The influence of rejuvenation conversion and gender swap by the face editing app on facial attractiveness of self and others
Get PDFThis research was conducted to investigate the influence of the gender swap and rejuvenation conversion by the face editing app on the facial attractiveness. In this research, the face images of participants themselves and others were used as the original images. They were edited using a face editing app to swap their gender and rejuvenate their age, resulting in 10 versions of images that were created as experimental stimuli (gender swap: original, swapped; rejuvenation level: 5 levels). Participants evaluated attractiveness of the entire face and specific parts of the face, as well as shape of parts of the face by using 7-point grading scale. The results showed that as the rejuvenation conversion level increased, the eyes basically became bigger, the skin became brighter, and the attractiveness of entire face became higher. Furthermore, the effects of male-to-female gender swaps were not always symmetric with those of femaleto-male gender swaps. This suggests that an increase in attractiveness resulting from a male-to-female gender swap does not necessarily mean a decrease in attractiveness from a female-to-male gender swap. Effects of Career Commitment on Organizational Citizenship Behavior and Organizational Retaliatory Behavior : Moderating Effect of Job Interdependence
Get PDFThis study examined whether career commitment impacts organizational citizenship behavior (OCB) and organizational retaliatory behavior (ORB). We hypothesized that individuals with high career commitment perform more OCB and less ORB when they work in a context where they strongly interact with coworkers to attain group or organizational objectives. Using data collected from 416 workers in Japan, our empirical study revealed that career commitment had a positive impact on OCB and a negative impact on ORB, which was moderated by job interdependence such that the impact was more substantial when job interdependence was high than when it was low. Community Revival and Culture : Political Role of Performing Arts in Okinawa Post-1945
Get PDFThis article explores the relationship between the revival of performing arts in Okinawa post-1945 and the cultural policies enforced by the U.S. military government, highlighting the crucial role of cultural elements in sustaining a community. In the midst of Japan’s modernization, Okinawa had many opportunities to move toward assimilation and cultural adaptation. Despite losing many of its residents and cultural assets during the war, cultural elements and distinctive “forms” were preserved. During the U.S. military government rule, Okinawa stood in stark contrast to Japanese rule, prompting policies aimed at re-evaluating Okinawan elements and facilitating the restoration and reconstruction of the area. The Shimazu clan conquered Okinawa (Ryukyu Islands) in the early 17th century. Following the Meiji Restoration, the Ryukyu Domain was established in 1872 during Japan's centralization efforts. In 1879, it became the Okinawa Prefecture with the Ryukyu Disposal. In the broader context of the relationship between Okinawa and the Japanese state, Ryukyu/Okinawa can be perceived as a peripheral region (peripheral ethnic group) that was forcibly integrated and assimilated during modernization of the Japanese state. Okinawa adapted its own language, culture, and beliefs within a hierarchical structure that positioned mainland Japan at the center and in a higher position, relegating Okinawa to a distant and lower position. After the war in the Pacific, Okinawans rediscovered and reevaluated the past hardships (especially the events during the Ryukyu Dynasty era) through theater and music. The people of Okinawa rediscovered a sense of independence rooted in their culture, even under American military rule. After reintegration with Japan, Okinawan theater and song & dance drew inspiration from Ryukyu history (particularly, events during the period of crisis, such as the Ryukyu Disposition), while also serving as mirrors that reflected various aspects of the “image of Okinawa'' as required by specific cases and contexts.departmental bulletin pape
Meanings of Movements for Reversion in Okinawa under U.S. Rule
Get PDFThe first part of the paper is led by a major question: what meanings did the movements for the reversion of Japan in postwar Okinawa have? To examine the question, the following three specific questions were formulated and examined. (1) Why did the Okinawan people demand the reversion to Japan? A. The "reversion to Japan" was an alternative claim to anti-U.S. rule and reflected hope for Japan that was considered to have been reborn after the war. (2) How did the reversion movement affect the actual reversion of Okinawa? A. The reversion movement, which developed as an island-wide mass movement, put pressure on the U.S. and drew out the Japanese government's commitments to realize the reversion. (3) What did the reversion movement aim for? A. The reversion movement aimed for Okinawa's independence by the mid-1960s. However, when the movement became Japanized in the late 1960s, the Okinawan-specific aspects of the goals were retracted. The second part of this paper considers an important issue that this study did not address: the unitness of Okinawa. The diversity of Okinawa in terms of geographical conditions, population distribution, war experiences, and location of U.S. military sites raises awareness of the difficulty Okinawa faces as a political unit. For Okinawa as an "international being," this difficulty has especially important meaning.
