The Role of the Educationally Channeled Migratory Process on Immigrants’ Integration in Japan : an Analysis Focusing on Social Mind of the Former International Students
Get PDFThe educationally channeled migratory process (ECMP) is gaining its importance not only in Japan but also in many developed countries. This is because international students are deemed as ideal migrants in terms of not only their high human capital but also their high socio-cultural adaptation to the host society, who are likely to be free from any type of conflicts in their incorporation. However there are a few researches on ECMP, because it has been taken as just a temporary stay in the host society rather than a gateway to permanent settlement. The present study aims to reveal the role of ECMP on immigrants’ social integration into the host society in terms of their social mind to the Japanese society. The hypothesis is that the higher educational attainment in Japan, the higher their social integration in terms of their social mind. The data utilized is the panel survey of immigrants in Japan (PSIJ), which is the first-ever national sampling research on international students and the former ones in Japan. As a result, it revealed that acculturation/feeling of friendship to the Japanese society, and involvements to activity of co-ethnics are partially complementary/trade-off, where Japanese fluency is a key to determining them. Yet, a feeling of integration is adversely influenced by just higher Japanese fluency, and rather positively determined by their higher income. These are originally assured to be obtained in ECMP, but are not necessarily relevant with ECMP in this study. We can therefore conclude that the hypothesis of the present study can be theoretically applicable, however its actual applicability depends on the actual performance of Japanese educational institutions per se.departmental bulletin pape
Institutionalization of Skills in the Accommodation Industry : The Acceptance of Immigrants in the “Specified Skilled Worker” Category in Japan
Get PDFIn 2019, Japan started accepting immigrants under the new visa status of residence, “Specified Skilled Worker.” The accommodation industry is one of the 14 specified industrial fields recognized for accepting immigrants under the new visa status and is expected to attract many “foreign workers” in the future. This paper critically discusses the institutionalization of skills in the “accommodation” and other related industries, such as “building cleaning.” It specifically focuses on the process of institutionalizing “Specified Skilled Workers,” the contents of examinations, and the actual work specifications in Japanese hotels using the public documents from government and industry organizations and participant observation data. Even in the accommodation industry, which has been regarded as an “unskilled labor” market in the past, skilled labor actually exists. In addition, this industry also requires efficient, reliable, and emotional labor. However, there is a considerable gap between such actual work skills and the “skills” assumed in the test of “Specified Skilled Workers,” and this makes it difficult to institutionalize skills in the accommodation industry as “specific skills.” Out of the 14 “specific skill” sectors, the accommodation and building cleaning sectors can be considered to be the borderline industries that have become “specific skill” categories to resolve the problem of labor shortage in Japan. Get PDFこの論文では、理美容師の志望者に着目し、理容師志望者と美容師志望者、男性と女性とで、志望動機に違いがあるのかを検討する。さらに、男性の理容師志望者、女性の理容師志望者、男性の美容師志望者、女性の美容師志望者の4 グループで、志望動機が異なるかを調べる。データは、首都圏にある理美容専門学校で、量的調査を実施して収集した（有効回収数は268 人、回収率は当日の出席者全員）。なぜ理容師（または美容師）になりたいと思ったかを、自由回答で記述してもらい、計量テキスト分析した。その結果、理容師志望者と美容師志望者、男性と女性、4 グループで、志望動機に違いがあった。とくに、男性の理容師志望者には家業が、女性の理容師志望者には技術修得が、男性の美容師志望者には憧れ・向いてることが、女性の美容師志望者には人を喜ばせることが、特徴的な志望動機となっていた。したがって、理美容師への動機は多様であり、グループごとに特徴があった。このことは、理美容師の入職や転職において、グループごとに異なるサポートが必要であることを示唆する。departmental bulletin pape
An Application of the Lasso in Experimental Design
Get PDFWe present a mathematical formulation to construct fractional factorial designs automatically. In experiments whose designs have many factors, it is sometimes difficult to try all possible combinations of the levels of the factors because of time and cost restriction. Therefore, for each experiment, we often use a fractional factorial design i.e. a design which consist of carefully chosen fraction of experimental runs of full factorial design. The difficulty here is that the criterion of the choice varies according to the situation. In this paper, we present a method to choose experimental runs from a full factorial desgin using the group lasso. The method allows us to obtain the optimal design matrix with respect to a given criterion by setting the tuning parameters adequately. We give some numerical examples to show that we can obtain the orthogonal arrays as the solutions of the group lasso problems.departmental bulletin pape
