A case of acute transverse myelitis following the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine
A 79-year-old man presented with gait dyspraxia approximately 2 days after receiving the first dose of the AstraZeneca COVID-19 vaccine (AZ-COVID-19-vax). He had no previous active issues and was currently on no medications. Physical examination revealed a 4/5 pyramidal weakness of lower limb musculature with loss of sensation up to the inguinal ligament. </p
Cone cavernoma with a twice secondary intramedullary hemorrhage
Possible complications that may occur and how to solve them before surgery are essential. This case is of special interest for being a low-incidence pathology in a rare location. The case is of high interest because of the importance of evacuating the hemorrhage to prevent sequels and the complexity of its management and highlights the importance of considering the diagnosis of this event.</p
Nutritional aspects in the sportsman’s functional rehabilitation program
The adoption of a proper dietary regimen is of vital importance in the sports practice of athletes, as it is able to ensure an adequate turn-over of all those substances that are consumed with exercise. Our purpose was to demonstrate how adequate protein intake can favorably influence the post-injury rehabilitation phase. Our work is presented as a case-control study on a group of 16 competitive athletes recovering from sports injuries who were prescribed a balanced diet with, to 8 of them, oral supplementation with a pool of amino acids in optimal composition in the dose of 1g/kg/day. In the two groups, recovery time, muscle strength, and injured limb diameter were taken as variables. It was observed that the group treated with amino acid supplementation had statistically significant benefits compared with the group treated with diet prescription alone.</p
Character of somatic and psycho-emotional disorders in children with various types of juvenile arthritis
Rheumatic diseases in children are a source of serious medical, social, and personal problems due to the prevalence, and severity of pain syndrome, progressive course with involvement of internal organs and disorders in the psycho-emotional sphere in the pathological process. The nature of somatic and psycho-emotional disorders was studied in 70 children aged 7 years - 16 years old with various types of Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA). The severe course of the disease, and as a result, disability, leads to emotional instability and social maladjustment of children. The predominance of articular forms with a primary lesion of the joints of the lower extremities and their deformation was remarkable. In children with a systemic variant of JRA, kidney damage was detected in the form of urinary syndrome and tubulointerstitial nephritis. Headache was the leading clinical manifestation of autonomic disorders caused by vascular disorders.</p
Industrial entrepreneur’s perception of greenhouse gas emission and its impact in Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR
Laos ranked 8th in terms of total greenhouse gas emissions among ASEAN countries, with 17.9 million metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (MtCO2e) emissions. The energy sector was responsible for the majority of emissions, accounting for about 50% or 8.9 MtCO2e, followed by the agriculture sector at around 35% or 6.3 MtCO2e, and other sectors at approximately 15% or 2.7 MtCO2e (The Global Carbon Atlas reported, 2018). This study investigates greenhouse gas emissions and environmental issues among industrial entrepreneurs in Vientiane Capital, Lao PDR. Data was collected by using questionnaires and face-to-face interviews were conducted with participants from 80 different plants in Vientiane Capital between January 25 and March 20, 2018. It identifies various environmental problems caused by industrial plants, emphasizing the need for specific pollution source mitigation and sustainable waste management. The study reveals significant impacts on health and living conditions, highlighting the urgency for proactive measures. Climate variations, alterations in seasons, and intensified storms are identified as major contributors to violence levels. Strategies proposed by entrepreneurs include accurate measurement methods, pollution treatment systems, improved power efficiency, renewable energy adoption, an environmental protection organization, and efficiency enhancements in logistics and transportation. The study emphasizes the role of government, plant owners, and the general population in addressing CO2 emissions through collective efforts. Overall, it provides valuable insights and calls for proactive measures, stakeholder engagement, and diverse strategies for sustainability in Vientiane Capital and Laos.</p
Determination of optimum planting time of different Sesame (Sesamum indicium L.) varieties for Chewaka district, Western Oromia, Ethiopia
Sowing date is the major problem in the production and productivity of sesame in western Oromia Ethiopia. The experiment was conducted to identify optimum sowing dates for sesame varieties to produce better seed yields. A field experiment consisting of the combination of three sesame varieties and three sowing times employed Randomized Complete Block in factorial arrangements with three replications. Analysis of variance indicated that plant height; branches number per plant and number of capsules per plant were significantly increased with sowing sesame at the onset of rainfall. All sesame varieties sown on the onset of rainfall gave the maximum seed yield in both years whereas three varieties had low yield at 10 days after the first and 20 days after the first. Among the three varieties, the Walin variety produced a maximum seed yield of 670 and 747 kg ha-1 on a farm in the first and second year respectively. The maximum yield (670 and 971 kg ha-1) was obtained from Walin and Obsa sesame varieties in the first and second years of the farm respectively. Therefore, the result indicated that sowing sesame varieties at the onset of rainfall is recommended for Chewaka areas and similar agroecology. </p
Tandem architectures for artificial thylakoid membranes
In this concept paper, new layered materials, such as multilayer hybrid systems, are described. These materials can be implemented into novel biomimetic devices, which can act as artificial photosystems or as “artificial thylakoid membranes” e.g. for the splitting of water. The architecture can be based on active nanoparticles or small catalytic clusters which can be synthesized from robust, inexpensive, and abundant material precursors. These multi-layered architectures can act as “artificial thylakoid membranes”, which can mimic the photosynthetic apparatus on the nanoscale. The development of “artificial thylakoid membranes” and tandem devices promises a strong impact and benefits for the field of artificial photosynthesis and the development of artificial leaves.</p
Kleefstra syndrome and sleep disorders: An Italian case report
Kleefstra Syndrome (KS)is a rare genetic syndrome affecting approximately 1 in 200,000 individuals and is caused by either a deletion of the subtelomeric region of chromosome 9q (50%) or by a loss of function mutation in the Euchromatin Histone Methyl Transferase 1 (EHMT1) gene (50%). In this case report we analyze the case of an 8-year-old boy affected by KS from the parent’s point of view. The focus of the report is the detailed narrative analysis of the parent’s experience written directly by the mother and the complex intervention to reduce a severe sleep disturbance associated with the syndrome. A clinical assessment was carried out, focused on understanding the extent and frequency of the awakenings with a specific assessment questionnaire.The association of therapy with melatonine and trazodone was highly decisive and improved the well-being of the child and the family. The Author is carrying out further studies for the drafting of guidelines for sleep disorders in KS.</p
Evaluation of recycled gravel in the concrete mixture for the surface layer of rigid flooring
Paving with recycled aggregates has already been widely carried out in some countries where there is already consolidated knowledge on the subject. This work analyzes in the laboratory the physical and mechanical behavior aspects of recycled aggregate in concrete mixes for rigid pavements. After selective collection at a construction site, the waste undergoes a crushing process, subsequent to granulation and separation into fractions to be used again in the realization of a new mixture with 40 and 100% replacement of natural gravel for recycled with the addition of structural concrete fibers that decrease shrinkage and increase final strength. In the same mix, these mixtures were compared with a conventional mixture that obtained better performance and presented greater compressive strength. The study sought to analyze the technical feasibility of using recycled material, testing the thickness of several concrete slabs for application on the pavement. Thus, it is concluded that the analyzed recycled aggregate is of promising use in hard pavement coating, as it presents a compressive strength superior to 25 MPa.</p
Reducing weed impacts and yield losses by application of herbicides in summer-grown maize
A field trial was conducted at Holeta Agricultural Research Station and Medegudina, Central Ethiopia, during the summer season of 2021 to study the effects of different weed control methods against annual grasses and broadleaf weeds in summer planted Maize. The experiment included five treatments; COYOTE 440 SE 3L ha-1, Primagramgold 660 SC 3L ha-1, twice hand weeding, weed-free and weedy check. Major weeds in the fields were Polygonum nepalense, Raphanus raphanistrum, Guizotia scabra, Galinsoga pulviflora, Corrigiola capensis, Caylusea abyssinica, Plantago lanceoleta, Spergula arvensis, Medicago polymorpha, and Phalaris paradoxa. The result signified that the most dominant weed species was Polygonum nepalense with a relative density of 18.28 %. Statistically non-significant results due to all treatments being recorded on ear per plant and 1000 kernel weights at both locations. The results showed that the most effective treatment with higher weed control efficacy (100%) and reduced weed dry weight (0.00 kg/ha) was weed-free. The application of COYOTE 440 SE produced maximum stand count (90 m2), Grain yield (4266 kg/ha), and minimum yield loss (1.49%) while statistically non-significant results were produced in cob per plant and thousand kernel weights. Hence, the study concludes that COYOTE 440 SE 3L ha-1 and weed-free could be more effective as compared to all other treatments without compromising on maize grain yield loss due to weeds.</p
