    Online Activities through Social Media by High Education Students: Business vs. Informatics

    Online Social Networks (OSN) are the new tools that students are using to interact, communicate and collaborate for school work. The impact on school activities, as well as the communication mechanisms among students, have just started to be studied. This research focuses on this issue, trying to answer the question: How do college students use OSN to improve communication and exchange knowledge? For this purpose we used the application of two online surveys applied to students of business administration (BBA - Bachelor in Business Administration) and informatics management (BIM – Bachelor in Informatics Management) students in 2010 and 2012 in Mexico. Our findings reveal that business administration students are the ones that use these kinds of platforms more frequently for sharing information and communicating with their peers. The comparison of these two surveys shows how the behavior and activities among students have changed

    Wikipedia and e-collaboration research: Opportunities and challenges

    Wikipedia\u27s precursor started in the year 2000 as a traditional online encyclopedia with content controlled by a small group of experts. In 2013 Wikipedia\u27s current usercontrolled incarnation was such a successful enterprise that an asteroid was named after it. The authors briefly discuss key opportunities and challenges in e-collaboration research on Wikipedia. The opportunities refer to studies on the impact of Wikipedia on individuals and organizations, as well as on the spontaneous formation of online communities. The main challenges discussed refer to the consensus-building nature of content creation in Wikipedia, making practical applications of findings somewhat limited, as well as data compilation difficulties

    A discontinuous Galerkin least-squares finite element method is proposed to solve coupled reaction–diffusion equations with singular perturbations. This method produces solutions without numerical oscillations when uniform meshes are used. Numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the efficiency of the method

    Preferences For Supervisors’ Characteristics By Hispanic Supervisees

    The purpose of this study was to identify the preferences Hispanic counseling graduate students and professional counselors have for an ideal supervisor. Acculturation and professional experience of participants were compared to their supervisory working alliance and supervisory styles preferences. Participants voluntarily completed a series of questionnaires using an online website: a demographic questionnaire, Acculturation Rating Scale for Mexican Americans II Scale 1 (ARSMA II Scale 1), Supervisory Working Alliance Inventory (SWAI) and the Supervisory Styles Inventory (SSI). The results of a series of simple linear regressions showed that Mexican oriented Hispanic supervisees focus on rapport in the supervisory working alliance. It was also found that Mexican oriented Hispanic supervisees preferred client focus in their supervisory working alliance, a factor that could have influenced this outcome was that the majority of participants consisted of Hispanic counseling graduate students. Based on the findings of this study it is important for supervisors working with Hispanics not to neglect the relational aspects of supervision when focusing on task oriented interventions

    Non-normality propagation among latent variables and indicators in PLS-SEM simulations

    Structural equation modeling employing the partial least squares method (PLS-SEM) has been extensively used in business research. Often the use of this method is justified based on claims about its unique performance with small samples and non-normal data, which call for performance analyses. How normal and non-normal data are created for the performance analyses are examined. A method is proposed for the generation of data for exogenous latent variables and errors directly, from which data for endogenous latent variables and indicators are subsequently obtained based on model parameters. The emphasis is on the issue of non-normality propagation among latent variables and indicators, showing that this propagation can be severely impaired if certain steps are not taken. A key step is inducing non-normality in structural and indicator errors, in addition to exogenous latent variables. Illustrations of the method and its steps are provided through simulations based on a simple model of the effect of e-collaboration technology use on job performance

    Bilingual reading: The visual moving window

    This chapter critically reviews the self-paced visual moving window (VMW) technique and its variants as used in the bilingual reading literature. In the fi rst section, we provide a general overview of some of the variables known to compromise the validity of an experimental task, or an experiment in general. In the second section, we review bilingual reading experiments investigating the effects of code-switched or mixed- language sentences (e.g., Andrea dropped the LETTER /CARTA in the mailbox) as a function of context, word frequency, grammatical gender (masculine, feminine), and cognates (words with overlapping orthographical and meaning across languages) vs. homographs (words with overlapping orthographical representations but different meaning across languages). Finally, task strengths and weaknesses are discussed. We conclude by suggesting directions for future research and how this task can be used in conjunction with other tasks to explore bilingual sentence processing

    Cinemagoing en Barcelona: una proyección al futuro mediante la experiencia de consumo de los espectadores jóvenes

    Este artículo presenta los resultados del análisis de la experiencia sociocultural del acto de ir al cine que tienen los jóvenes de la ciudad de Barcelona, en un rango de edad comprendido entre 20 y 30 años de edad. Nuestro objetivo principal ha sido el estudio de las transformaciones que se producen en esta experiencia, en los cambios de percepción de la infancia a la juventud pasando por la adolescencia, para encontrar los puntos comunes y divergentes de la experiencia de ir al cine. Nos hemos basado en la metodología de entrevista en profundidad sobre una muestra de 20 sujetos, donde han quedado representados ambos sexos, toda la gama de edades y los diferentes distritos de Barcelona. En las conclusiones demostramos que es necesario analizar y comprender la manera más reciente en la que ha variado la forma de consumir cine para poder sentar las bases de lo que será su consumo en el futuro. Abstract: This article presents the results of analysis the sociocultural experience of the act of going to the cinema of young people at the city of Barcelona, in an age range between 20 and 30 years old. Our main objective has been the study of the transformations that happen in this experience, perception changes from childhood to youth through adolescence, to find the common and divergent points of the movie-going experience. We have relied on in-depth interview methodology on a sample of 20 subjects, which have been represented both sexes, the whole range of ages and different districts of Barcelona. The conclusions show that it is necessary to analyze and understand the latest way that has changed the way people consume cinema to lay the groundwork for what will be their future consumption.     Prolactin Gene Duplication within the Family Cichilidae

    The prolactin gene has undergone a duplication event within the cichlid lineage, producing two distinct forms of prolactin (PRL188 and PRL177). The hormone prolactin is critical for regulating parental care in many species. Cichlid fishes exhibit a wide variety of parental care strategies, including maternal-only, paternal-only, and biparental care. A recent study found evidence for positive selection acting on the duplicate prolactin gene (PRL177), suggesting that this duplication event was associated with the evolution of alternative mating strategies. Polymerase chain reaction was used to isolate and amplify genes for both prolactin hormones and two prolactin receptors from brain derived cDNAs from species in the Ectodini and Tilapiine lineages. To date, a total of 43 species have been surveyed with PRL 188 having been amplified in 29 species, PRL 177 from 12 species, PRLR I from 15 species and PRLR II from 33 species. I was able to amplify PRL 177 in Ectodini lineage, indicating that it is not Tilapiine specific. I also discovered an unexpected rate of sequence divergence of the PRLR II gene in the Ectodini lineage. In this study, I examine the evolution of prolactin genes within the family Cichlidae which exhibit multiple forms of parental care. I hypothesize that PRL 177 should be present throughout the cichlid family

    El presente texto reflexiona sobre la recepción de las audiencias en los entornos artísticos contemporáneos, en donde la diversidad de propuestas generan experiencias y acercamientos múltiples , que rompen con los paradigmas contemplativos/analíticos del arte clásico y de las vanguardias. A partir del enfoque culturalista, con las propuestas teóricas de Stuart Hall y utilizando como pre-textos algunos proyectos culturales contemporáneos que han ubicado al público en novedosas formas frente a sus obras, se propone comprender procesos como la participación, la reflexividad y la interacción social. Al establecer estos abordajes que coadyuvan a valorar las producciones culturales a partir de nuevos paradigmas que se adecuan más a nuestra época, se intenta desmontar los esquemas de contemplación/análisis que son los que se habían fortalecido para proponer nuevas miradas y emplazamientos que concuerden con las nuevos proyectos culturales. AbstractThe present paper reflects on the reception of the audience in contemporary art environments, where the diversity of proposals generate multiple approaches and experiences that break with the contemplative / analytical paradigms of classical art and avant-garde. With a culturalist approach taken from the theoretical proposals of Stuart Hall and using as an outline some contemporary cultural projects that have placed the public in new ways against the artwork, the paper intends to explore processes such as participation, reflexivity and social interaction. The approaches to be discussed play a crucial role in the interpretation of cultural production through new paradigms which are better suited to our times; therefore, we will try to dismantle the schemes of contemplation and analysis, which had been strengthened to propose a new perspective that matches with the new cultural projects.     Fate of triclosan in irrigated soil: Degradation in soil and translocation into onion and tomato

    This study determined the fate of triclosan, a prevalent wastewater contaminant in recycled waters and surface streams, when soil and crop plants were irrigated at environmentally relevant concentrations. Soil triclosan concentrations were monitored in an 8-wk and in a 16-wk study without plants to determine triclosan degradation. Onion (Allium oschaninii O. Fedtsch.) and tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) were assessed for growth and triclosan accumulation at four levels of triclosan exposure (0, 0.015, 0.15, and 1.5 μg L-1) in irrigation waters within ranges of those found in recycled waters and associated receiving streams. Onions were grown for 8 wk and tomatoes were grown for 8 wk (short-term study) and 12 wk (long-term study) in potting soil. Soil triclosan concentrations increased (5-fold) with triclosan levels applied to soils alone. With repeated application, the half-life of triclosan was 18 d, with low-level accumulation in soil. Bioaccumulation of triclosan was observed in all edible portions of onions (115-435 ng g-1), primarily in bulbs, with no discernible impact on biomass. In both short- and long-term tomato studies, triclosan translocated to shoots and fruits (approaching a translocation factor of 1) at the highest level examined. Even at low triclosan concentrations typically found in recycled waters and receiving streams, agricultural irrigation presents an additional exposure route for organic contaminants to humans via commercial crops. Our study indicates that bulb crops, in particular, would likely accumulate high levels of triclosan. However, concentrations detected in both onions and tomato fruits determined here are below current human exposure limits
