Abraham Lincoln and the arts: creation of a leader
Works of art illuminate our lives. They are vital to human experience and assist leadership development. I demonstrate research that reveals a relationship between the arts and leadership. The arts played a role in Lincoln’s ability to lead the country through the cataclysm of the American Civil War. Culture surrounded Lincoln’s life’s journey. This thesis examines the life of Abraham Lincoln, researches the arts he experienced, and his growth as a leader. It examines art’s potential to foster leadership qualities and explores the arts that permeated his life. We can learn from the culture that surrounded Abraham Lincoln. The examination and analysis of the association between art and leadership adds to evidence of the role the arts play in human experience: mentally, physically, and spiritually. I use a mixed methodology of analytical and qualitative research, studying primary resources of Lincoln’s original work, his correspondence, private conversations, memos, speeches, as well as his published poetry, letters, and statements. I study his leadership development through the eyes of those who knew him. I examine oral histories, journals, diaries, and first-hand observations of Abraham Lincoln’s friends, relatives, and colleagues. I examine the works and papers of friends, members of his cabinet, secretaries, law partners, and fellow politicians. I examine the literature, performing arts, and visual arts that encompassed Abraham Lincoln. I read the prose Lincoln read, recite the poetry Lincoln spoke, and listen to the music that enveloped his ears, to experience the arts as he experienced them. This study finds evidence that art in Lincoln’s life was a significant component to his leadership growth and assisted in his overall well-being. The arts are integrated in his achievements, concepts, and constitution. The arts acted as a support mechanism to help him mentally survive bitter losses, persevere despite poverty, abuse, poor physical and mental health, and nourished his daunting journey to become a profound intellectual, astute litigator, political animal, and arguably the most consequential president in our nation’s history. Culture is consequential and has the power to transform lives. This study expands scholarship on Lincoln’s leadership abilities, as well as leadership itself. Future studies on historically strong leaders and the arts they experienced would further this field of research
Evaluation of Low-Cost GNSS-RTK Solution for the Future Truth Position Sensors Supporting Radar and Autonomous Platforms Tests
High-accuracy GNSS-based localization solutions have historically been verycost-prohibitive, typically ranging into the tens of thousands of dollars. However, companies such as U-Blox have recently begun creating high-accuracy RTK solutions for just under $200 USD. The goal of this research is to assess the precision, accuracy, and reliability of the low-cost ZED-F9P receiver in a dynamic state, with a focus on altitude, for potential use in a portable GNSSaugmentation system that supports Unmanned Aerial System (UAS) operations. The ZED-F9P family of receivers claims a horizontal position accuracy of 0.01 m + 1 ppm Circular Error Probability (CEP), which means that 50% of the received positions will be within a circle of 1 cm radius, whose center is on the true position, and whose radius increases by 1mm for every Kilometer of distance between the rover and base station receivers. Its horizontal position accuracy and low price point make it attractive for use in advanced autonomous systems with high accuracy requirements. For ground based systems this may be sufficient, however the datasheet does not specify the vertical positional accuracy, which is problematic for aerial based platforms. This study intends to fill the gap by comparing the ZED-F9P system and the more mature and certified Ashtech Differential GPS (DGPS) system. The Basic theories and principles of using ZED-F9P as an RTK solution, the specific example system deployment, and the performance of a supporting UAS-based truth positioning system are tested and presented
Cultivating Environmental Connection and Deeper Learning through Field Trips to Outdoor Learning Spaces: A Qualitative Analysis
Policymakers, scholars, and educators are concerned about youth well-being and the rise of chronic absenteeism, suggesting student disengagement from learning in school coupled with the rise of standardization practices. Researchers have studied the general benefits of outdoor learning spaces for increased student engagement and improved overall well-being. However, a gap remains in our understanding of how a specifically designed outdoor learning space, incorporating both natural elements and planned activities, can foster environmental connection and deeper learning for students, as there is limited research on outdoor learning field trips. This study employed a case study methodology to investigates how student learning experiences emerged during educational field trips to an outdoor learning space and what structures and planned activities are present at the outdoor learning space, utilizing a place-based education framework. Data includes observations of two elementary school field trips, post field trip surveys, and organizational documents. The findings indicate that the field trips not only fostered students' emotional and cognitive engagement with their environment through expressions of awe and wonder but also facilitated a deeper understanding of ecological concepts, highlighting the role of both deeper learning and supportive structures within the Outdoor Learning Space. This research advances the literature by examining student engagement, environmental connection, and potential non-cognitive outcomes like "Sense of Place" development and parental engagement within a designed OLS (Outdoor Learning Space) context
On the Design of Unmanned Aerial Weather Measurement Systems for Wintry Precipitation Observations
Weakly forced winter weather precipitation events within the atmospheric boundary layer can lead to considerable negative economic impacts. Due to their proximity to the ground and varying range of particle sizes, some of these precipitation phenomena are not well captured by current observation systems (e.g., radiosondes, ground and space-based radars, and automated surface observations). In aerial transportation, undetected low-altitude freezing rain and drizzle can produce almost invisible hazards with potentially catastrophic consequences for aircraft within low altitudes (e.g., the terminal area). However, the lack of direct observations of the low-altitude freezing precipitation environment creates a challenge for forecasters, flight crews, dispatchers, and air traffic controllers. This challenge is further exacerbated by the integration of autonomous aircraft (i.e., sUAS and AAM) into the national airspace system, which will necessitate the availability of this currently missing information at higher spatial and temporal resolutions. To address this need, this dissertation endeavors to develop a novel unmanned aerial weather measurement system (WxUAS) to complement the current observation systems and provide insight into the mechanisms that govern low-altitude wintry precipitation. Such insight is achieved through a multi-modal data fusion algorithm that leverages novel WxUAS-base techniques for in-situ measurements in active precipitation and airborne radar measurements to produce an automated present weather inference aimed at detecting and locating freezing and melting layers, cloud and cloud-transition layers, as well as precipitation type and intensity. Validation for these novel techniques is presented through an intercomparison study with NASA instruments
An Analysis of Three Selections from Isadore Freed's Six Liturgical Pieces
Belarusian-American composer Isadore Freed (1900–1960) was active during his professional career in the Paris (France), New York, and Philadephia areas, and published many significant works for concert stage and Synagogue. He is secondarily known for his work as an organist, an instructor of organ, and a composer for the instrument. As an educator, most critics agree that his most important book was Harmonizing the Jewish Modes (1958) in which Freed aimed to inform cantorial students of the unique rules of harmony surrounding the use of the Jewish modes in compositions and cantillations. His harmony treatise and ideas directly affect his compositional style in his organ pieces. In this document, I will include a brief biography of the composer, discuss the scholarship on the Jewish modes prior to Freed’s treatise, summarize Freed’s contributions to scholarship on the Jewish modes, and analyze three of Freed’s Six Liturgical Pieces (1952) for solo organ– Pastorale, Invocation, and The Lord of All– through the lens of his own deeply-ingrained musical language, cultural heritage, and theoretical ideas
Women, Gender and Sexuality: Dynamics of Recognition, Resistance and Resilience in Emerging Economies
This paper explores the intricate dynamics of recognition, resistance, and resilience concerning women, gender, and sexuality in emerging economies. In these societies, traditional norms often collide with modernizing forces, creating unique challenges and opportunities for gender equity and sexual rights. We delve into the complexities of how women and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, (LGBTQ+) communities navigate socio-economic landscapes marked by rapid change, structural inequalities, and persistent patriarchal attitudes. Through an examination of recent literature and case studies, this paper highlights the innovative ways in which these communities seek recognition, resist oppression, and demonstrate resilience amidst evolving economic contexts. We make use of questionnaire and survey to get data. Recommendations are the need for global public policy, legislation for LGBTQ+ in Africa and stop stigmatisation again this group of people
STLR Rubric Level Descriptions
The Student Transformative Learning Record (STLR) program assesses student transformative growth within each of five tenets at the levels of Transformation, Integration, Exposure, and Not Achieved. This rubric is used during training of campus-wide faculty and staff on STLR to calibrate assessments to a standard, and then it is used as the basis of those assessors evaluation of student learning artifacts to assign them a STLR credit level

LGBTQ+ self-discovery beyond 40 challenges ageist assumptions and represents a growing demographic. This research matters because it:
1. Validates diverse life paths and timelines for self-discovery
2. Addresses unique needs of midlife/older LGBTQ+ individuals
3. Informs inclusive policies and support systems
4. Encourages authenticity at any age, promoting mental health and well-being
By exploring this topic, we expand our understanding of identity formation and support a more inclusive society for all ages
