Sketching as a Technique to Eliciting Information and Cues to Deceit in Interpreter-Based Interviews

    No full text
We tested the effect of sketching while providing a narrative on eliciting information, eliciting cues to deceit, and lie detection in interpreter-absent and interpreter-present interviews. A total of 204 participants from the USA (Hispanic participants only), Russia, and the Republic of Korea were interviewed in their native language by native interviewers or by a British interviewer through an interpreter. Truth-tellers discussed a trip they had made; liars fabricated a story about such a trip. Half of the participants were instructed to sketch while narrating; the other half received no instruction. Sketching resulted in more details provided. It also elicited cues to deceit: complications and new details differentiated truth-tellers from liars in the Sketching-present condition only. Liars and truth-tellers were more correctly classified in the Sketching-present than in the Sketching-absent condition. More complications and more common-knowledge details were reported without than with an interpreter

Education or Indoctrination? The Accuracy of Introductory Psychology Textbooks in Covering Controversial Topics and Urban Legends About Psychology

    No full text
The introductory psychology class represents the first opportunity for the field to present new students with a comprehensive overview of psychological research. Writing introductory psychology textbooks is challenging given that authors need to cover many areas they themselves may not be intimately familiar with. This challenge is compounded by problems within the scholarly community in which controversial topics may be communicated in ideological terms within scholarly discourse. Psychological science has historically seen concerns raised about the mismatch between claims and data made about certain fields of knowledge, apprehensions that continue in the present “replication crisis.” The concern is that, although acting in good faith, introductory psychology textbook authors may unwittingly communicate information to readers that is factually untrue. Twenty-four leading introductory psychology textbooks were surveyed for their coverage of a number of controversial topics (e.g., media violence, narcissism epidemic, multiple intelligences) and scientific urban legends (e.g., Kitty Genovese, Mozart Effect) for their factual accuracy. Results indicated numerous errors of factual reporting across textbooks, particularly related to failing to inform students of the controversial nature of some research fields and repeating some scientific urban legends as if true. Recommendations are made for improving the accuracy of introductory textbooks

How HR Systems Affect Employee Outcomes: An Integrative Perspective

    Get PDF
Although much scholarly attention has been paid to understand how human resource systems influence employee outcomes, this line of research is largely fragmented. In this study, an integrative model highlighting how HR systems affect employee outcomes simultaneously through work engagement and organizational embeddedness is developed and tested. This model depicts that engagement and embeddedness serve as two mediators that parsimoniously explain the HR systems-employee outcome linkage. Based on two samples drawing from U.S. and China (totaling 407 subjects), subsequent statistical analysis provides strong support for the proposed model. This suggests that HR systems affect organizational outcomes through their engaging effect—enhancing task performance and their embedding effects—lowering turnover intention. More importantly, this model also highlights the differential effects of HR system components on engagement and embeddedness, implying that certain HR practices are more important in terms of employee engagement while other practices may have greater impact on embeddedness

The Relationship of Spirituality and the Wellbeing of Latino College Student

    Get PDF
The Latino population in the United States continues to grow (U.S. Census Bureau, 2012b). Besides their significant representation in the general population, national data has shown that Latinos are at great risk for health problems that usually go unmet (Center for Disease Control and Prevention, 2015). There is little research that focuses on the effects of spirituality on their well-being. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between spirituality, purpose in life, and mental well-being of Latino college students. Data was obtained and analyzed for 184 Latino college students at a Hispanic serving University in South Texas. Linear regression analyses were conducted to examine the predictive relationship between spirituality, well-being, purpose in life as well as familismo, well-being, and purpose in life. Data showed that spirituality significantly predicted mental well-being and purpose in life for Latino college students. Ways in which mental health practitioners can use this information to develop culturally relevant interventions and consider cultural protective factors such as spirituality and familismo for Latinos will be discussed

    No full text

    No full text

    No full text

Utilization of BIA-Derived Bone Mineral Estimates Exerts Minimal Impact on Body Fat Estimates via Multicompartment Models in Physically Active Adults

    No full text
The purpose of this study was to compare body fat estimates and fat-free mass (FFM) characteristics produced by multicompartment models when utilizing either dual energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) or single-frequency bioelectrical impedance analysis (SF-BIA) for bone mineral content (BMC) in a sample of physically active adults. Body fat percentage (BF%) was estimated with 5-compartment (5C), 4-compartment (4C), 3-compartment (3C), and 2-compartment (2C) models, and DXA. The 5C-Wang with DXA for BMC (i.e., 5C-WangDXA) was the criterion. 5C-Wang using SF-BIA for BMC (i.e., 5C-WangBIA), 4C-WangDXA (DXA for BMC), 4C-WangBIA (BIA for BMC), and 3C-Siri all produced values similar to 5C-WangDXA (r \u3e 0.99; total error [TE] \u3c 0.83%; standard error of estimate \u3c 0.67%; 95% limits of agreement [LOAs] \u3c ±1.35%). The 2C models (2C-Pace, 2C-Siri, and 2C-Brozek) and DXA each produced similar standard error of estimate and 95% LOAs (2.13%–3.12% and ±4.15%–6.14%, respectively). Furthermore, 3C-LohmanDXA (underwater weighing for body volume and DXA for BMC) and 3C-LohmanBIA (underwater weighing for body volume and SF-BIA for BMC) produced the largest 95% LOAs (±5.94%–8.63%). The FFM characteristics (i.e., FFM density, water/FFM, mineral/FFM, and protein/FFM) for 5C-WangDXA and 5C-WangBIA were each compared with the “reference body” cadavers of Brozek et al. 5C-WangBIA FFM density differed significantly from the “reference body” in women (1.103 ± 0.007 g/cm3; p \u3c 0.001), but no differences were observed for 5C-WangDXA or either 5C model in men. Moreover, water/FFM and mineral/FFM were significantly lower in men and women when comparing 5C-WangDXA and 5C-WangBIA with the “reference body,” whereas protein/FFM was significantly higher (all p ≤ 0.001). 3C-LohmanBIA and 3C-LohmanDXA produced error similar to 2C models and DXA and are therefore not recommended multicompartment models. Although more advanced multicompartment models (e.g., 4C-Wang and 5C-Wang) can utilize BIA-derived BMC with minimal impact on body fat estimates, the increased accuracy of these models over 3C-Siri is minimal
