   CARE OF THE CAREGIVER 
Caregiving means caring for others, whether friends or relatives, who have health 
problems or disabilities and need assistance. In the past decade care has gone 
beyond the tasks of transportation, shopping, household chores and personal care. 
Administering oral and parenteral medications, performing wound care and 
monitoring signs and symptoms are a few of the more demanding yet routine tasks. 
 
Caregivers often face high levels of stress and extreme demands on their time, 
energy and finances.  The following articles are intended to help the caregiver’s

DEHYDRATION 
 
Dehydration is the loss of water and salts essential for normal body function, and 
occurs when the body loses more fluid than it takes in. While everyone is at risk for 
dehydration, it is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children and the

Urinary tract infections occur in two out of every 100 people. Each year, 8 
million to 10 million visits to doctors are for urinary tract infections. Infections 
of the urinary tract are common—only respiratory infections occur more

PATIENT SATISFACTION 
 
As hospitals experience growing pressure to increase the quality of their outcomes, 
enhance the safety of their patients and lower the cost of care, greater attention is 
given to patient satisfaction. Numerous studies indicate that satisfied patients 
recover faster. Patient satisfaction is good medicine and good business.  There are

COUGH 
 
Cough is the fifth most common symptom for which outpatient care 
is sought. It is responsible for approximately 30 million physician 
visits annually, and the cost of treating cough in the U.S. exceeds 
$1 billion annually. A cough is considered chronic when it persists 
for 3 or more weeks. Cough can be a symptom of many underlying 
diseases.

BARIATRIC SURGERY 
 
Obesity recently has been called an epidemic. In the United States, more than 60% of 
adults are overweight. For patients with morbid obesity, surgery is the only treatment 
known to produce sustained weight loss and to reduce comorbidities. It is estimated that 
more than 100,000 of these procedures will be done in 2004.

SMOKING CESSATION 
Nicotine is one of the most heavily used addictive drugs in the 
United States. In 2003, 29.8 percent of the U.S. population 12 and 
older, 70.8 million people, used tobacco.  This figure includes 3.6 
million young people age 12 to 17. Tobacco use remains the leading 
preventable cause of death in the United States, causing more than 
440,000 deaths each year and resulting in an annual cost of more 
than $75 billion in direct medical costs.  Cigarette smoking accounts 
for nearly one-third of all cancer deaths in this country each year.  If
