Violencia simbólica en el campo periodístico de Sonora, México
No full textEl concepto de violencia simbólica se refiere al conjunto de estrategias simbólicas que, en un campo social, promueven la reproducción del mismo favoreciendo a los grupos que ostentan el poder. Partiendo de que en el campo del periodismo mexicano, el poder se concentra en agentes empresariales, funcionarios públicos y los partidos políticos mientras que los reporteros se ven afectados por fenómenos como la precariedad laboral y agresiones de diversa índole, en el presente artículo se identifican las formas en que la violencia simbólica se expresa en dicho ámbito así como las representaciones y prácticas mediante las cuales los reporteros negocian o se oponen a aquéllas. Se trabajó con el método de relato de vida temático, con una muestra estructural de 13 reporteros, aprovechando el potencial de dicha estrategia para visibilizar aspectos de la construcción de identidades individuales en paralelo con las sociales. A manera de propuesta se sugiere que el contradiscurso de los reporteros analizados pueda ser capitalizado en nuevas formas de pensar, enseñar y ejercer el periodismo

No full textEl estudio se inscribe en el análisis de la comunicación política internacional en la era del internet 2.0, y enfatiza en la relación que se establece entre el Presidente Trump y México, a fin de mantener clara la distancia que también se establece entre aquél y diversos sectores de su país e incluso de su base de votantes. La exposición comienza con una presentación de las relaciones entre los Estados Unidos de América con otros países, en especial México, y el giro que dan las formas con la llegada del nuevo Presidente y el uso de la plataforma Twitter. Este medio y sus aplicaciones por parte de distintos jefes de Estado son analizados en la siguiente sección del documento. El apartado sobre diplomacia digital revisa la literatura general que se ha publicado sobre las condiciones en que la incorporación de los recursos horizontales de comunicación han sido usados para complementar las prácticas diplomáticas. Un siguiente grupo de fuentes es analizado en las formas como repercuten en las relaciones internacionales. Finalmente, se aborda el registro de las particularidades del uso que Donald Trump hace de Twitter, especialmente para empujar la agenda en sus relaciones con México, e imponer condiciones de negociación
Influence of acute consumption of caffeine vs. placebo over Bia-derived measurements of body composition: A randomized, double-blind, crossover design
No full textBackground: Bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) is often used to estimate total body water (TBW), intracellular body water (ICW), extracellular body water (ECW), and body fat percentage (BF%). A common restriction for BIA analysis is abstinence from caffeine 12-h prior to testing. However, research has yet to determine whether the consumption of caffeine influences BIA testing results. The purpose of this study was to determine if the consumption of caffeine influences BIA-derived BF% and body water values in habitual caffeine users. Methods: Twenty apparently healthy males (26.6 ± 4.1 years) identified as habitual caffeine consumers (≥ one 95 mg serving per day ≥ four days per week) participated in this study. Participants came to the lab on three occasions, the first visit serving as the control (CON) with no supplementation. The remaining two visits were performed in a randomized double-blind, cross-over fashion. Participants consumed 200 mg of dextrose (PLA) or caffeine (CAF) in capsule form. During each visit, seven multi-frequency BIA measurements were conducted before (PRE) and after (15-min, 30-min, 45-min, 60-min, 75-min, 90-min) consumption. Results: Repeated measures ANOVA revealed BF% for CAF was lower than the CON and PLA conditions at PRE and 15-min (p \u3c 0.001, p = 0.004), but not statistically significant for the remaining time points (i.e., 30-, 45-, 60-, 75-, and 90-min). However, the effect size (ES) of the BF% differences were trivial. The CON, PLA, and CAF conditions had higher PRE ICW values than their associated post time points (i.e., 15-, 30-, 45-, 60-, 75-, and 90-min). Similar to BF%, ES of the mean differences for ICW were trivial. No other differences were observed. Conclusion: Caffeine consumption in habitual users produced trivial changes in TBW, ECW, ICW, or BF%. Therefore, the pre-testing guidelines for caffeine consumption may not be necessary in habitual caffeine consumers
Perceptions of Corruption: An Empirical Study Controlling for Survey Bias
No full textSurvey data on corruption are widely used to construct corruption indices, but are hardly questioned. How do individual experiences shape perceptions of corruption? Do more work-engaged respondents perceive corruption as a bigger obstacle to business operations than others? What role does answer bias play in corruption surveys? This article brings together several strands of literature to discuss these questions, and tests them empirically with survey data from Bangladesh and Sri Lanka. We find that individuals who are more work engaged report corruption as a bigger obstacle. So did respondents who were previously exposed to corruption. We control for possible answer bias by implementing a randomized response technique, and find that corruption tends to be under-reported. The effects of work engagement and prior exposure to corruption are more pronounced when the bias indicator is considered, and again become stronger once we control for answer bias affecting past experiences with corruption
Computational experiment of critical event tabu search for the general integer multidimensional knapsack problem
No full textIn this paper, we propose a critical event tabu search meta-heuristic for the general integer multidimensional knapsack problem (GMDKP). Variations of GMDKP have enormous applications, and often occur as a sub-problem of more general combinatorial problems. For the special case of binary multidimensional knapsack problems (BMDKP) there are variety of heuristics, mostly sophisticated meta-heuristics, which provides good solutions to the problem. However, to date there is no method that can provide reasonable solutions to realistic size GMDKP. To the best of our knowledge there are only three heuristics published in the literature for GMDKP, and all three are simple greedy heuristics. There is no meta-heuristic available that effectively provides good solutions for large-scale GMDKP. One successful meta-heuristic that has proven to be highly effective in solving combinatorial optimization is a variation of tabu search known as the critical event tabu search (CETS). CETS was originally proposed for the BMDKP with considerable success afterwards. In CETS, clever use of surrogate programming is embedded as choice rules to obtain high quality solutions. The main purpose of this paper is to design the meta-heuristic CETS for the GMDKP using variety of different surrogate choice rules. Extensive computational experiment for large-scale problems are presented. Our procedures open the door for further applications of meta-heuristics to general integer programs
Channeling Libidinal Instincts in Christopher Nolan\u27s Dark Knight Trilogy
Get PDFThis thesis examines Sigmund Freud’s psychoanalytic theories and applies them to Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight Trilogy. The primary text used from Freud is Civilization and its Discontents (1930), as well as other works that help supplement the theories he poses. Freud’s psychoanalytic model is being applied to understand how civilized societies operate by repressing certain anti-social drives and re-channeling them into socially acceptable outlets. The characters and storylines from Nolan’s films are derived from the Batman comic book series created by Bob Kane in 1939. Batman Begins (2005) introduces the duality of the Batman character and the unique development that Bruce Wayne undergoes as a result of the father figures in his life. The Dark Knight (2008) represents a back-and-forth between the id and the superego, symbolically brought to life by the Joker and Batman, respectively, as well as examines the tragic figure of Harvey Dent giving in to the id. Finally, The Dark Knight Rises (2012) continues to depict this struggle as Nolan provides a resolute finale that encapsulates two alternatives Freud posed to escape the guilt one undergoes from the superego’s suppression. This psychoanalytic analysis of the Dark Knight trilogy serves to define the inner struggle every human faces and the many ways one can overcome it

Get PDFVirginia Woolf’s A Room of One’s Own, embodies her vision, her imagination of what society would be like if women were in possession of money and a room of their own. Her essay has a reassuring effect on the future of women and fiction, for she aspires the female “genius” to acknowledge their realities for what they truly are, the pain of not existing. She declares that when the female engages in the act of writing, it is crucial to dismiss all the hesitations that may impede her ability to write, despite the social conventions she may be detaching herself from. Charlotte Perkins Gilman’s “The Yellow Wallpaper,” Anne Frank’s The Diary of a Young Girl, and Alice Walker’s The Color Purple, convey Woolf’s vision that the female identity can only be realized when their hearts and minds open up to confess what is real through the act of writing. When the writer is communicating her experience with perfect fullness, which further attests that freedom and peace coexist within the writer’s spirit in order to give rise to a new identity. Through the supreme act of writing, a sense of the self, with time, results in the emancipation of a newfound persona. Women have actually gained a room, and that space must not be wasted; it ought to be “put in the form of fiction” (Woolf 115) because true beauty lies in the ways that the female persona writes herself—it is those creative forces that invigorate a whole new way of being, of existing, and there is nothing in the universe that can ever take its place

Get PDFABSTRACT The Survival of the Feminine Figure Through the Reconciliation of Nature and Logos (August 2017) Daniela Núñez Ochoa, B.A. English; B.A. Spanish, Texas A&M International University; Chair of Committee: Dr. Manuel Broncano This work focuses on analyzing and questioning the role two feminine protagonists play in a phallogocentric social system depicted within two novels. The research will explore the narrative and outcome experienced by Doña Bárbara and Janie Crawford, from Rómulo Gallegos’ Doña Bárbara and Zora Neale Hurston’s Their Eyes Were Watching God, in a post-colonial twentieth-century American continent. Hélène Cixous’ concept of feminine writing, which roots from her essay “The Laugh of the Medusa” and her book The Newly Born Woman will be the philosophical lens and medium of analysis for both Doña Bárbara and Their Eyes Were Watching God. Both women are raised in a phallogocentric society in which the feminine voice and experience is neglected. For both women to fully develop a voice of their own, they must experience a journey of hardships and repression without ever having access to education. They demonstrate strength as they face adversities, injustice and mistreatment. Yet, they eventually free themselves from the same oppressive systems that once enslaved them. Through a detailed description of two different sociocultural circumstances, both Doña Bárbara and Their Eyes Were Watching God present a public realm foregrounded on patriarchal-hierarchical values in which men have the positions of power and speech which gives them the privilege of assigning meaning to their world, culture and society. This phallogocentric social structure is based on the repression, and silence, of the feminine figure’s voice and the experience of those labelled as part of the feminine. Here, voice is much more than speech, but the experience of Janie and Doña Bárbara as they live in society through the label of “Woman.” The first chapter explores a dialectic between Plato, Jacques Derrida and Hélène Cixous that clarifies the genealogy and meaning of both the neologism phallogocentrism and the method of feminine writing. Chapter two discusses the feminization of barbarism through the character of Doña Bárbara; thus, the oppression of a feminine figure who for the phallogocentric man is the definition of non-logos or barbarism. Chapter three covers Janie Crawford’s life-story as an insurgent of a phallogocentric social system, and specifically analyses the way Jody Starks’ oppressive voice and presence is the basis of the androcentric establishment of the public realm in the town of Eatonville
