    Korea\u27s blacklist scandal: governmentality, culture, and creativity

    This essay focuses on the relationship between culture and governance, exploring how the practice of government has invoked conflicts and crises in the Korean culture industries. The Park Geun-Hye regime used culture as a central engine to boost Korea\u27s national economy by adopting the new slogan, ‘Creative Korea’, to embody the country\u27s national values within the international community. However, the regime\u27s constant emphasis on creative economies came under attack when it was discovered that the Ministry of Culture and Tourism abused its authority by censuring 9,473 artists who were critical of the regime. Through an analysis of journalistic interviews with artists, critics and cultural practitioners, this paper examines how the relationships of governmentality, culture and creativity have been negotiated in the process of regime change. In addition, this paper explores how the Korean Wave phenomenon–the transnational expansion of Korean popular culture–during the past two decades has reshaped the society\u27s perception of the governor–governed relationship within the cultural sphere

    Minimum sample size estimation in PLS-SEM: The inverse square root and gamma-exponential methods

    Partial least squares-based structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) is extensively used in the field of information systems, as well as in many other fields where multivariate statistical methods are used. One of the most fundamental issues in PLS-SEM is that of minimum sample size estimation. The ‘10-times rule’ has been a favourite because of its simplicity of application, even though it tends to yield imprecise estimates. We propose two related methods, based on mathematical equations, as alternatives for minimum sample size estimation in PLS-SEM: the inverse square root method, and the gamma-exponential method. Based on three Monte Carlo experiments, we demonstrate that both methods are fairly accurate. The inverse square root method is particularly attractive in terms of its simplicity of application. © 2016 John Wiley & Sons Ltd

    Unveiling the dark side of social networking sites: Personal and work-related consequences of social networking site addiction

    Although previous research has explored the effects of social networking site (SNS) use in organizations, researchers have focused little on its negative consequences. This article attempts to fill this void by examining, through the lens of social cognitive theory, the extent SNS addiction impacts personal and work environments. The results, based on 276 questionnaires completed by employees in a large information technology corporation, show that addiction to SNSs has negative consequences on the personal and work environments. SNS addiction reduces positive emotions that augment performance and enhance health. SNS addiction fosters task distraction, which inhibits performance. Theoretical and practical implications are discussed

    Leadership style and innovation atmosphere in enterprises: An empirical study

    Existing literatures have explored the positive effect of leadership style on innovation atmosphere from a team perspective. However, much attention has been paid to transformational leadership style, whereas studies on transactional leadership style are not available. To this end, this paper explores the relationship between the two leadership styles and innovation atmosphere in enterprises. The intermediary role that trust and individual identification play in the relationship between leadership style and innovation atmosphere is examined as well. We conduct a survey on 294 respondents and run hierarchical regression and adjustment regression. The results show that (1) transformational leadership style can facilitate to build trust and individual identification; (2) transformational leadership style is more helpful for building innovation atmosphere; (3) it is easier for leaders with transformational leadership style to build trust and that trust positively affects innovation atmosphere; (4) trust and individual identity are helpful for creating innovation atmosphere; (5) trust and individual identification play an intermediary role between transformational leadership style and innovation atmosphere; (6) trust does not play an intermediary role between transactional leadership style and innovation atmosphere, whereas individual identity does. Implications from the findings are discussed

    Source Recruitment in the Cyber Domain

    Cyber-crime and cyber criminality are a growing threat in today’s society. As people gradually become more interconnected through technological advances, the potential for cyber-crime grows. As this issue expands into broader territories, new methods must be implemented as a means to combat it. One of the issues facing those attempting to police cyber-crime is that it is easier to hide and cover the evidence trail for crimes committed in cyber-space than it is for crimes committed outside it. Because of this, law enforcement and intelligence agencies are turning to a new tool in the fight against cyber-crime: sources. However, the issue of source recruitment in the cyber arena is a complex one. This research represents a first step towards scientifically investigating these methods of source recruitment. A total number of 249 Texas A&M International University students were studied across two experiments to determine the effectiveness of the social influence techniques of liking, authority, and scarcity within letters as a method of cyber source recruitment. Letters were implemented as a means to initiate communications with participants, with each letter containing a different tone and timeframe in which to respond to said letter. A 2 (letter tone: authoritative vs. friendly) x 2 (response delay: 7 days vs. 14 days) between-subjects experiment was designed to investigate whether the tonality of the letter and the response window will impact participant’s response rate. It was predicted that an authoritative tone with the shorter response window would yield a higher response rate than that of the other letters. Though data from Experiment 1 showed no significant difference between letter types or response timeframes, the results from Experiment 2 indicated that a friendly tone with a shorter timeframe for response garnered more cooperation from participants, whereas participants under the authoritative tone took longer to respond

    Academics’ “ambidextrous behavior” and doctoral science mentoring practices

    Although academics (academic scientists) are the vanguards in mentoring doctoral science students, emergent science policies increasingly push academics to venture into industrial science work with industrial scientists. This puts academics in a situation of heightened role strain given that academic life is already exacting in terms of teaching, research, and service. Now, academics have to balance between intrinsic and extrinsic demands. In this paper, we examine how academics’ involvement in academic and in industrial science activities impacts how academic scientists mentor doctoral students. We introduce the idea of academics’ “ambidextrous behavior” and apply it in three scientific activities, namely: (1) formally collaborating in academic and in industrial research projects, (2) informally networking with academic and with industrial scientists, and (3) producing patents and publications. We test the hypothesis that academics, who exhibit ambidextrous behavior, manifest mentoring practices that differ from colleagues who do not exhibit such behavior. We adduce evidence from a face-to-face survey of 104 East Asian chemical science professors, and analyze data using principal component and regression analyses. Our results provide insights on how academics’ involvement in both academic and industrial science activities shapes the way doctoral students are mentored. Our work also exemplifies how the concept of ambidextrous behavior can be applied in examining aspects of scientific apprenticeship in academia at a time when knowledge production increasingly takes place at the intersecting sectors of Etzkowitz’s (Res Policy 27(8):823–833, 1998) Triple Helix science (i.e., academia, government, and industry)

    Do older programmers perform as well as young ones? Exploring the intermediate effects of stress and programming experience

    There is a widespread perception that older adults are underperformers when compared with younger adults in tasks that involve intense use of technology, such as computer programming. Building on schema theory, we developed a research model that contradicts this perception. To provide an initial test of the model, we conducted a computer programming experiment involving 140 student participants majoring in technology-related areas with ages ranging from 19 to 54 years. The participants were asked to develop, under some time pressure, a simple software application. The results of our analyses suggest that age was positively associated with programming experience and perceived stress, that programming experience was positively associated with programming performance, and that perceived stress was negatively associated with programming performance. A moderating effect analysis suggests that as programming experience increased, the association between perceived stress and programming performance weakened; going from strongly negative toward neutral. This happened even as age was controlled for. When taken together, these results suggest that the widespread perception that older adults are underperformers is unwarranted. With enough programming experience, older programmers generally perform no better or worse than young ones

    Should bootstrapping be used in pls-sem? Toward stable p-value calculation methods

    The use of the partial least squares (PLS) approach for structural equation modeling (SEM) has been experiencing explosive growth, particularly in the last few years. The calculation of p-values is extensively used for hypothesis testing in PLS-SEM. Such calculation typically relies on standard errors estimated via bootstrapping. This leads to unstable p-values and prohibitive computational demands when very large samples are analyzed. We discuss two calculation methods relying on exponential adjustment that generate stable standard errors and p-values, and that have minimal computational requirements. A Monte Carlo experiment shows that the methods yield estimates of the actual standard errors that are generally consistent with bootstrapping, and often more precise. The methods are implemented as part of the software WarpPLS, starting in version 5.0

    The bilingual brain

    The brain is a dynamic system-it is shaped by everything we do, perceive, or otherwise experience. In particular, brain structure and function are heavily affected by acquiring a skill through frequent practice and feedback. Neurobiologists have documented changes in the brain that result from skill acquisition such as the ability to play an instrument, chess, and video games. Managing two languages, a skill often acquired early during development, is arguably one of the most frequently engaged skills in daily life and over a lifetime. As such, bilingualism is a well-studied skill that is known to affect both brain structure and function
