Body dissatisfaction correlates with inter-peer competitiveness, not media exposure: A brief report
Although scholars and professional organizations regularly lament the influence of media on women\u27s body dissatisfaction, research evidence to support such concerns remains inconsistent. In 2011, Ferguson, Winegard, and Winegard proposed a Catalyst Model of women\u27s body dissatisfaction which provided a diathesis-stress perspective on such phenomenon. The Catalyst Model argued that women\u27s body dissatisfaction was influenced by peer competition with other proximal women rather than distal depictions of women in the media. This hypothesis was tested in this study, with a sample of 218 young Mexican American women. Body dissatisfaction was predicted primarily by larger body mass index (BMI), depressive symptoms and feelings of inferiority in comparison to other women. Exposure to thin-ideal images on television did not correlate with body dissatisfaction. Life satisfaction among young women was related to depression levels, perceptions of parental affection and body dissatisfaction, but not to exposure to thin-ideal images on television. Results supported the Catalyst Model. © 2012 Guilford Publications, Inc
Abstract Social capital is an intangible which is very difficult to copy and is mainly composed of the relationships that an organization establishes with its stakeholders, i.e. groups that ensure its survival. Relationship networks can be as or more important than markets and hierarchies. However, the construction of social capital does not seem to be an organizational priority. By means of a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent groups, this research examines the level of awareness of the concept among communication practitioners in Argentina. The study verifies a notorious nescience of it. Thus, this intangible of great value for organizations is not being properly exploited. A recommendation is made to include this concept in topic-specific courses in management programs, particularly in communication, as well as specific continuous education for upper and middle management
AbstractIn the current scenario of systemic violence that predominates in northern Mexico, a subjectivity of risk in the practice of journalism has been observed. This subjectivity of risk favors a process referred to as “socialidad de resguardo”, which is characterized by strategies of resistance, negotiation, or integration by the multiplicity of social actors, as well as their membership to institutional settings that define and guide the activities of said actors, given the predominance of systemic violence
AbstractThis paper aims to analyze the privatization process of TV channels in Argentina, as the most representative media policy measure carried out by Carlos Menem’s Administration, in the context of the adoption of a neoliberal economic model. The methodology used is bibliographic and documentary analysis to reconstruct the characteristics of a process which has not been studied in depth, compared to the amount of research available on privatization cases completed in Argentina during the 1990s. This work proposes a theoretical and methodological framework to study public communication policies, which are conceptually framed as a social process. Around this course of action it is possible to analyze the role of the State and its interaction with other actors: media outlets and media workers. The overall purpose is to examine the different positions adopted by these actors alongside the privatization process of the TV channels. Special attention is given to the description actors’ strategies and power relationships established between them, in accordance to their own interests
A cross-cultural study of motivation for self-employment: Comparing China, Mexico, and the USA
Purpose: The purpose of this paper is to examine the relative levels of multiple individual and environmental factors that influence self-employment motivation in China, Mexico, and the USA and the effect of each factor on motivation for self-employment in each country. Design/methodology/approach: A survey was administered to 987 students at universities in the USA (n=535), Mexico (n=195), and China (n=257). Confirmatory factor analyses were conducted to assure measurement model fit. Hypotheses were tested using ANOVA tests and regression analyses. Findings: Results indicate that: the USA has the individual and environmental factors most favorable to self-employment; Mexico has the highest level of motivation for self-employment; independence and risk taking are the best predictors of motivation for self-employment in all three countries; the predictive capability of independence, risk taking, and social networks appears similar for China and the USA; and the predictive capability of informal institutions, government support, and legal support appears similar for China and Mexico. Originality/value: In spite of abundant research on factors involving motivation for self-employment, little research has tested relationships among sizable sets of these factors in different countries. This paper examines the effects of multiple individual and environmental factors on self-employment motivation in China, Mexico, and the USA. © Emerald Group Publishing Limited

AbstractThe interests of Mexican television companies and the Spanish-speaking television sector in the United States have been closely linked since the 1960s, when insightful Mexican entrepreneurship, investment capitals and media programming were all exported to the North. Both industries had remained interrelated for over 50 years via a multiplicity of personal and contractual relationships, including a series of program license agreements (PLA). This article examines the three-year long legal dispute between two leading figures in their respective markets: Televisa (Mexico) and Univision (United States). The dispute, resolved in different stages in 2009 and 2010, centered on the value of Televisa programming based on its program license agreement with Univision, as well as digital media rights over Televisa programs broadcast over the web in the United States. This case and its resolution are analyzed in light of the half-century long relationship between these two companies as well as the way each of their administrative teams responded to the problems faced during a period of intense political, economic and technological change

Comparison and temperature study of lectin activities in Texas live oak (Quercus fusiformis) crude extracts
Lectins are proteins that contain at least one non-catalytic carbohydrate binding domain. In plants, these proteins are hypothesized to play a critical role in plant defense functions. The extant literature shows that lectins have diverse applications, including medicinal and therapeutic ones. This study examines the presence and the level of lectin activity in the Texas live oak (Quercus fusiformis Small), a plant native to and replete in the South Texas region. To detect and compare lectin activity among selected plant parts of Q. fusiformis, agglutination and protein assays were conducted. The influence of four factors on lectin activity was investigated. These factors are: plant part (leaf, stem and fruit), tree section (A, B and C), temperature (0, 50 and 100°C) and time duration (1, 2 and 3 h) at the different temperature levels. Analysis of variance (ANOVA) associated with a factorial experiment, mean comparisons by way of a Tukey\u27s test, trend analysis and regression analysis comprised the analytical strategy. Results indicated that lectin activity is present in each of the selected plant parts and varies significantly across these parts. ANOVA revealed that lectin activity is significantly linked to temperature level. Although relatively stable from 0 to 50°C, trend and regression analyses indicated significant linear and quadratic effects of temperature on lectin activity. These analyses indicated that maximum activity is predicted to occur at about 31°C. No interaction effect was detected between and among the four factors examined. © 2011 Academic Journals Inc
Referrals to the washoe county mental health court
This study examined the demographic, mental health, and criminal characteristics of 1, 220 referrals to the Washoe County mental health court over a three-year period in order to determine which characteristics were associated with acceptance into the court. Results indicated that those with a thought disorder, a mood disorder, a felony index charge, and a misdemeanor index charge were significantly more likely to be accepted into the mental health court and those with a crime against a person, a crime against the community, and males were significantly less likely to be accepted into the court. A violent current crime and/or criminal history were also associated with rejection from the mental health court. These results have important policy implications for those who are referred to the court but who receive another disposition of their case and for those with violent crimes or criminal histories who are rejected by the court. This research is limited by its focus on one mental health court but does help to fill a void in the mental health court literature and sets the stage for a new focus on what becomes of those rejected from the mental health court. © International Association of Forensic Mental Health Services
