Recognition and current issues faced by female elite athletes in mass media engagement
Get PDFThe purpose of this study is to clarify how female elite athletes, who have been represented as unique to women in mass media, perceive their relationships with the media and how they are represented as the mass media becomes more diversified due to the spread of social media, and to examine the problems that emerge from them. Therefore, we set up an analysis framework based on mass media representation peculiar to female athletes using the life history method for five female elite athletes who have participated in Olympics.
As a result, it was found that female elite athletes bear a psychological burden due to the way they are represented and interviewed by the mass media because they are women. This discomfort and dilemma have been present since the early stages of their athletic careers. Additionally, an analysis using the life history method revealed that female elite athletes are subject to gender-biased representations by the media throughout different stages of their athletic careers. In their younger years, more attention is often paid to their appearance rather than their athletic achievements, and they are portrayed in terms of marriage and, after childbirth, as mothers. This continuous portrayal reflects a stereotypical gender bias that aligns their athletic career stages with their life stages. It becomes evident that society's stereotypical gender representations of femininity are applied to female elite athletes, highlighting it as an ongoing issue that evolves through different stages of their athletic careers.

This paper examines a speech recording method designed to analyze instructor communication in Iaido instructional settings. Chapter 1 addresses the need for a simplified Japanese language as a foundation for translation and explores the importance of studying the structure and delivery of instructor speech to effectively support foreign learners. These topics are considered from the perspective of martial arts instructors teaching overseas. Chapter 2 focuses on the significance of oral instructions in Iaido and the evolving instructional environment, approached from the perspective of a Japanese language researcher. Chapters 3 and 4 present a method for recording the speech of experienced Iaido instructors in instructional contexts.
