    Remembering the Dead: Applying Museum Collections Research to Historic Lone Mountain Cemetery

    Cemeteries act as outdoor museums due to the similarities between collections and grave markers, allowing for historical, cultural, and artistic context to be learned from objects. A case study at Lone Mountain Cemetery, this thesis will apply collections research practices to the grave markers through the art depicted on them, in order to provide insight into the issues surrounding the erasure and preservation of grave markers. When a person dies, their identity is displayed on their grave marker through symbols, written epitaphs, and also the materials used. Modern people interact with these identities when they visit a grave, identifying with the deceased, reflecting on them, or by acting out rituals of defiance. Cemeteries function parallel to that of museums, serving as places of education and recreation. Cultures change throughout time, but cemeteries allow people to step back and observe the differences and similarities between past cultures and the present

    Multi-Material Extrusion Based Additive Manufacturing of Flexible Polymetric Materials

    Direct ink writing (DIW) is a 3D printing technique, capable of printing many different polymers that cannot be 3D printed using other methods. Previous DIW attempts at the University of Oklahoma using a modified Ender 3 printer, to pneumatically print material, focused on printing a carbon nanotube mixture into a silicon resin print bath. Attempts to replicate this process proved successful while simultaneously increasing familiarization with the process. Using direct ink writing material extrusion, a two-material circular nozzle designed to print multiple materials simultaneously was designed, analyzed, and tested at the University of Oklahoma. Additionally, conceptual designs for other nozzles to print from two to five materials at once were also created. A Photon Mono M5s resin printer could create the desired geometry of the nozzle. Provided that the filament utilized was capable of being 3D printed, with a high enough viscosity and shear-thinning properties, the nozzle could create complex two-dimensional geometry. This complex geometry utilized print times of almost 10 minutes with no adjustments to printing pressure necessary mid-print. Additionally, material extrusion could be stopped and restarted with no issues. Future efforts could serve to test out the mechanical properties of pneumatically extruded materials in comparison to the material properties, while also creating three-dimensional geometry or testing different materials in each side of the nozzle

    AUTHORIAL CUSTODY AND STORY STEWARDSHIP: CENTERING RELATIONALITY AS AN INDIGENOUS APPROACH TO TEXTS

    This dissertation looks to position authorial custody and story stewardship as useful tools for author, audience, and critic. As a critical creative methodology, it can be used to identify custodial markers indicating the level of ownership an author or audience has of a story, which allows for the meaning-making apparatus to be engaged in an ethically informed way such that anyone applying it to a work can function as ethical stewards of stories. The custody of a text is broadly categorized as either personal, communal, or collaborative, and each has its subsequent set of instructions regarding the stewardship moving forward with the text. Applying the methodology across three Muscogee authors’ works, it becomes clear that: -Authorial custody is determinable -Story stewardship is invitational -Tribally specific critique can generate broadly applicable outcomes Furthermore, it becomes clear that the reclamation of colonized images from settler colonial custody is not only a possible outcome of literary analysis and critique, but a necessary one informed by the intentional work of artists and authors in marginalized communities. Ultimately, the methodology proves useful for authors and audiences alike, and can be leveraged as both a tool and an outcome in and of itself

    EXPLORING BEAMFORMING TECHNIQUES FOR mmWAVE SCANNING ANTENNAS

    Radar and communication systems greatly benefit from having a highly directive antenna, with a narrow beamwidth. Previous studies have been performed on multiple techniques to obtain a reduced beamwidth, and the aim of this present work will be placed on exploring two of them. The first one is dielectric lenses, which consists of a dielectric structure placed outside of the antenna, which collimates the trasmitted radiation forward, as a planar wave. The second technique is virtual arrays, which allows a radiation pattern with a reduced beamwidth to be obtained by modifying the spacing between the elements in the transmission and reception arrays. Work on dielectric lenses has been widely reported, ranging from the use of metamaterials that allow to achieve a dielectric constant close to zero, to the use of additive manufacturing with artificially engineered dielectrics to achieve the desired beamwidth reduction. However, a clear procedure to design lenses based on certain radiation parameters has not been explored yet. Furthermore, research performed on the optimization of antenna elements in arrays to reduce the beamwidth has also been done. Multiple techniques such as numerical optimizations and compressive sensing have been used, and a reduction between 20\% and 40\% have been obtained. Nonetheless, these techniques do not account for electronical beam steering, which is a main feature of antenna arrays. With that in mind, the objective of this thesis is to develop a methodical design procedure for both dielectric lenses and virtual arrays. In the case of lenses, the aim is to derive equations that allow for estimating their size and obtain a dielectric constant profile regardless of the desired shape. As for the virtual arrays they are explored in order to obtain the minimum achievable beamwidth with a certain number of elements, without compromising both the beam steering capabilities and amplitude tapering

    A comparative analysis of accuracy and sensitivity in semen presumptive testing: ABAcard P30™, RSID Semen™, and Seratec PSA™

    Semen presumptive tests are often used in forensics to detect the possible presence of semen on evidence from a crime scene. These tests work by identifying enzymes or proteins commonly found in semen, such as prostate-specific antigen (PSA) and semenogelin. However, presumptive tests can produce false positive results, as these biomarkers may also be present in other bodily fluids. Despite this limitation, some agencies still rely on presumptive test outcomes as a confirmation test for semen in legal proceedings. This study evaluated and compared the accuracy and sensitivity of three rapid immunochromatographic test kits for semen detection: Rapid Stain Identification Series (RSID) Semen™, Seratec PSA™, and ABAcard P30™. The RSID Semen™ test detects semenogelin, while Seratec PSA™ and ABAcard P30™ detect PSA. Samples tested included serial dilutions of semen, as well as an array of bodily fluids and materials that could potentially cause false positive results. All samples were tested in triplicate with each kit. The study found differences in sensitivity between the three test kits, with false positives occurring to some degree with all methods. RSID Semen™, Seratec PSA™, and ABAcard P30™ all had issues detecting semen in a 1:10,000 dilution. Additionally, RSID Semen™ could not detect semen when it was mixed with dirt. There was an issue of non-specificity with all three of the test kits with various absorbent hygiene products. RSID Semen™, Seratec PSA™, and ABAcard P30™ all had several false positive test results with tampons, menstrual pads with blood, and diapers with urine samples. Additionally, ABAcard P30™ had false positive test results with female urine samples. These findings highlight the need for caution when using presumptive semen test results, especially as primary evidence in legal cases. These test kits should no longer be used as a confirmatory test for semen in legal proceedings. The data generated will help forensics investigators determine which test kit may be most appropriate and reliable for detecting semen on different types of evidence, highlighting the potential for false results. Using precise testing methods is critical for drawing correct conclusions during criminal investigations. While Seratec PSA™ showed the highest sensitivity among the test kits evaluated, it had a concerning false positive rate of 12%, the highest rate observed. Of the three rapid semen detection kits compared, the ABAcard P30™ kit displayed the highest degree of accuracy. ABAcard P30™ had both the lowest false positive rate at 6% and the second-lowest false negative rate at 2% out of the kits tested, indicating superior sensitivity and specificity

    AI-integrated Work Environments and Job Crafting Towards Strengths, Interests, and Development: Considering The Role of Supervisor Support and AI Autonomy

    As organizations increasingly integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into their operations to drive success, understanding its impact on employees becomes paramount. Narrative reviews of the burgeoning literature (e.g., Acemoglu & Restrepo, 2017; Bankins & Formosa, 2023) suggest the adoption of AI technologies in the workplace can relieve employees from tedious tasks and foster new opportunities for employees to initiate proactive changes to their work, known as job crafting. However, the facilitating role of AI-integration on job crafting behaviors has yet to be empirically tested and it is unclear how employees are leveraging the new opportunities from AI-integration in the workplace. Taking into account perceived supervisor support and perceived AI autonomy as moderators, time-lagged survey data from 795 Prolific employees in retail, finance, and insurance sectors were collected to test hypotheses regarding how job crafting (JC) towards one’s strengths, interests, and development would be greater for employees working in AI-integrated work environments. I also tested moderation hypotheses concerning how the positive effects of AI-integration on crafting would be stronger for employees with greater supervisor support and AI autonomy. Moderated regression analyses showed that AI-integrated environments were positively associated with JC-strengths, interests, and development. Supervisor support and AI autonomy yielded positive main effects, but only AI autonomy moderated the effects of AI-integration on crafting. Specifically, with the exception of JC-strengths, the positive effects of AI-integration on JC-interests and development were stronger for employees who reported more AI autonomy. Insights for theory and practice are discussed regarding how to support employees so they can leverage AI-integration to enrich their work through job crafting, bringing greater value to their careers and organizations.     The effect of mental illness characteristics and diagnoses on juror sentencing decisions

    Stigmas surrounding mental illness in the criminal justice system often influence jurors' decisions, sometimes aggravating (increasing) and sometimes mitigating (decreasing) sentencing decisions. Jurors' own personal experiences with mental illness could be an underlying factor in sentencing a defendant. However, personal experiences of jurors still require much research to understand individual characteristics and environmental influences in their decision making. Thus, the purpose of the present study was to investigate how mental illness symptomology may influence perceived responsibility proposed sentencing of a criminal defendant. 214 participants read a fact pattern from a Supreme Court opinion involving homicide and rated the guilt and proposed sentencing of the defendant (who either received a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, whose symptoms were described, or no mental illness was involved). Participants also completed the Brief Symptom Inventory. Results indicated that there was no interaction between mental illness of the defendant and juror sentencing decisions; however, there was an interaction between juror symptomology and recommended sentence length of the defendant in years. Personal symptomology of jurors' is a predictor of recommended sentence length of a defendant, in years (p < .05). Implications for future research and for practical applications are discussed

    ALTERNATIVE PATHS, UNCONVENTIONAL STRENGTHS: THE INFLUENCE OF SELF-EFFICACY ON RETENTION RATES AMONG K-12 SPECIAL EDUCATORS IN THE STATE OF OKLAHOMA

    The purpose of this study was to evaluate the role that certification pathway may have on the retention and attrition rates in the field of education in regard to classroom teachers. Teacher shortages are continuing to be problematic in the field of special education and with the amount of alternative certification options increasing, this study looked at whether this phenomenon is being affected by the certification pathway of special educators. A survey design was created to and dispersed to special education teachers in the state of Oklahoma. A sequential mediation model was performed with self-efficacy and burnout as the mediators. The survey design yielded 191 participants. Results showed that certification pathway is not a statistically significant indicator on the intention to leave the field. Burnout was statistically significant to self-efficacy and job satisfaction. Future research should examine the self-efficacy and burnout with more attention paid to specific domains within each area

    Understanding and Securing Typing Privacy in Wireless Environments

    Sensitive numbers play an unparalleled role in identification and authentication. Recent research has revealed plenty of side-channel attacks to infer keystrokes. The common idea is that pressing a key of a keyboard can cause a unique and subtle environmental change, which can be captured and analyzed by the eavesdropper to learn the keystrokes. However, these attacks also require either a training phase or a dictionary to build the relationship between an observed signal disturbance and a keystroke. As acquiring the training data about the victim is often unpractical, this research develops a side-channel attack that does not require training procedures. This dissertation demonstrates that typing a number creates not only a number of observed disturbances in space (each corresponding to a digit), but also a sequence of periods between each disturbance. Based upon existing work that utilizes inter-keystroke timing to infer keystrokes, we build a novel technique that combines the spatial and time domain information into a spatiotemporal feature of keystroke-disturbed wireless signals. With this spatiotemporal feature, the proposed attack can infer typed numbers without the aid of any training. Experimental results on top of software-defined radio platforms show that this attack vastly reduces the guesses required for breaking certain 6-digit PINs from 1 million to as low as 16, and can infer over 52% of user-chosen 6-digit PINs with less than 100 attempts. This dissertation also discusses feasible countermeasures that can resist the proposed attack and evaluates them in real-world typing environments

    Sustaining Professional Growth with a Side-to-Side Pedagogy: A Qualitative Case Study of the National Writing Project Focused on Seven Teacher Consultants

    In a qualitative case study, this research focused on the professional growth of National Writing Project (NWP) Teacher Consultants (TCs). The overarching question, In what ways have experiences with the National Writing Project sustained the professional growth of NWP Teacher Consultants? guided an inquiry of seven TCs—teaching in grades three through university and representing seven sites from diverse regions—who had developed an Expressive Writing Pedagogy. Multiple interviews, videos, and artifacts allowed an extensive exploration of the conditions, contexts, supports, and challenges each experienced as they developed their classroom pedagogies and furthered their leadership over time. Findings included a rich description of the seven nested cases and a discussion of the following themes: a special kind of teacher, side-to-side pedagogy, authentic professional learning, conditions for success, and thriving in community
