    To evaluate the anti-diabetic effects of Salvia cabulica ethanolic extract on alloxan-induced diabetic rabbits

    Objective: This study aimed to investigate the hypoglycemic effects of Salvia cabulica ethanolic extract on alloxan-induced diabetic rabbits.&nbsp;Method: During the plant’s extraction, the dried plant was soaked in ethanol for 14 days at room temperature and filtered. The dark green gummy filtrate was obtained by using a rotary evaporator at 40oC. Rabbits with fasting glucose levels of more than 250 mg/dL were considered diabetic. These rabbits were treated with aqueous plant extract in different doses (250 mg and 500 mg) respectively.&nbsp;Results: The fasting blood glucose level (BGL) mean was 293 ± 25.65 in diabetic control group D-I compared to the normal control group A 99 ± 6.16 after the 48 hours of diabetes induction. The fasting blood glucose level (BGL) in group D-II was 192 ± 17.06, group D-III 93.515.95and group D-IV was 89.33 ± 7.79.&nbsp;There was a significant decrease in blood glucose among the group III and IV treated with plant extract at 250 mg/kg and 500 mg/kg, respectivelyConclusion: The plant Salvia cabulica has potential hypoglycemic activity. Therefore, the medicinal plant can be used as a folklore herbal drug in the treatment of diabetes locally.</p

    Investigation of the effectiveness of ECOLAB ’Drape ArmourTM’ Radiation Protection in limiting eye-lens doses of healthcare personnel exposed to ionizing radiation during gastroenterology - interventional radiology procedures

    Objectives: To investigate the efficiency of the ECOLAB “Drape ArmourTM” device in limiting the eye-lens doses absorbed by healthcare personnel exposed to ionizing radiation, in a four-month trial during gastroenterology interventional radiology procedures.&nbsp;Methods: Eyelens doses measured with eye-lens dosimeters calibrated in terms of equivalent dose at 3 mm depth ( Hp(3) ) were collected and analyzed since 2016 along with the irradiation parameters (Dose Area Product - DAP).&nbsp;The eye-lens doses received during the four-month trial, have been compared with doses normally received, in the same conditions of irradiation, in the absence of the protection drape.Results: During the period of use of Drape ArmourTM, the average dose to the eye lens was estimated to be 0.73 mSv (St.dev = 0.40 mSv). The average dose to the eye lens, measured in the same four-month period, across different years from 2017 to 2021, was equal to 1.30 mSv (st. dev = 0.35 mSv).Conclusions: Results suggest the effectiveness of Drape ArmourTM in containing the doses to the eye lens.Keypoint: Limiting eye-lens doses to a maximum value of 20 mSv/year is a real challenge, especially in interventional radiologic facilities. The use of suitable radio-opaque drapes may help healthcare workers involved in such facilities. The aim of the work is to evaluate the efficiency of the ECOLAB “Drape ArmourTM” sterile mono-use drape.</p

    Foodborne viruses can transmit through food in lots of ways including consuming items of animal origin containing zoonotic viruses, consuming contaminated food handled by infected food workers, and consuming contaminated food produced by humans. Viral foodborne illnesses are now a major contributor to all foodborne illness reports in recent years and are seen as a rising issue to the public health of humans and animals. Noroviruses and hepatitis A viruses were shown to be predominantly linked to the food-handler transmission and sewage-contaminated foods, according to microbiological research. In order to facilitate source attribution and identify risk preventive measures, routine, standard surveillance of viral outbreaks, and surveillance of virus occurrence in food products, combined with systematic strain typing, food and clinical microbiologists, would be advocated.</p

    Acremonium species skin infection in a female French bulldog

    Currently, the role of opportunistic pathogenic microflora in the total number of dermatological patients in veterinary clinics has increased significantly. As the author’s personal experience shows, the clinical significance of fungal opportunistic microflora is often underestimated by veterinary professionals. The article considers a case of successful treatment of Acremonium spp skin infection in an 11-year-old female French bulldog. A course of therapy using itraconazole, terbinafine, probiotics, and topical treatment of the skin with an aerosol product containing 8-oxyquinoline (C9H7NO) stopped the infection within 8 weeks. A follow-up examination of the dog after 3 months showed 90% hair regrowth and no evidence of infection.</p

    Importance of fenugreek (Trigonella foenum-graecum L) to smallholder farmers in the case of Eastern and Southern Ethiopia

    Information on the diversity of landraces, cultivation practices, and feeding habits is necessary to improve the crops through selection and/or hybridization. This study was conducted to generate information to document cropping practices, values, and socio-cultural aspects of fenugreek. A study was conducted in five districts of Oromia and one yem special districts at Southern Nations, Nationalities, and Peoples’ Regional States, and data were collected using structured and semi-structured interviews from 144 general and 24 key informants. Assessment of data was conducted through interviews with informants regarding cropping systems of the specific landraces, plant nomenclature of traditional landraces, distinctive criteria of each landrace, and use of fenugreek. R software version 4.1.2 and MS Excel 2010 were used to analyze qualitative data, quantify, sort, determine proportions and draw figures, percentages, means, and tables. The result indicated that Hulbata guracha and Hulbata Dima in Eastern Hararghe and Abesha abish and Orome abish in Yem Special district were reported as popular farmers’ cultivars. The farmers named the cultivars mainly based on seed color, seed source, and taste. Sole cropping of fenugreek was more common in Yem special district (65.3%), whereas intercropping with sorghum and Catha edulis (khat) was common in East Hararghe (27.3%) and crop rotation was practiced in both East Hararghe (97.2%) and Yem especial district (88.8%). The farmers in the study area use fenugreek mainly as food in East Hararghe (100%) while in Yem special district used mainly as a spice (100%). This is due to socio-cultural and knowledge differences on the importance of fenugreek in the study area that influence feeding habits, cultivation practice, and uses.&nbsp;</p

    Physicochemical and antioxidant properties of Coffea arabica honey from Western Oromia, Ethiopia

    Coffea arabica is one of the most widely consumed and marketed commodities in the world. The study was designed to characterize C.arabica honey for botanical composition, physicochemical parameters, and antioxidant properties of honey. Twelve honey samples of C. arabica honey were collected during the flowering period of coffee flowers from the Zander hive. The physicochemical properties of honey and the Botanical origin of honey were determined based on Harmonized methods of the International Honey Commission. The antioxidant power of the coffee monofloral honey samples was determined by dissolving 1.5 gm of honey with 25 ml distilled water and mixing it with 25ml methanol and placed at 25◦C for sixty minutes of maceration using a temperature shaker. The pollen count percentage from honey indicated that all honey samples collected from Gera, Gomma, Yayu, and Manna districts were identified as coffee monofloral honey representing 84%, 93%, 75%, and 73 % of pollen count respectively. The mean moisture, ash, HMF, EC, FA, pH, fructose, glucose and sucrose content of Coffea arabica honey were 22.48%, 0.21%, 11.88, 0.49 mS/cm, 13.44 meq/Kg, 3.32, 32.77%, 32.9%, and 3.57% respectively. The total phenol and flavonoid content range from 42.1-82.1 and 21.7-59.7 mg/100 g of GAE/g respectively while the radical scavenging activity ranges from 60.2- 66.3%. The pollen analysis of honey from the area is coffee monofloral honey since its pollen count exceeds more than 45% and the honey quality also meets the Ethiopian and International standards. The antioxidant power of Coffee honey has a considerable amount of polyphenolics which have relevant antiradical activity.</p

    Background: Ethiopia is rich in sheep and goats, accounting for 63% of the income from financial production and 23% of the cost of food. However, this immense wealth potential has not been well exploited for the support of farmers and their contribution to the economy as a whole due to various factors such as diseases. Among these, fascioliasis is one of the most economically important parasitic diseases of farm animals, especially in sheep.Objectives: To determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with ovine fasciolosis in the study area.Methods: A cross-sectional study design was conducted to determine the prevalence and risk factors associated with ovine fasciolosis in four randomly selected peasant associations in and around Bedele town by using standard fecal sedimentation techniques.&nbsp;Results: Out of a total of 384 sheep faecal samples processed and examined, 85 (22.1%) were positive for fasciolosis. Risk factors such as origin, age, sex, and body condition were also assessed for the occurrence of the disease. Accordingly; Shebe (26.4%) had a higher sheep fasciolosis, followed by Yabella (22.5%), Dabena Daru (20.8%), and Bedele 02 (17.5%) with no significant differences in peasant associations (p &gt; 0.05). The prevalence rate under different body condition scores was recorded as poor (38.6%) compared to medium (22.3%), followed by good (16.3%). Similarly, infection was found to be among female (23%) and male (21%) sex groups; but had a statistically significant association (p &lt; 0.05).Conclusion and Recommendations: Current research suggests that fasciolosis affecting sheep was a common parasitic disease in the study area, so control strategies should be developed to reduce the spread of infection.</p

    A Study on the Specific Growth Rate (SGR) at Different Stages of Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) Production Cycle in Tank Based Aquaculture System

    The conventional assessment of the specific growth rate (SGR) avoiding intermediary data is highly criticized by scholars as to the data of the beginning and the end of the production cycle usually considered for the measurement. To evaluate the SGR, the study was conducted in six concrete tanks under an outdoor laboratory shed from 10th May to 29th July 2017. Tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus) fry was released at the rate of 8 fries per tank as per the recommended stocking density of 320 fishes/decimal in an intensive aquaculture system. To evaluate the experiment, sinking and floating feeds as treatment 1 (T1) and treatment 2 (T2) were used for feeding the fish, respectively. There were three replications for each treatment. During the experimental period, the feed was supplied at the rate of 20%, 15%, and 10% of the body weight in the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd months, respectively. The daily ration of fish was divided into two parts and delivered to fish in the morning and in the evening. Aeration facilities were installed for 24 hours using an air stone aerator. Digital balance was used for measuring the weight of fish in 3 days intervals to assume the trend of SGR while a customized scoop net was used to sample the fish minimizing the stress on the fish. The weight gains of fish were 126.08±5.65 and 132.23±1.29 for T1 and T2, respectively. The mean percent weight gain was found higher in T2 (1715.03±0.00) than in T1 (1639.43±0.00). Feed conversion ratio (FCR) in T1 and T2 were 1.97±0.11 and 2.13±0.18, respectively. The specific growth rates (SGR) of tilapia in T1 and T2 were 4.90±3.03 and 4.98±2.28 considering the data at the beginning and the end of the production cycle, respectively. However, the SGR for floating feed was higher at the initial stage of the production cycle and lower in the later stages. The SGR was almost static for sinking feed from the beginning to the end of the experimental period. The higher FCR in T2 was correlated with the lower SGR in the later stage of the culture period. This ascertains that the pre-determined required amount of feeding ration imparted by the farmers in case of floating feed which wastes the high-cost feed and money. Higher total production was obtained in T2 (1119.52 g) than in T1 (1070.19 g) with 100% survival in both treatments. Therefore, determining SGR in a specific interval might be a useful tool at the farmer’s level.</p

    Caecum volvulus is, in frequency, the second part of the colon concerned by volvulus after the sigmoid and before the transverse colon. This pathology occurs in the cecum with abnormal mobility The mechanism of volvulus can be summarized in 2 either by torsion or tilting. The clinical picture is that of an acute intestinal occlusion by strangulation. The abdomen without preparation (ASP) and the abdominal CT are the radiological examinations of the first choice for the diagnosis. It is a surgical emergency, the conduct of which is to make a resection of the cecum and the terminal ileum. We report the case of a cecal volvulus admitted to the emergency room with an acute intestinal obstruction, the diagnosis was confirmed by an abdominopelvic CT scan and the treatment consisted of an ileocecal resection with immediate restoration of continuity, the postoperative follow-up was simple.</p
