    Get PDF
The goal of this study is to highlight the continued presence of Anglo-Israelism on the far-right. It also aims to underscore the various modern far-right actors which adhere to, and actively promote, Anglo-Israelite ideologies. The first chapter addresses the definition of anti-Judaism, and finds it the most suitable term for describing current forms of anti-Jewish hate in America. The Second chapter analyzes the origin and theology of Anglo-Israelism. The third chapter highlights modern proponents of Anglo-Israelism, their goals/motivation, and their recruitment techniques. The final chapter reviews findings and suggest a more aggressive approach to the implementation of holocaust education and critical race theory in American K-12 classrooms in order to curb the spread of far-right extremism

Helping preservice teachers understand dyslexia: a study on conceptual change and engagement with three text conditions

    Get PDF
Many states have passed laws mandating pre- and in-service teacher training in dyslexia; however, research suggests the majority of stakeholders continue to hold misconceptions about the definition, causes, identification, treatment, and how dyslexia relates to school-based factors. In this study, three groups of preservice teachers were assessed on their knowledge of dyslexia to determine baseline levels of scientific conceptions (SCs), misconceptions (MCs) and uncertainties (UCs). Next, participants were randomly assigned one of three texts explaining dyslexia (informational [IDA text], refutation text [RT], refutation text with graphics embedded [RT-EG]) to determine how conditions impacted their SCs, MCs, and UCs. After reading, participants were assessed on their knowledge of dyslexia, cognitive engagement during reading, and demographic data was collected. Results indicate significant levels of MCs among preservice teachers regarding (a) the type of treatment needed for students with dyslexia and (b) the MC of dyslexia as a visual disability needing visually-based treatments. After readings, all groups improved in their SCs of dyslexia; however, the RT and RT-EG groups increased SCs more than the IDA text. Only the RT and RT-EG texts decreased MCs statistically significantly with large effect sizes (RT p < .001, ηp2 = .50; RT-EG p < .001, ηp2 = .32). All texts decreased UCs; however, the RT and RT-EG conditions produced large effects. Implications for training and future research are discussed. Using refutation-based materials in dyslexia trainings has the potential to increase participant understanding of dyslexia more than informational trainings that do not refute common MCs

Relatos de resistencia: Crónicas venezolanas, crisis política y estado de excepción en Venezuela (1992-2021)

    Get PDF
During a deep crisis in a historical, political, and social context, the chronicles are published as mechanisms before a state of emergency in Venezuela can be included in the annals, as a close, direct, and plausible reference to the difficult dictatorial political system that the Venezuelans faced for many years. Read from another context, the writing of current Venezuelan chronicles transcends geographical margins and strengthens thought from exile. Therefore, Latin American writers, and especially Venezuelans, continue to assume the commitment to wield the stories that detail what happens in contemporary Venezuela. In this investigation, each chronicle is assumed to be historical and political writing in a state of exception

The Last Hope for African Methodism: Flipper-Key-Davis in the Age of Race Uplift

    Get PDF
In 1917, leaders of the African Methodist Episcopal Church founded Flipper-Key-Davis University in Tullahassee, Oklahoma. The university served as the only private Black educational institution within the state until 1936 when it officially closed. During its operation, Flipper-Key-Davis University was dedicated to uplifting the African American race through spiritual advancement and educational progression. As such, the university dealt with both external and internal pressures of race uplift that dominated early twentieth century African American discourse. While Langston University is the sole Historically Black College currently operating in the state of Oklahoma, there are several defunct institutions that were once dedicated to African American education in the state. This thesis focuses on Flipper-Key-Davis University, a defunct HBCU that once operated in Oklahoma, in the hopes of offering a more nuanced approach to examining twentieth century Black education and uplift rhetoric

A promise you can trust? a critical quantitative study on the politics of low-income college access

Promise programs are a growing trend across the US that offer college assistance to low-income students. Many of these programs develop under the premise of supporting low-income students, but without policy language addressing the unique needs of low-income students in relation to race, gender, and class barriers. This study examined Oklahoma’s Promise, a statewide tuition-free program for low-income students, through a critical quantitative method and intersectional framework. It used the entire Oklahoma’s Promise population over a ten year span to ask the questions: who is being served by Promise?; when do students exit the program and what variables predict the time of that exit?; and what factors relate to the likelihood of degree completion? To answer these questions participants’ demographic data, hometown, and high school characteristics were disaggregated and analyzed to evaluate equity in the program. Additionally, statistical tests such as Cox’s Proportional Hazards model and multinomial logistic regressions were used to evaluate the validity of political narratives surrounding participant retention and completion. Findings discern Oklahoma’s Promise currently does not equitably serve students across racial, ethnic, gender, and high school characteristics but does serve equitably across hometowns. The findings in this study depart from common trends in literature showing students from underserved populations were more likely than their counterparts to persist towards a degree. However, they were less likely to attain a degree in the program. The findings validate Crenshaw’s (1989) intersectional theory relating to policy frameworks and the need for policy language and practice to consider individuals’ multiple intersecting identities to holistically and equitably serve the gamut of individuals who fall under a specific marginalized status

Analysis and Application of Virtual-Flow Meter Technology for Chiller-Water Valve and Outside-Air Controls

    Get PDF
The following work focuses on using virtual flow meters (VFM) for HVAC controls and how they can replace physical sensors to reduce cost and increase efficiency. The study focuses on implementing VFM to measure outdoor air (OA) intake and the cooling coil chiller water flow rate. As HVAC controls advance with time, OA flow measurements became crucial to precisely maintain building pressurization, building codes, and healthy air quality for occupants. Moreover, Chiller water (CHW) flowrate measurement is essential for detecting inefficiencies in the cooling system and maintaining a stable supply air temperature. Consequently, newer systems utilize physical flow meters despite their high initial cost, whereas older systems do not. Outdoor air and chilled water VFM will help lower initial cost and improve HVAC controls which can increase efficiency and lower operation cost overall. Cascade control was also investigated to improve HVAC controls by integrating it with CHW-VFM. Thus, VFM will also eliminate the systematic error associated with hardware maintenance. Using an experimental air handling unit (AHU), both VFM were implemented and tested for their performance. The CHW VFM had a percentage error of less than 5% compared to a physical ultrasonic meter. Also, cascade control operation has increased performance compared to a single control operation in maintaining supply air temperature under various disturbances. Also, the suggested cascade control VFM covers a larger range of operating conditions, eliminating the need for seasonal resets. In addition, It was found that the OA ratio can be estimated when (TRA - TOA ) > 6 °F with a relative error of less than 8%. Also, a correlation between the outdoor air damper position and OA ratio can be established if mixing chamber pressure is maintained steadily

“A great mass of incompetent men”: Contested medical frontiers in Oklahoma, 1880-1940

    Get PDF
This thesis observes the movement of White aspiring physicians to Indian and Oklahoma Territories in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and the racial and professional interactions that ensued. Like other Whites, Oklahoma represented an opportunity to acquire economic freedom and prosperity through land runs and other settler colonial processes. In Oklahoma, aspiring physicians used the chaos and lawlessness in Oklahoma and Indian Territories along with their whiteness to jumpstart their professional careers while experimenting and enforcing orthodox forms of medicine over Oklahomans. Native, Black, and White Oklahomans resisted through various means, and White orthodox physicians largely used statehood as a means to cement their medical vision for the state of Oklahoma. In the American West, as settler colonial policies spread, contested medical spaces emerged with various forms and understanding of health and healing practiced. In Oklahoma this is especially true. Statehood became a pivotal event that allowed doctors to reflect on the medical future of the state and utilize their recently acquired professional authority and power to enact changes to the medical profession including medical school reform and institutionalizing healthcare. This thesis centralizes national trends in the professionalization of medicine to explain how the American West and Oklahoma were unique in offering White physicians the opportunity to practice medicine, but they were met with resistance and often threatened by nontraditional practitioners

Focal Vibration for Upper Limb Rehabilitation After Stroke

    Get PDF
Stroke is the fifth leading cause of death and a leading cause of disability in the state of Oklahoma and the United States. Although there are several approaches to stroke rehabilitation, most stroke survivors live with upper limb impairments, which causes difficulties for independent living and social participation. One promising method for rehabilitation of the upper limb following stroke is focal muscle vibration, thought to work by activating the Ia afferent muscle spindle fibers for somatosensory and motor cortex stimulation. In this thesis, I describe the development of a novel wearable focal vibration device, called FoVi. Then, I report the findings from a pilot study of the feasibility and efficacy of the FoVi device in a short-term intervention. The FoVi device was developed according to design criteria specified through a focus group, including being comfortable and easy to use, having vibration motor pods controlled by an app on the user’s smartphone, and recording usage logs for real-time communication with therapists. Short-term interventions with FoVi show promise in increasing upper limb mobility and function, evidenced through non-significant increases in Fugl-Meyer Upper Extremity score, Chedoke Arm- Hand Activity Inventory score, and grip strength. In conclusion, the FoVi device could be a helpful treatment method in stroke rehabilitation, and future long-term intervention studies with larger sample sizes and more robust outcome measures may show significant improvements in upper limb function. Combination with other treatment modalities, such as transcranial direct current stimulation, may enable a more effective treatment of the upper limb in stroke patients
