Simple and fast surrogate constraint heuristics for the maximum independent set problem
In a recent paper Glover (J. Heuristics 9:175-227, 2003) discussed a variety of surrogate constraint-based heuristics for solving optimization problems in graphs. The key ideas put forth in the paper were illustrated by giving specializations designed for certain covering and coloring problems. In particular, a family of methods designed for the maximum cardinality independent set problem was presented. In this paper we report on the efficiency and effectiveness of these methods based on considerable computational testing carried out on test problems from the literature as well as some new test problems. © 2007 Springer Science+Business Media, LLC
E-collaboration and e-commerce in virtual worlds: The potential of second life and world of warcraft
Virtual worlds can be defined as technology-created virtual environments that incorporate representations of real world elements such as human beings, landscapes and other objects. Recent years have seen the growing use of virtual worlds such as Second Life and World of Warcraft for entertainment and business purposes, and a rising interest from researchers in the impact that virtual worlds can have on patterns of e-collaboration behavior and collaborative task outcomes. This article looks into whether actual work can be accomplished in virtual worlds, whether virtual worlds can provide the basis for trade (B2C and C2C e-commerce), and whether they can serve as a platform for credible studies of ecollaboration behavior and related outcomes. The conclusion reached is that virtual worlds hold great potential in each of these three areas, even though there are certainly pitfalls ahead. © 2009, IGI Global
Mutual adaptation in buyer-supplier relationships
In buyer-supplier relationships, effective partnerships require mutual adaptation to execute strategies effectively. Using LISREL, we test a model of relational exchange factors that includes dependence, joint action and trust and their influence on the mutual adaptation of supplier and buyer firms in the U.S. automotive industry. The results of the study indicate that both economic and social dimensions of the relationship impact mutual adaptation, but that these two are not necessarily complementary. Specifically, supplier adaptation is negatively impacted by trust between supplier and buyer, but positively impacted by dependence and joint action. Buyer adaptation, on the other hand, is positively impacted by trust between the two, joint action and the adaptation undertaken by the supplier. The negative relationship between trust and supplier adaptation may be symptomatic of deeper issues in the U.S. automotive industry that should merit concern. © 2007 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved
Designing E-collaboration technologies to facilitate compensatory adaptation
This article argues that e-collaboration technologies often pose obstacles to effective communication in complex collaborative tasks. The reason presented is that typically those technologies selectively suppress face-to-face communication elements that human beings have been designed by evolution to use extensively while communicating with each other. It is argued that technology users invariably react to those obstacles by engaging in compensatory adaptation, whereby they change their communicative behavior in order to compensate for the obstacles. The article concludes with a call for more research on how e-collaboration technologies can be designed to facilitate compensatory adaptation
Furthering information systems action research: A post-positivist synthesis of four dialectics
As authors of Information Systems (IS) Action Research (AR) studies attempt to report their results, the calls for AR research design, conduct, presentation, and evaluation guidelines must be answered to advance the maturation process of AR and move it into a more prominent position in mainstream publications. AR is a research approach that is most often associated with researchers who subscribe to an interpretive epistemology and collect qualitative data and is more common in Europe and Australia than in North America. To further IS AR, especially in North America, we offer ten recommendations based on a post-positivist synthesis of four dialectics: rigor/relevance, positivist/interpretive epistemology, quantitative/qualitative methodology, and confirmatory/ disconfirmatory evidence. Any researcher may profit from developing his or her own synthesis of these four dialectics. Our synthesis reveals an innovative view of falsifiability, grounded theory methodology, triangulation, and recommendations for presentation of findings to a broad audience in mainstream research journals. Discontinuous discretization for least-squares formulation of singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems in one and two dimensions
In this paper, we consider the singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problem in one and two dimensions. The boundary value problem is decomposed into a first-order system to which a suitable weighted least-squares formulation is proposed. A robust, stable, and efficient approach is developed baaed on local discontinuous Galerkin (LDG) discretization for the weak form. Uniform error estimates are derived. Numerical examples are presented to illustrate the method and the theoretical results. Comparison studies are made between the proposed method and other methods. © 2008 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
