    On the Reciprocal Nature of Active Publics in Divisive Social Issues: Opinion Climate and the Road to Stalled Social Conversations

    This thesis investigated active publics’ communicative course of action by evaluating variables such as individual ethical orientation and perceived opinion climate, providing insight on the justification of the communicative behavior. The Situational Theory of Problem Solving (STOPS) and the Communicative Action for Problem Solving model (CAPS) inquire about the most probable communicative action taken by the different ethical orientations – deontological and teleological. The study accounted for two types of public opinion perception bias –Hostile Media Perception and Projection Bias. Besides public opinion, the study analyzed how different active publics communicate and interact and how ethical orientation comes into play. The results show that views expressed by or projected on the media influence more communicative action, while the opinion projected unto peers in one’s circle tends to influence cross-interaction avoidance. The results suggest that, while there is a safer environment for information forwarding, under the same conditions, when communicative action increases, so does cross-interaction avoidance. Therefore, social conversations become more of a “give and give” dynamic instead of a dialogical “give and take” of information. Ethical orientation shows significant influence on communicative action. The difference between deontologists’ and teleologists’ pathways to communicative action is a phenomenon practitioners need to observe when analyzing immediate or delayed actions of their target public.     The Style, Analysis, and Performance Practices of Selected Choral Works by Isabella Leonarda and Maria Xaveria Peruchona

    This document explores and analyzes sacred music composed by two Ursuline composers of the seventeenth century: Isabella Leonarda and Maria Xaveria Peruchona. It also studies the socio-historical background with particular attention to femininity, the lives of Italian nun musicians, and the history of the Collegio di Sant’Orsola. The updated biographical summaries of Leonarda and Peruchona in this document provide a fuller understanding of their life and music at the Collegio. Although several scholars have explored the conundrum in tenor and bass parts in these nuns’ music, my research provides a different point of view in the academic debate and suggests the conductor should proceed with caution on transposing parts. Through music analysis of selected works by Leonarda and Peruchona, their musical intelligence and aesthetics are rediscovered and better understood. It would be delightful to see today’s conductors consider standardizing the music of both Ursuline composers and starting to extend the repertory canon

    This document aims to demonstrate the need for a college-level curriculum that teaches composers to create successful works of improvisational music, to preset a method which helps composition students develop the tools they need to explore improvisation, and to demonstrate the creative possibilities of carefully controlled improvisation. Because there are few resources available to teach students to compose improvisational music, the methodology proposed here specifically focuses on non-idiomatic and experimental improvisation. This curriculum is sound-oriented, performer-focused, and stresses clarity of notation and critical understanding of a composer's own creative decisions. This document is accompanied by an original composition, And the Ocean Taught Me... which utilizes carefully controlled improvisation to create specific programmatic affects. This piece is written for soprano voice, flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, violin, viola, cello, contrabass, and two percussionists. The soprano's text is a setting of an original piece of flash fiction and incorporates sections of both sung and spoken word

Over time and for a variety of reasons—including Removal, English-only schooling, intermarriage with non-Chikashsha, and economic depression—many people stopped speaking Chikashshanompa'. Still, those who cared deeply for the language tended to it, making it possible for future generations to learn and to speak Chikashshanompa'.     Distribution and history of extensional stresses on vWF surrogate molecules in turbulent flow

    The configuration of proteins is critical for their biochemical behavior. Mechanical stresses that act on them can affect their behavior leading to the development of decease. The von Willebrand factor (vWF) protein circulating with the blood loses its efficacy when it undergoes non-physiological hemodynamic stresses. While often overlooked, extensional stresses can affect the structure of vWF at much lower stress levels than shear stresses. The statistical distribution of extensional stress as it applies on models of the vWF molecule within turbulent flow was examined here. The stress on the molecules of the protein was calculated with computations that utilized a Lagrangian approach for the determination of the molecule trajectories in the flow filed. The history of the stresses on the proteins was also calculated. Two different flow fields were considered as models of typical flows in cardiovascular mechanical devises, one was a Poiseuille flow and the other was a Poiseuille–Couette flow field. The data showed that the distribution of stresses is important for the design of blood flow devices because the average stress can be below the critical value for protein damage, but tails of the distribution can be outside the critical stress regime.Ye
