Traditional Bachelor of Science in Nursing students present evidence-based-practice projects based upon exploration of literature related to clinical practice topics. Student groups present a recorded presentation of their poster
Faculty support in higher education
The AXIS office provides instructional design support to the College of Education and Professional Studies. As a graduate assistant, my work involves creating faculty professional development resources related to Canvas and instructional best practices. This presentation is a review of my work and demonstrates a new tool I introduced to the AXIS team: the Miro online whiteboard tool.Graduate Research PresentationFaculty Mentor, Dr. Nancy Hasting
Diversity practices adopted in higher education leadership in the Southeastern United States
In the study of exploring diversity practices adopted in higher education leadership in a Southeastern United States, the methodology will be qualitative phenomenological descriptive, with semi-structure interview to guide the research. The study will employ purposive sampling technique, to select faculty members, possessing rich knowledge, by virtue of their experience with the phenomenon of interest, and willing to participate in the study. This is to provide detail information, in-depth, and in-breadth of diversity practices adopted in higher education leadership, at the University of West Florida. Adhering to no specific number of participants upon reaching saturation the data collection will end. To secure confidentiality, and security of participants, Internal Review Board approval will be sorted before data collection. The analysis will proceed by exploring each interview on audio tape. This will involve transcribing and cleaning the data, doing minor editing, formatting, and general tidying up of the data, precisely, familiarizing and memoing emergent patterns, for coding; continuous comparison will lead to tentative categories that will then be compared to each other. This process will assist to create the emerging themes, to critically reflect, and review the process to ensure rigor, and the credibility of the procedure, and trustworthiness of the findings. Additionally, the study will employ triangulation of interviews and documents, using member checking, inter-coder agreement, rich and thick descriptions of the data, reviewing and resolving disconfirming evidence. The final data will be presented in tables, and graphs.Graduate Research PresentationFaculty Mentor, Dr. Wisdom Mensa
Medical terminology for healthcare professions
Medical Terminology for Healthcare Professions is an open educational resource (OER) that focuses on breaking down, pronouncing, and learning the meaning of medical terms within the context of anatomy and physiology. This resource is targeted for healthcare administration, health sciences, and pre-professional students.
This book is an adaptation of "Building a Medical Terminology Foundation" published by Carter and Rutherford at eCampus Ontario. The anatomy and physiology content of this OER has been adapted from the OpenStax Anatomy and Physiology OER by Betts et al. Both books are licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 Internal License and in the spirit of OPEN education we have licensed this OER with the same license
Equality in transgender healthcare
Due to the rising number of discriminations and lack of access to equal and quality healthcare within the transgender community, it is crucial to become aware of the health disparities and assist in advancing healthcare to provide an emotionally safe environment for this community (Rivera, 2019).Research presentationFaculty Mentor: Dr. Kathy Andrese
Educational podcasting evolution: A review of the literature
Thirteen scholarly articles were systematically reviewed to derive trends and themes throughout the literature regarding the topic of educational podcasting. The trends and themes derived address educational podcasting as a pedagogical tool for disseminating effective, efficient, and engaging knowledge in online teaching and learning to meet the modern student's needs who has transitioned from the pen and paper to the mobile device and earpod.Graduate Research PresentationFaculty Mentor: Dr. Giang Nguyễn-Nguye
Diagnoses and charges of patients with ICD-10-CM environmental pollution exposure codes in Florida
Purpose: Pollution affects both health and climate change. There is no published research on the use of four environmental pollution exposure codes new to ICD-10-CM. The purpose of this research is to provide a baseline use of the four codes in Florida, the most frequent related principal diagnoses, demographics of patients exposed to environmental pollution, total charges, and associations of total charges that are related to environmental pollution.
Principal Results: There were 341 patients in Florida who visited an ED due to environmental pollution exposure from 2016 to 2019 and 159 patients in Florida who were hospitalized. The total charges for all patients with a documented exposure to environmental pollution were 9,933,752 for inpatients. The independent variables that were statistically significant in the ED regression model of total charges were other insurance (-0.361 parameter estimate, 0.017 p-value, -30.3% decrease to charges); and for-profit ownership (0.376 parameter estimate, 0.0005 p-value, 45.7% increase to charges). For the inpatient regression model, the independent variables that were statistically significant were Medicare (0.317 parameter estimate, 0.027 p-value, 37.3% increase to charges); LOS (0.091 parameter estimate, <0.0001 p-value, 9.5% increase to charges); exposure to other pollution (0.407 parameter estimate, 0.002 p-value, 50.3% increase to charges); and for-profit hospital ownership (0.292 parameter estimate, 0.012 p-value, 33.9% increase to charges).
Major Conclusions: Patients exposed to air pollution frequently were diagnosed with asthma or other chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Patients with water pollution exposure frequently had open wounds or infections stemming from open wounds. For both ED and inpatient visits, $11,312,969 was charged to patients over the four year period. Due to the challenges of documenting it clinically, the true charges of healthcare due to environmental pollution are probably much higher. Education may be needed for pollution codes to be understood and used more frequently by clinicians and coders.Journal ArticleFinal article publishe
Staffing-ratios and nursing burnout
Mental health can affect many different aspects in the nursing profession. In this project, we are focusing on how staffing ratios, adequate and inadequate, affect occupational stress and burnout of nurses over time. These factors not only affect the mental health, but also the patient outcomes, patient safety, and number of errors made. It is identified that there is a significant relationship between insomnia, burnout and mental health among nurses (Cheng et al., 2020).Research presentationFaculty Mentor: Dr. Kathy Andrese
