Stress Distribution in Axisymmetric Contact Problem of an Elastic Layer-Substrate Body with a Cylindrical and Spherical Indenter
We focus on internal stress and displacement of an elastic axisymmetric contact problem for indentation of a layer-substrate body. An elastic layer is assumed to be perfectly bonded to an elastic semi-infinite substrate. The elastic layer is smoothly indented with a flat-ended cylindrical and spherical indenter. The analytical and exact solutions were obtained by solving an infinite system of simultaneous equations using the method to express a normal contact stress at the upper surface of the elastic layer as an appropriate series. This paper presented the numerical results of internal stress and displacement distributions for hard-coating system with constant values of Poisson's ratio and the thickness of elastic layer.departmental bulletin pape

How the BOJ Has Affected Domestic Equity Markets by Its ETF Purchasing Program
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) started a program to purchase domestic equity indexlinked ETFs in December 2010 to stimulate the sluggish economy after the 2007-8 financial crisis. It initially set an annual limit of 0.45 trillion yen. It was also a temporary program, which would terminate by the end of 2011. The BOJ, however, has continued to purchase ETFs and dramatically increased an annual target value to 6 trillion yen since July 2016. The BOJ tended to buy ETFs when opening stock price indices declined. The Nikkei Stock Average (NSA) is the most popular stock index in Japan, and it is price-weighted. By purchasing NSA-linked ETFs massively, the BOJ seems to have affected the NSA’s component stocks’pricing and created an “indexing effect.”departmental bulletin pape
Who Agrees to the Control of Invasive Foreign Species, and Releasing Fish or Fireflies?
departmental bulletin pape
Questionnaire Surveys on Student’s Knowledge for Global Warming : Prompt Report about Comparative Research of the Results in 2009 and 2019
The questionnaire surveys about global warming were conducted to search the knowledge and awareness of junior and senior high school and university students in Japan. The questionnaires were taken twice at 10-year intervals in 2009 and 2019. In 2009, 1423 junior and senior high school students participated, and in 2019, 1343 junior and senior high school students and university students participated in the questionnaires. There was little statistical difference between the two surveys due to participant age distributions. The results of the surveys show that students in Japan are highly concerned about global warming. The author also found that a certain proportion of people believe that global warming is caused by the depletion of the ozone layer. In order to correct these misconceptions, SDGs and ESD in elementary schools will be important.departmental bulletin pape
Salt and Scud : The Rhetoric of the Sea in Robert Louis Stevenson's Works
Robert Louis Stevenson, who is well known for Treasure Island (1883) and Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde (1886), was born in a family engaged in lighthouse engineering for generations. Under the influence of his family business, the sea had been familiar to the Scottish writer since his childhood although he did not succeed it. For this reason, it is no wonder that he should foreground the sea as the main setting in some of his works. However, Stevenson’s representation of the sea can never be limited to direct descriptions of it. In fact, Treasure Island, which includes the scene of sailing on the sea, also indicates the geographical and metaphorical intrusion of the sea into the land by using the word “salt”. In addition, focusing on his rhetoric uncovers the fact that even his fiction without the sea as a setting is interspersed with elements of the sea. As an instance, Jekyll and Hyde is a metropolitan-Gothic novella which is set in the late-nineteenth-century London, but there are actually found in the text several expressions associated with the sea such as “salt” and “scud”. Furthermore, two key imageries—dry and wet—play pivotal roles in the text especially in terms of characterisation and descriptions of fog. Therefore, analysing these expressions will not only lead to a better understanding of the novella but also enable us to interpret it as an ocean-Gothic. Finally, turning out eyes toward The Wrecker (1892), one of his later Pacific fiction and a collaboration work with his stepson Lloyd Osbourne, we can confirm that the three works share in the same kind of rhetoric and also clarify how obsessive Stevenson had been about the sea for a long time in writing as well as real life.departmental bulletin pape
