    Get PDF

Purpose: This study examined the lived experiences of Mexican American mothers residing near a US/Mexico border town whose children underwent a surgical procedure requiring general anesthesia. Design: Phenomenology was used to examine the lived experiences of the participants. Method: Twelve Mexican American mothers were interviewed in the preoperative phase; 9 from the 12 participants were interviewed in the post-surgery phase. Giorgi\u27s method of phenomenological analysis was used to identify the common themes. Findings: Thematic differences and commonalities were found in thelived experiences between bilingual and monolingual Spanish-speaking Mexican American mothers in the preoperative and post-surgery phase. Conclusion: The lived experiences of Mexican American mothers regarding their children\u27s surgery are shaped by language barriers and sociocultural factors. The findings of this study could inform health care providers on how to prepare Mexican American mothers about their children\u27s surgery requiring general anesthesia

Impact of model complexity and precipitation data products on modeled streamflow

    No full text
With the proliferation of remote sensing platforms as well as numerous ground products based on weather radar estimation, there are now multiple options for precipitation data beyond traditional rain gauges for which most hydrologic models were originally designed. This study evaluates four precipitation products as input for generating streamflow simulations using two hydrologic models that significantly vary in complexity. The four precipitation products include two ground products from the National Weather Service: the Multi-sensor Precipitation Estimator (MPE) and rain gauge data. The two satellite products come from NASA\u27s Tropical Rainfall Measurement Mission (TRMM) and include the TRMM 3B42 Research Version 6, which has a built-in ground bias correction, and the real-time TRMM Multi-Satellite Precipitation Analysis. The two hydrologic models utilized include the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) and Gridded Surface and Subsurface Hydrologic Analysis (GSSHA). Simulations were conducted in three, moderate- to large-sized basins across the southern United States, the San Casimiro (South Texas), Skuna (northern Mississippi), Alapaha (southern Georgia), and were run for over 2 years. This study affirms the realization that input precipitation is at least as important as the choice of hydrologic model. © IWA Publishing 2014

The influence of organic organizational cultures, market responsiveness, and product strategy on firm performance in an emerging market

    No full text
Organizational culture is a strategic resource that influences a range of activities within firms, and empirical evidence from management and marketing demonstrates that it impacts performance. In this study, we investigate how organic types of organizational culture (i.e., adhocracy and clan) serve as a strategic resource to influence marketing effectiveness and performance in an emerging economy, using an extended form of the resource-based view as our theoretical framework. We posit that organic cultures, which are relatively dominant in emerging-nation firms, serve as antecedents of competitive advantage and superior performance. We selected China as the context to test the veracity of our model and use multiple informants and archival performance data to minimize common method variance. Our results support the proposed model and demonstrate that organic cultures impact market responsiveness, while confirming the critical roles of market responsiveness and product strategy change in producing superior performance. We further demonstrate a direct effect between clan culture and product strategy change, in addition to its indirect effect. Importantly, our results uncover that, although individually either adhocracy or clan culture can significantly improve the firm\u27s responsiveness, their combined effect does not enhance market responsiveness; that is, their interaction yields a negative coefficient. Additionally, the influence of organic cultures on market responsiveness varies across different industry types. These important differences, along with theoretical contributions and managerial implications of our findings, are discussed, and several avenues for future research are proposed. © 2013 Academy of Marketing Science

    No full text
Palabras clave: comunicación política, debates presidenciales, cultura política, recepción AbstractThis paper analyzes the results of a study which explored the influence of the generational category on the evaluation of the Mexican presidential debates of 2012. The findings are compared with the results of a previous study (Domínguez, 2011), in the context of the expectations generated from the 2007-2008 electoral reform with regards to the evolution of the political communication model. It is a study based on a comprehensive reception analysis where the audiences are seen as active and the process as complex and socially placed; it was also supported by categories from the political cultural concept to help understand the way in which subjects evaluate political life and identify their place within it. Consequently, the methodological strategy was qualitative: focus groups were carried out to explore the collective production of meaning around the role that the presidential debates play in the construction of a democratic political culture. It was found that the adults are more interested in politics, but also in its spectacularization and that social network sites modify the reception process of the debates. A Study of The Impact of Workplace Spirituality on Employee Outcomes: A Comparison Between US and Mexican Employees

    Get PDF
The concept of workplace spiritualty (WS) has gained importance in the last years. However, most of the research has been qualitative and focused on culture in the United States. The purpose of this study is to expand the understanding of workplace spirituality by conducting an empirical analysis of its impact on employee outcomes such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, turnover intention, and individual innovative behavior in Mexico and the United States. The research model predicts that workplace spirituality will have an effect on all employee outcomes. A total of 304 employees from different industries in Mexico and the US were surveyed. Results from PLS analysis show that workplace spirituality has a positive and significant relationship with all employee outcomes including turnover intention. The latter is different from what was hypothesized, however, a possible explanation is offered. In addition, a test of workplace spirituality perception differences between the two countries was conducted. The result indicates that people from both countries perceive workplace spirituality differently

Palabras clave: televisión digital, televisión abierta, políticas de comunicación, Estado y mercado AbstractThe paper offers a critical and reflexive analysis regarding the communication policies for digital free-to-view television (DTT) in Argentina, which launched four years ago, in the context of the new media law N° 26.522 and the competitive conditions of the television market. From the perspective of political economy of communication theory, it aims to identify the challenges for the ongoing development of the DTT which, in spite of its 82% coverage of the national population, still exhibits a low adoption in homes. The research is based on a descriptive methodological strategy that identifies a series of obstacles which make it difficult to overcome the short-run nature of media policies and, in turn, displace public interest goals and represent a setback in the advancement of the regulatory framework. Facebook: The leader among the top 500 U.S.A. companies in the most competitive business sectors during 2012

    No full text
This paper describes the employment distribution in the most competitive business sectors in terms of rankings (achieved through the 3-year % revenue-growth rate) for the top 500 U.S.A. companies on 2012; which have been classified in 25 business sectors; we decided to compare the 3-year % revenue-growth rates, because these indexes indicate if the demands for the company’s products are strong and growing; moreover, the revenue (in millions of dollars) for each business sector were included in this analysis, since during the recent years many companies have been using such revenue as one of their competitive tools, which have become a central element of the strategic management process. A nonparametric correlation method (named Spearman’s rank correlation) was selected (whose justification is explained) to estimate the correlation coefficients (p-value\u3c0.05). The service segment “Media” is presented as the most competitive business sector, which includes a group of 10 companies; heading the list by Facebook with revenue of $3,700 million

    No full text
Use of the partial least squares (PLS) method has been on the rise among e-collaboration researchers. It has also seen increasing use in a wide variety of fields of research. This includes most business-related disciplines, as well as the social and health sciences. The use of the PLS method has been primarily in the context of PLS-based structural equation modeling (SEM). This article discusses a variety of advanced PLS-based SEM uses of critical coefficients such as standard errors, effect sizes, loadings, cross-loadings and weights. Among these uses are advanced mediating effects tests, comprehensive multi-group analyses, and measurement model assessments. © 2014, IGI Global. All rights reserved
