Do cell phones, iPods/MP3 players, siblings and friends matter? Predictors of child body mass in a U.S. Southern Border City Middle School
Objective: This study examines the association of children\u27s (i) micro-social environment, specifically siblings [kin-friends] and friends from school and neighborhood [non-kin-friends], and (ii) ownership of information and communication technologies (ICT), specifically cell phones and iPod/MP3 players, with body mass index percentile (BMIp). Subjects: Fifty-five randomly selected 6th graders with a mean age of 12 years, stratified by gender (23 boys and 32 girls), from a Texas middle school located in a city along the U.S. southern border. Methods: The linear regression of BMIp on number of siblings and of non-kin-friends, and ownership of cell phone and of iPod/MP3 player was examined using two models: M1 was based on the manual selection of predictors from a pool of potential predictors. M2 was derived from the predictors specified in M1 using backward elimination technique. Because sample size was small, the significance of regression coefficients was evaluated using robust standard errors to calculate t-values. Data for predictors were obtained through a survey. Height and weight were obtained through actual anthropometric measurements. BMIp was calculated using the on-line BMI calculator of the Center for Disease Control and Prevention. Results: Findings reveal that children\u27s social environment and ICT ownership predict BMIp; specifically, number of siblings (M2: β = -0.34, p-value \u3c.001), and ownership of iPod/MP3 players (M2: β = 0.33, p-value \u3c.001). These results underscore the importance of family in configuring, and of new personal technical devices (that encourage solitary, and oftentimes sedentary, activities) in predicting child body mass. © 2011 Published by Elsevier Ltd
AbstractThe object of this research is to identify the preferences in terms of visits of YouTube users within a specific timeframe, creating highly topical subjects in this online video sharing site. The specific goal of this article was to classify the site content according to the most viewed videos in a month. This allowed the researcher to define the profile of the most frequent users and the keys of their elections. Simultaneously, based on these results, it is expected to be able to identify future trends and dynamics of both the users and the channel. The conclusions of this research highlight the user’s preference for professional clips with a simultaneous distribution through other media. It addition, a growth in views is emphasized for clips produced by users with more than a million followers
Abstract This paper analyzes the corporate communication of fifty advertising agencies and media planners through its Web portals. Content analysis was used as the research technique. The results show that both advertising agencies and media centers are far from a desirable situation with respect to their corporate communications web page, which is especially bothersome when these organizations present themselves as experts in field and compete with each other to manage communication assets of other organizations. Furthermore, although they formally give importance to corporate communications, the absence of key corporate elements and poor location of some content contained in Web pages is noticeably pointed out
AbstractThe paper aims to uncover the representations constructed regarding the possibility of implementing a land reform in Argentina and the argumentative schemes by which such representations circulated in the press during the decaying phase of the Peronist government, between early 1975 and 1976. For the study four particular cases were selected: daily newspapers La Nación and La Opinión, Anales magazine and La Tierra newspaper, with the aim of comprising a representative sample covering divergent voices related to the problem studied. As tools of analysis, categories within Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) where used to answer the following question: by which arguments and argumentation schemes is the possession and use of land justified and how is this represented in the published sources selected for the study
External finance and firm survival in the aftermath of the crisis: Evidence from Eastern Europe and Central Asia
We use two data sets to study how country and firm characteristics affected firms\u27 financial constraints and their likelihood of survival during the early phase of the recent global financial crisis in Eastern Europe and Central Asia (ECA), a region that was especially hard hit. The first data source provides information on the reported severity of financial constraints for 360 firms from 23 countries in 2002, 2005, and 2008. By following the same firms over time, we are able to summarize the gradual easing of financial constraints from 2002 to 2005 and their tightening during the crisis. Key findings are that financial constraints during the crisis were less severe in countries with well-established foreign banks (i.e. entered prior to year 2000), and that changes in the severity of financial constraints were more pronounced for large firms than others during the crisis (though large firms continued to have less severe constraints on average). The second data source provides information on whether firms remained in operation in 2009 in six ECA countries. Controlling for other relevant characteristics, firms were more likely to survive the crisis if they had access to external credit. © 2012 Association for Comparative Economic Studies
Validation of Satellite Precipitation Adjustment Methodology From Seven Basins in the Continental United States
The precipitation science community has expressed concern regarding the ability of satellite-based precipitation products to accurately capture rainfall values over land. There has been some work that has focused on addressing the deficiencies of satellite precipitation products, particularly on the adjustment of bias. This article outlines a methodology that adjusts satellite products utilizing ground-based precipitation data. The approach is not a simple bias adjustment, but is a three-step process that transforms a satellite product based on a ground-based precipitation product (NEXRAD-derived Multisensor Precipitation Estimator [MPE] product or rain-gauge data). The developed methodology was successfully applied to seven moderate-to-large sized watersheds from continental United States (CONUS) and northern Mexico over a spectrum of climatic regimes ranging from dry to humid settings. Methodology validation is based on comparison of observed and simulated streamflow generated with SWAT (Soil and Water Assessment Tool) model using unadjusted and adjusted precipitation products as input. Streamflow comparison is based on mass balance error and Nash-Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient. Finally, the contribution of how adjustment to correct misses, false alarms, and bias impacts adjusted datasets and the potential impact that the adjustment methodology can have on hydrological applications such as water resource monitoring and flood prediction are explored. © 2011 American Water Resources Association
A balanced finite element method for singularly perturbed reaction-diffusion problems
Consider the singularly perturbed linear reaction-diffusion problem -ε 2Δu+bu = f in Ω ⊂ R, u = 0 on ∂ Ω, where d ≥ 1, the domain Ω is bounded with (when d ≥ 2) Lipschitz-continuous boundary ∂ Ω, and the parameter ε satisfies 0 \u3c ε ≤ 1. It is argued that for this type of problem, the standard energy norm v & [ε 2|v| 21/2 + ||v||2/0] 1/2 is too weak a norm to measure adequately the errors in solutions computed by finite element methods: the multiplier ε 2 gives an unbalanced norm whose different components have different orders of magnitude. A balanced and stronger norm is introduced, then for d ≥ 2 a mixed finite element method is constructed whose solution is quasi-optimal in this new norm. For a problem posed on the unit square in ℝ 2, an error bound that is uniform in ε is proved when the new method is implemented on a Shishkin mesh. Numerical results are presented to show the superiority of the new method over the standard mixed finite element method on the same mesh for this singularly perturbed problem. © 2012 Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics
AbstractThis study compares the cognitive categorization of characters in television series by a group of young girls and boys (N = 62, average age = 11 years old), and a group of teenagers (N= 63, average age = 14.5 years old). In order to carry out this study, each participant viewed an episode of a television series that exhibited high audience ratings within the designated age groups. Subsequent to viewing the episode, a semi-structured interview was carried out. Analyses show some relevant differences between the age groups with respect to accessibility and variability of features that provide content to the schemas. However, some common mechanisms are also identified in both groups, which are considered relevant for the study of television series understanding and identification processes. Some theoretical, research and practical implications are discussed
A longitudinal test of video game violence influences on dating and aggression: A 3-year longitudinal study of adolescents
Background: In 2011 the field of video game violence experienced serious reversals with repudiations of the current research by the US Supreme Court and the Australian Government as non-compelling and fundamentally flawed. Scholars too have been calling for higher quality research on this issue. The current study seeks to answer this call by providing longitudinal data on youth aggression and dating violence as potential consequences of violent video game exposure using well-validated clinical outcome measures and controlling for other relevant predictors of youth aggression. Method: A sample of 165, mainly Hispanic youth, were tested at 3 intervals, an initial interview, and 1-year and 3-year intervals. Results: Results indicated that exposure to video game violence was not related to any of the negative outcomes. Depression, antisocial personality traits, exposure to family violence and peer influences were the best predictors of aggression-related outcomes. Interpretation: The current study supports a growing body of evidence pointing away from video game violence use as a predictor of youth aggression. Public policy efforts, including funding, would best be served by redirecting them toward other prevention programs for youth violence. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd
