A Case Study on the Career High Pathway in a Professional Male Tennis Player : From the narrative of an ex-professional male tennis player in Japan

    Get PDF
This research aims to identify the difficulties faced by professional tennis players in the process of building their careers to the peak and to illustrate how they overcame these challenges. The analysis method employed was the narrative approach of qualitative research (Dowling, N., 1996; Douglas, K., et al., 2015; Sparkes, 2000). The narrative approach does not segment data into categories but instead maintains the original units for analysis and interpretation (Okubo & Miyasaka, 2014). Triangulation was conducted among the co-researchers to validate this interpretation. The findings of the analysis were as follows: The narratives of an ex-professional player suggested three main issues: 1) tour selection, 2) performance and training environment, and 3) obtaining sponsors. In response to the three challenges identified in the analysis, the ex-professional player responded as follows. When selecting tours, they prioritized those with a high chance of earning points, based on information about foreign players and ZONE. However, it was suggested that they faced two dilemmas: uncertainty of information and financial constraints. It was implied that they expanded their network by actively approaching players from foreign countries to improve their performance and training environment, and that they utilized this information to address these challenges. To acquire sponsors, the ex-professional tennis player engaged in year-round PR activities while also striving to build a shared understanding with companies during their non-playing time. This study examined the narrative of a single ex-professional player, and therefore, the findings cannot be generalized. In the future, it will be important to conduct research that comprehensively captures both competitive and non-competitive activities as port of a study of career-high pathways for players.departmental bulletin pape

Welcoming Diversity : Accommodating Muslim Faculty and Students in Japanese Academic Institutions

    Get PDF
This study merges personal reflexivity with empirical research to explore the experiences of Muslim international students and faculty in Japan, highlighting the integration challenges within the framework of Japan's higher education internationalization. As a Muslim faculty member at Senshu University, the author employs a reflexive narrative to examine the interplay between personal experiences and broader institutional practices affecting Muslim community members in a non-Muslim majority academic setting like Japan. This approach reveals systemic barriers to inclusivity and offers insights into practical strategies for enhancing cultural and religious accommodations. By detailing the implementation of practical measures such as halal-friendly food provisioning, prayer facilities, and cultural sensitivity training, the study advocates for comprehensive institutional reforms that support diversity and enrich the educational landscape for all academic community members.departmental bulletin pape

The Role of Local Governments in Climate Protection Policy : The Case of the Federal State of Berlin Lila OKAMURA In Germany, environmental policy, especially climate protection policy, is one of the most critical policy issues for the country. As one of the countries most actively engaged in climate protection, and as the largest and arguably most influential member state of the EU, Germany plays a pivotal role in shaping EU climate protection policies. Climate change is a global issue, and policy decisions are made at international, EU, and national level. Germany's federal states, however, also exert significant influence in determining the success of the climate protection policies of the country as a whole. This paper focuses on the role of local governments in Germany's climate protection policy and analyses the case of the federal state of Berlin to illustrate the potential of local government involvement in this area.departmental bulletin pape

departmental bulletin pape
