. This thesis explicates the role of Oklahoma’s citizens’ participation to provide the materials and services needed for the U.S. Army to operate, thereby supporting the Oklahoma doughboys. Drawing on several manuscript collections at the Western History Collections of the University of Oklahoma, the Fort Sill Archives located in Fort Sill, Oklahoma, local Oklahoma newspapers, and other state newspapers and materials from the Oklahoma Historical Society, this study argues that World War I was a foundational moment in Oklahoma’s early history. After the war, Oklahoma expanded its National Guard size by increasing its size to thousands instead of hundreds, and the military presence increased as the state allowed the construction of new installations. Almost five percent of Oklahoma’s population joined the armed services during the war, but the post-war integration experience of the military did not improve the racial-climate state

    Social desirability and self-reported levels of stigma among mental health providers as it relates to people with schizophrenia

    This study explores the relationship between levels of mental health stigma in mental health providers, and how they compare to the general population. In this literature mental health stigma is explored through the lens of neuroscience, cognitive psychology, and the Mental Illness Stigma Framework (MISF). The participants in this study were divided into two dichotomous groups: general population and mental health providers. Two driving variables, levels of stigma and social desirability, were explored and compared between populations. The results of analysis demonstrated the difference in level of mental health stigma between both populations were not statistically significant. While level of social desirability was positively correlated, and elevated, in the mental health provider population with statistical significance as compared to the general population

    “I don’t smell chemicals, I smell money:” the effects of federal policy and the chemical industry on human health and the environment in the Kanawha River Valley

    Federal policy and the need for American produced chemicals saw a need for a domestic chemical industry to be erected in the Kanawha Valley of West Virginia during World War I. Following the war, federal policy continued supporting the chemical industry and throughout the Interwar Period and World War II Union Carbide, DuPont, and Monsanto constructed chemical plants in the valley. The chemical industry continued growing in the valley despite the rise of the environmental movement following World War II, and during the second half the twentieth century residents of the Kanawha Valley formed conflicting opinions regarding the benefits of the industry in the area. Accordingly, this thesis studies the means by which federal policy supported the chemical industry and, in turn, the industry negatively impacted human health and the environment

    Optimization of red brick dust-based geopolymers for use in sustainable construction

    With the rising carbon dioxide levels affecting climate change, sustainable and eco-friendly alternatives to ordinary portland cement (OPC) are being investigated. To reduce the overall environmental impact, industrial waste products, such as fly ash and silica fume, have been used as partial substitutions for OPC in modern concrete mix designs. Other waste products can be used as replacements, and one such waste product is red brick dust (RBD). This research seeks to repurpose processed RBD through the utilization of geopolymerization processes. Geopolymerization utilizes alkali activators, which cause the low-reactive RBD to interact more readily with its constituent parts to form a strong geopolymer base. Ground limestone, calcium hydroxide, and alumina were chosen and added to facilitate a stronger geopolymer reaction from the aluminosilicate. An extensive literature review was performed to understand the underlying principles and establish target ratios for the molar values of components. These target ratios were calculated based on the quantities of raw materials and alkali activators after converting to moles of calcium, silica, or alumina. Afterwards, each component was weighed based on content requirements, followed by modifications to the RBD geopolymer mixture using substitution by weight percent of RBD. Multiple mix designs were used, along with ambient and oven curing methods, to determine an optimized region in which RBD geopolymers showed the highest compressive strength. Uniaxial compressive testing and calorimetry reports allowed for the identification of strength properties and gel phases, respectively. Once the data was analyzed for the 2”x2” mortar cubes, the initial approach of Ancient Roman concrete mimicry changed to hybrid gel formation for the 3”x6” cylinder series. Compressive strength results were overlayed onto ternary diagrams, and a maximum compressive strength zone was identified. Seven-day ambient-cured, 28-day ambient-cured, and oven-cured compressive strengths were analyzed against ACI codes to establish compressive strength limits and achieve the goal of this research: to find a sustainable alternative to OPC with improved or similar material characteristics through the optimization of low-reactive aluminosilicates and geopolymerization techniques

    SynthesAIzing Discoveries: Emerging tools for next-level research instruction

    Generative AI tools like ChatGPT are new and exciting, evoking buzz and triggering anxiety. What about less-known AI tools that synthesize information, tools with transformative potential for how we teach info and research skills? We approached an expert with our timely question: What do we need to know about how AI empowers research and sharpens information literacy skills? Our expert—an AI tool called Perplexity—responded by asserting that ChatGPT and other generative AI tools are “neither inherently good nor bad when it comes to finding and using information. Instead, they represent a new way in which we can interact with information.” Perplexity then centered the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy (2016), reminding us of the importance of understanding scholarship as an ongoing conversation; this, for us, begs a looming question: looming question: How do we meaningfully engage AI—and teach others to engage AI—as a conversation partner for next-level research? At the COIL Annual Conference, Michael Hanegan and Chris Rosser will introduce hearers to the potential of synthesizing AI tools like Perplexity for empowering learning and research, emerging tools that will profoundly inform new approaches to information literacy instruction. Our AIm is to equip instructors with tools and tactics for engaging synthesizing AI as a next-level partner for leveling up research.N
