    EVALUATION OF HOLLOW-CORE-FRP-CONCRETE-STEEL COLUMN AND FOOTING CONNECTION

    Accelerated bridge construction (ABC) has recently gained popularity among state departments of transportation to minimize construction costs, time and waste, and optimize the use of materials. This research focused on the connection details between hollow-core fiber-reinforced polymer concrete-steel columns (HC-FCS) and their foundations. The column consists of a concrete core sandwiched between an outer fiber-reinforced polymer (FRP) tube and an inner steel tube. Two foundation anchorage details were tested with multiple embedment lengths into the footing to evaluate the connection's capability to transfer axial load and bending moment and achieve the ultimate column flexural and shear capacities. Seven column-footing specimens were cast and tested to failure to study the effect of embedment length, diameter-to-thickness ratio, compressive strength of the concrete footing, and end-of-column anchorage on monolithically cast connection capacity. Two specimens utilizing a socketed connection filled with ultra-high performance concrete (UHPC) designed to represent connection of precast elements were cast and tested to failure. The specimens were designed to be tested as a simply supported beam using a typical load frame by constructing each 2 ft by 2 ft by 4 ft-1 in. footing with a column portion embedded at the desired embedment length at each end of the footing. The column portion of the specimen was in the form of only a steel tube. An 8.625 in. diameter steel pipe with a thickness of 0.219 in. was used for eight specimens, while a 6.625 in. diameter steel pipe with a thickness of 0.25 in. was used for one specimen. Embedment length had a significant effect on the performance of the column-footing connection. The short embedment lengths tested (1.6Di and 1.68Di) were not sufficient to develop the steel pipe flexural strength for the monolithic connection specimens with a normal-strength concrete footing. However, the use of socketed connection with UHPC, high-strength concrete footing, and welding a series of lugs to the embedded pipe prevented the steel pipe from pulling out to some extent, and local buckling occurred in the steel pipe at a moment greater than the calculated capacity of the steel pipe with an embedment length of 1.6Di. The 1.8Di embedment length prevented the steel pipe from pulling out whether using the socketed connection with UHPC, high-strength concrete, or normal-strength concrete. The specimens with this longer embedment length failed after exceeding the flexural strength of the steel pipe, and local buckling occurred in the steel pipe. This suggests that the column-footing connection with a 1.8Di embedment length is potentially sufficient to achieve the flexural strength capacity of the steel pipe

    HOW GAY AND LESBIAN EDUCATORS POSITION THEMSELVES IDEOLOGICALLY IN THE CLASSROOM

    In this study, I aim to better understand the ideological positioning of gay and lesbian educators in the classroom setting. Through conducting a qualitative study, I interviewed three teachers who identify as gay or lesbian. They were asked a series of questions in an environment in which they felt the most comfortable. These questions ranged from topics about their sexuality to classroom management. Each interview took approximately thirty to ninety minutes and was then transcribed for data purposes. Looking at the lives of LGBTQ+ educators, the political atmosphere, and the history of LGBTQ+ teachers, the literature contextualizes the current issue. Using a teacher identity framework, the research answered the question as to the ideological positioning of gay and lesbian educators within a classroom context. The findings of this study show that the three gay or lesbian educators that were interviewed took neutral positions when it came to their ideological positioning. This study reflects the need for better policies in the LGBTQ+ community at the national level, pre-service teacher training, and better professional development opportunities in school districts

    Fire management and risk perception through an organizational lens

    Acting as a relentless flame, increasing wildfire risk has left a scorched trail of devastation across the globe. Based on the most recent National Climate Assessment, this threat is only projected to climb as climate change increases the prevalence of warm temperatures and dry conditions (USGCRP, 2023). In response to fuel and land management changes, human activity, and climate change, the amount of acreage burned by high-severity wildfires in the West has increased eightfold since 1985. Not unique to the West, 16 megafires also blazed across the landscape of the Southern Great Plains between 2000 and 2018 (USGCRP, 2023). By February of 2024, that same region experienced the largest wildfire in contiguous U.S. history, having burned over one million acres across the Texas Panhandle and into far western Oklahoma, resulting in a major loss of livestock, infrastructure, and life (Henson, 2024). Responding to such events and managing the potential for future catastrophic wildfire events are fire managers at various organizational levels. Fire management organizations operate within their own unique decision-making processes, informed by their perception of wildfire risk. To better address the looming threat of wildfires, researchers, funding agencies, fire managers, and stakeholders need to understand how fire managers make decisions, what pressures and challenges influence their decisions, and how they perceive climate change and wildfire risk. To answer these questions among the different organizational levels, I surveyed federal, state, and regional fire managers (FSR) across the United States and conducted five focus groups with local fire managers throughout Oklahoma. The robust amount of data that was gathered, coded, and analyzed, provides extensive insights that are compared across organizational levels. Among the key findings are acknowledgement by fire managers at all organizational levels that wildfire risk and its severity are increasing, and that experience and trust play a significant role in shaping those risk perceptions. When relating risk to climate change, there were different levels of acceptance and concern, with more recognition at the FSR level than the local level. Impacts and challenges associated with fuel and land management, human activity, the wildland-urban interface, and population growth were thought to be the primary causes and challenges associated with wildfire risk. In addition, among the most influential decision-making pressures were staffing and funding for FSR managers, and public and landowner perception and influence at the local level. Given staffing and funding limitations, there is a lack of climate change consideration in long-term planning, general planning processes, and related policy at all fire management levels. To address ongoing challenges and pressures, staffing and funding need to be stabilized, and there needs to be a strong push in public communication and education on wildfire risk and fuel and land management. These results provide a better understanding of what shapes and influences risk perception and decision-making across federal, state, regional, and local fire management levels. Such insights can inform and help prioritize areas of focus within organizations to improve organizational function and processes in response to the wildfire threat. In addition, the results underscore knowledge gaps that can be better connected between researchers, fire managers, and funding sources, as well as between fire managers and the public. While ample room exists for additional research on the various factors and nuances of fire management risk perception, as well as policy development and implementation, this research establishes a strong foundation and starting point

    An Analysis on Luis Humberto Salgado's Works for Cello and Piano

    Luis Humberto Salgado was an Ecuadorian pianist and composer who wrote in a variety of instrumental settings, including two works for cello and piano. Although he composed the Caprice and Sonata for Cello and Piano over sixty years ago, these works have only just begun to take their place of prominence in the cello literature due to recent performances and the distribution of engraved editions. Research on Salgado’s life and some of his music is available; nevertheless, no documents have been released on his Caprice, and limited information can be found on the Sonata. This document analyzes several aspects of these works from a performer’s perspective. The research includes information on the composer’s life, music, and style; a harmonic and formal overview on both the Caprice and Sonata; a review of their difficulty level, considering some complicated components; and recommendations on overcoming said difficulties. The analytical findings regarding Salgado’s compositions for cello and piano reveal the use of 20th century techniques as a stylistic basis for both compositions. The difficulty of the pieces requires proficiency in the instrument and musical maturity. Cello instructors and performers can consider these works a part of the repertoire, as they explore many challenges that instrumentalists typically encounter in the learning process.     Unveiling Hidden Stories: Interactive Digital Humanities Resources Empower Research on Underrepresented Communities

    In three case studies, we show how the transformation from a static bibliography to an interactive digital humanities resource connects student researchers to the cultural heritage of often overlooked communities, including Indigenous artists and Indigenous architects and architecture. In addition to modernizing pre-existing metadata on Indigenous artists and the built environment of Oklahoma, we created an entirely new bibliography dedicated to the under-represented field of Indigenous Architecture of Oklahoma. These case studies show how unearthing and enhancing existing resources can help researchers develop new narratives about the history and culture of Oklahoma.N

    Network Science Applications in Industrial Organization

    In recent years, CryptoArt prices have surged to levels typically associated with renowned artists' works, a phenomenon both puzzling and understudied. The first chapter investigates how trading networks and platform connections influence prices in the digital art marketplace hosted on the Foundation platform. We find that larger seller trading networks lead to higher auction prices for lower priced digital art, while platform connections play a critical role, especially for the most expensive pieces. Our research underscores that in decentralized online markets, the power to set prices rests with trading networks and platform connections, with differential impact across the distribution of prices. In the second chapter, we examine the dynamics of repeated NFT auctions on the Foundation platform, focusing on how buyer and seller reputation and experience—measured by the number of followers and Katz centrality—impact resale prices. Our findings reveal that the popularity of sellers in primary sales who is also the creator of digital art positively influences both resale prices and the likelihood of resale. The trading experience of buyers raises relative prices but negatively affects the likelihood of trade in matched samples. Extensive trading networks among buyers show varied effects on resale dynamics, demonstrating cautious consideration of opportunities to buy but aggressive bidding behavior when they do. This study provides valuable insights into the evolving digital art market, highlighting factors that drive resale likelihood and prices, and contributing to a deeper understanding of digital asset markets and their parallels with the traditional art market. In the third chapter, We investigate the route network decisions made by airline carriers in the United States, considering both direct and indirect flights and the interdependencies of the markets. Our modeling approach allows us to analyze airlines' decisions regarding their entire route networks, rather than focusing solely on individual market choices. We estimate the likelihood of selecting a route network based on the past network, competitors' networks, and route characteristics. We find that routes facilitating greater opportunities for indirect flights are more likely to be served by airlines, and competition increases the likelihood of serving a route

    Discovering Accessible Data Visualizations for People with ADHD

    There have been many studies on understanding effective data visualizations regarding general users. However, we have a limited understanding on how people with ADHD comprehend data visualizations and how it might differ from the general users. To understand accessible data visualization for people with ADHD, we conducted a crowd-sourced survey involving 70 participants with ADHD and 77 participants without ADHD. Specifically, we tested the chart components of color, text amount, and use of visual embellishments/pictographs, finding that some of these components and ADHD affected participants’ response times and accuracy. We outlined the neurological traits of ADHD and discussed specific findings on accessible data visualizations for people with ADHD. For example, we found that various chart embellishment types affected accuracy and response times for those with ADHD differently depending on the types of questions asked. Based on these results, we suggested visual design recommendations to make more accessible data visualizations for people with ADHD

    CONTEMPORARY DROUGHT MONITORING WITH THE STANDARDIZED PRECIPITATION INDEX: EVALUATING THE EFFECT OF NONSTATIONARY PRECIPITATION REGIMES IN THE CONTIGUOUS UNITED STATES ON THE CHARACTERIZATION OF DROUGHT

    This dissertation examines the impact of shifting climatic conditions on the accuracy and reliability of drought characterization in the contiguous United States using the Standardized Precipitation Index (SPI). Each chapter employs climate divisional precipitation data from the U.S. Climate Divisional Database to investigate the dynamics of drought and pluvial events using various 30- to 60-year climatological reference periods. Chapter 2 investigates discrepancies found in NOAA's Climate Divisional SPI Dataset, revealing significant over- and underestimations of drought frequency, suggesting the presence of bias towards drought or pluvial conditions in certain regions. Chapter 3 explores how the choice of climatological reference period influences the SPI's characterization of drought and pluvial occurrence and severity, highlighting the sensitivity of drought indices to their underlying climatological reference periods. Chapter 4 expands on the operational drought monitoring implications of transitioning between reference periods with differing precipitation regimes. Through comprehensive analyses and comparisons against various climatological reference periods, this dissertation uncovers critical insights into the SPI's performance and its dependence on precipitation regimes. The results of this dissertation emphasize the need for adaptive strategies in drought monitoring against the backdrop of a changing climate

    When more is less: the adverse effect of financial reporting complexity on accounting comparability

    I investigate the impact of complex financial statements on accounting comparability. I measure accounting reporting complexity with XBRL-based measures. I find that complex financial statements reduce financial statement comparability. In addition, custom XBRL tags incrementally reduce financial statement comparability. I utilize staggered adoption of inline XBRL reporting to address endogeneity issues. I also show that the usage of custom XBRL tags is linked to data vendors’ processing difficulties as evidenced by a higher frequency of missing key variables, and that complex financial information is driving investors to adopt automated trading strategies to follow traders who have the capacity to process complicated financial information. The collective results suggest that the financial statement customization permitted by the XBRL reporting scheme may inadvertently lead to difficulties comparing firms. This study, therefore, underscores the potential consequences of complex financial reporting and provides insights into how accounting practices and regulatory frameworks can influence financial statement comparability
