Effective heuristic for large-scale unrelated parallel machines scheduling problems

    No full text
This paper is concerned with non-preemptive scheduling of large-scale unrelated parallel machines (UPM) with the objective of minimizing total weighted completion times (TWCT). We propose a sequential improvement local search algorithm using multiple-jump strategy embedded within Tabu search (TS) components for TWCT, and use a highly efficient data structure to provide a necessary and sufficient condition for local optimality of a solution. We will generate a set of large-scale test problems to evaluate the performance of proposed algorithm in term of scalability, solution quality and efficiency. The non-parametric tests of algorithm components will be used to validate the consistent performance across problem types and problem sizes in the proposed algorithm

Perceived Level Of Use Of Force By Police: The Impact Of Video Mode Of Delivery

Law enforcement officers have been entrusted for over 200 years to protect and serve our communities and citizens. Although this trust has been placed in the hands of our most highly braved citizens, it seems that such entrustment can be violated by law enforcement officers when conducting an arrest. Throughout the years there have been incidents where the trust placed in law enforcement officers has been tested. Furthermore, as has been seen in recent months, sometimes violation of this trust leads to brutality and fatal officer-involved shooting incidents. This research investigated whether an arrest is viewed differently by our citizens in light of these incidents of police brutality documented in the media. The central aim of this thesis was to investigate whether a muting of the audio on a video depicting police brutality, as the media often does when showing such footage, affects the level of perceived violence. Furthermore, another aim of this thesis was to investigate whether higher levels of education impacts ratings of the justifiability of perceived violence. This research data revealed that there was a statistical significant association when audio was present or absent, but revealed no statistical significant association throughout education year level

Propuestas temáticas de oposición en plataformas electorales y spots político-electorales: El caso del PAN, PRD y MORENA en las elecciones a gobernador en el Estado de México 2017

    No full text

Traducción y análisis: The Tecate Journals: Seventy Days on the Rio Grand, Un Libro de Keith Bowden

    Get PDF
Translation is an art and a craft that can be improved with practice and by critically reflecting on the process. In addition, the analysis of translation contributes to the development of theory. This thesis presents a translation and its analysis of the techniques applied during the process. Three fragments of Keith Bowden’s (2007) book The Tecate Journals: Seventy Days on the Rio Grande were translated. Bowden offers a chronicle of what he experienced while boating down the Rio Grande along the Mexican-American border. It is a book aimed primarily at the rafting and adventure sports enthusiasts. However, it also deals with a variety of issues such as river pollution, drug trafficking, and the overall conditions of those living on its banks. The author offers a different perspective of the river. The translation of these fragments offers the Spanish-speaking audience an opportunity to explore this important waterway in a way that has never been done before. The analysis of the translation identifies some of the challenges the translator faced during the process and explains the different translation techniques applied to overcome them, all informed by the theory found in translation manual

Associations of body adiposity index, waist circumference, and body mass index in young adults

    No full text
Background & aims: The Body Adiposity Index (BAI) is an anthropometric measure developed to estimate body composition in field settings. Although this novel measure has been validated against clinical measures of adiposity (%Fat), the relative accuracy of other anthropometric measures, such as Body Mass Index (BMI), and waist circumference (WC), have not been assessed in comparison to the BAI using a 4-compartment (4C) model. Purpose: The primary aim of this study was to examine the association between BMI, WC, BAI, and %Fat in young adults, and determine the relative accuracy of each anthropometric measure when predicting %Fat. Methods: BMI, WC, and BAI were assessed in a sample of young adults (n = 188, 48.4% female, 21.8 ± 4.8 years). %Fat assessed using the 4C model was derived from underwater weighing for body density, dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry for bone mineral content, and bioimpedance spectroscopy for total body water. Bivariate associations were assessed using Pearson\u27s r, with the relative accuracy of each measure assessed using multivariate linear regression and compared using Akaike\u27s information criterion, R 2 and ΔR 2 statistics. Results: BMI, WC, and BAI were associated with %Fat (r = 0.192, 0.194, and 0.668, respectively, all p \u3c.01). WC and BAI collectively explained 46.3% of the variation in %Fat, and removing BAI significantly reduced model fit (p \u3c.001). When stratified by sex, BAI provided greater accuracy when predicting %Fat beyond WC in men (ΔR 2 = 2.6%, p =.022), but not women (ΔR 2 = 2.1%, p =.078). Conclusion: WC and BAI are more strongly associated with %Fat as measured by the 4C model than BMI in young adults

Continuity and change in pipestone sources at Great Bend aspect and Wichita sites

    No full text
Previous research has focused on identifying the various sources for pipestone that were used prehistorically, including Kansas pipestone, Minnesota pipestone, and Wisconsin pipestone. During the current study, in which pipestone artifacts from Great Bend aspect and Wichita sites were sourced, it was revealed that James Gundersen had located the source of Kansas pipestone in Jasper, Minnesota. He alluded to it in previous studies [Gundersen, James N., and Joseph A. Tiffany (1986) Nature and Provenance of Red Pipestone from the Wittrock Site (130B4), Northwest Iowa. North American Archaeologist 7(1):45–67], but never published the significant finding. The results of this mineralogical sourcing study found that prior to and during the Great Bend aspect occupation in Kansas, Kansas pipestone was the primary material used in pipe manufacture. This differs from the two eighteenth-century Wichita sites in Oklahoma where the majority of the pipestone was Minnesota pipestone. Multiple factors are proposed to explain this shift, including tension with neighbors and increased European influences

Social integration and suicidality: The case of U.S. hispanic adolescents

    No full text
We examined how Hispanic adolescents’ integration with family, peer, and religion is associated with suicidality; and how substance use mediates between suicidality and integration. Using logistic regression, our secondary data analysis of a nationally representative sample of Hispanic adolescents revealed that familial integration was associated with a low likelihood of suicide attempt, while peer integration was associated with high likelihood of suicidal thoughts. Although religious integration was not directly associated with suicidality, this was associated with a low likelihood of drug use: drug use is a robust predictor of suicidality. These observed differences in the direction of associations underscore how integration does not necessarily associate with a low likelihood of suicidality; rather, integration may either be negatively, positively, or not even associated with suicidality. Furthermore, the observed mediating role of drug use suggests that improvement in the early detection of suicidality might lie at the nexus of social integration and substance use

A unified view of parallel machine scheduling with interdependent processing rates

    No full text
In this paper, we are concerned with the problem of scheduling n jobs on m machines. The job processing rate is interdependent and the jobs are non-preemptive. During the last several decades, a number of related models for parallel machine scheduling with interdependent processing rates (PMS-IPR) have appeared in the scheduling literature. Some of these models have been studied independently from one another. The purpose of this paper is to present two general PMS-IPR models that capture the essence of many of these existing PMS-IPR models. Several new complexity results are presented. We discuss improvements on some existing models. Furthermore, for an extension of the two related PMS-IPR models where they include many resource constraint models with controllable processing times, we propose an efficient dynamic programming procedure that solves the problem to optimality

Does “Being There” Matter? The Impact of Web-Based and Virtual World\u27s Shopping Experiences on Consumer Purchase Attitudes

    No full text
The use of virtual worlds as an emerging technology is already having a significant impact on business to consumer commerce and on corporate Internet retailing strategies. This research investigates consumer behavior in e-commerce retail environments, particularly with respect to consumer attitudes toward using virtual world\u27s shopping compared to web-based, online shopping for real-world items. We investigate two forms of presence, perceived social presence and telepresence, and their effect on attitudes toward e-commerce, attitudes that ultimately influence the consumer\u27s intention to shop using a particular e-commerce environment. Key implications of this research for researchers and practitioners are discussed
