Not only is the use of technology essential to the success of a business, but the continuous improvement of technology is a determinant factor in obtaining a competitive advantage. Electronic collaboration (e-collaboration) has made a presence in the supply chain of international trade. The logistics industry, in particular the area of trucking, has to continuously improve their technology and use e-collaboration in order to continue having a profitable advantage in a highly regulated and competitive arena. Some methods of e-collaboration used by a particular trucking company along the U.S.-Mexico border will be discussed
Ultraconvergence of finite element method by Richardson extrapolation for elliptic problems with constant coefficients
No full textIn this article, two novel Richardson extrapolation operators Pk1 and Pk2 are proposed to investigate local 2k order ultraconvergence properties of the kth order Lagrange finite element method for the second order elliptic problem with constant coefficients. Assume that x0 is an interior mesh node of the underlying mesh which is away from the boundary for a fixed distance unchanging with further mesh refinement. We show that, for both tensor product element and simplicial ℙk element, it holds |(u - Pk1uh)(x0)| ≤ ch |lnh| k+1 and |(u - Pk2 (u))(x0)| \u3c ch | lnh|k+1, where u the finite element approximation of u, | is defined in section 1.1, and k = 1 if k = 1 and k = 0 if k \u3e 1. Numerical results are provided to demonstrate the theoretic findings
Introduction to bilingual research methods
No full textThe current chapter introduces the reader to the vision and the contents of the present volume-Methods in Bilingual Reading Comprehension Research. The focus is on traditional as well as newly developed methodological approaches to the study of bilingual reading. Findings are critically reviewed stemming from the well-known behavioral approaches to those that are neuropsycholinguistic in nature. The ways in which reading comprehension is measured are critically important to the eventual outcomes of empirical work and to their theoretical signifi cance. An emphasis is placed on the advantages and the challenges of using particular methods to examine language representation and cognition with caveats where necessary to inform the researcher as to the limitations or benefi ts of employing a particular technique. Overall, methods are used to understand how cognitive processes operate and how the mind interprets stimuli, regardless of the particular language that is known or spoken. This compendium is meant to provide a comprehensive overview of the methodology and empirical techniques that can be used to accurately assess reading behavior in bilingual readers and to stimulate new research directions regarding bilingual reading comprehension
Priming and online multiple language activation
No full textThis chapter discusses cross-language activation in the course of processing language by bilingual speakers. We fi rst discuss the cross-modal lexical priming paradigm (CMLP), a powerful tool to explore online multiple language activation. We next provide an overview of research concerning multiple language activation in the course of bilingual lexical processing. Finally, we present results of four experiments examining the effects of context in connected speech on crosslanguage priming in Spanish-English bilinguals. Participants in Experiment 1 listened to sentences in Spanish, their fi rst language, and named Spanish and English targets, related or unrelated to a critical prime within the sentence. Experiment 2 was similar to Experiment 1, except that prior context was biased toward the critical prime. Experiments 3-4 were identical to Experiments 1-2, respectively, but with sentences in English, their second language. Comparable cross-language priming was observed for Experiments 1-2. Likewise, Experiments 3-4 showed similar priming patterns. However, the priming effect was signifi cantly higher for the L2-L1 language direction. Results are discussed in terms of language dominance mechanisms and the Revised Hierarchical Model of bilingual memory representation
Gauging the material magnitude, public perception, and governance of roadside litter in a rural Mexican municipio
No full textRoadside litter is an ever-present human-environmental issue in Mexico, yet material estimates do not exist for rural places. This study estimates roadside litter, by abundance, weight, and class, and examines public perceptions of litter in the rural municipio of Coxcatlán, Puebla, Mexico. During fieldwork, ten study sites were selected, cleaned, and sampled periodically to estimate the generation rate of garbage. A household survey was conducted using participatory risk mapping in 433 households across the study area to gauge concern over litter. Litter and dumping are substantial concerns for households while generation rates along Coxcatlán’s roadsides are lower than most estimates for U.S. roadsides, highlighting the importance of perception of an environmental issue amid its empiricallyderived reality. Results are contextualized within the broader framework of current and potential governance and management in the study area
Business environment, economic agglomeration and job creation around the world
No full textThis article looks at how economic agglomeration and the business environment affect job creation. The results suggest that economic agglomeration is strongly linked to job growth. Modern telecommunications, access to export markets, concentration of economic activity in large cities and capacity agglomeration, in particular, are important. In contrast, many areas of the business environment, including corruption, macroeconomic stability and infrastructure are not robustly linked to job growth. The main exception to this is that areas of the business environment directly related to labour markets are more consistently linked to job growth than other areas of the business environment

No full textLos cambios en la política internacional desde el final de la Guerra Fría han obligado a los estudios de comunicación internacional a una autorevisión permanente. Los actores internacionales se han vuelto difusos y el más reciente terror político resulta difícil de entender desde América Latina, por su impacto mediático sin precedentes pero también por sus atentados contra objetivos culturales (publicaciones satíricas, periodistas, museos, universidades). La docencia de comunicación afronta ahora nuevos retos. Por un lado debe actualizarse y encontrar maneras innovadoras de explicar temas de la Guerra Fría que siguen vigentes pero que se han transformado y por el otro debe explicar un panorama con nuevos actores, nuevos usos de las tecnologías y nuevos problemas comunicacionales. Este artículo propone abordar la docencia de la comunicación internacional estudiando las consecuencias dramáticas de las representaciones de Mahoma en el periódico danés Jyllands-Posten, en el video de YouTube Innocence of Muslims y en el semanario satírico francés Charlie Hebdo. Para ello, sugiere centrarse en cuatro temas cruciales para la disciplina: el modelo de responsabilidad social de los medios, el flujo de la información y la comunicación, la censura y las intervenciones gubernamentales y la influencia política y comunicacional de las nuevas tecnologías
