    Availability of Support and Services for Aural Rehabilitation of Children with Hearing Impairment in Punjab – A Survey of Parental Perception

    Involvement of parents in rehabilitation process is of vital importance. Parental perception and satisfaction from the available support and services are the indicators of their (un)met specific needs. The objectives of the study were to assess the parental perception about the level of available support from different personnel involved in the process of aural rehabilitation and to highlight the parental needs and recommendations for aural rehabilitation of children with hearing impairment (HIC). A survey was conducted from October 2014 to January 2015 to collect demographic data, information about level of support of different personnel as received by the parents, their opinion and recommendation about further required support. The sample comprised of 30 government special education institutes from which 308 questionnaires, filled by the parents of the HIC studying in these institutions were received back. The results highlighted the poor educational and income level of the parents, increasing incidence of hearing impairment in the families of HIC, lack of available support from personnel involved in aural rehabilitation and documented parental demands and recommendations. It was concluded that future planning of provisions for aural rehabilitation may be more effective, if aligned with the requirements and preferences expressed by parents of HIC

    Quality of Education in Independent and Franchise Private Secondary Schools in Pakistan

    Pakistan has a variety of privately managed schools. Inspired by thecorporate model the large school systems offer franchise to the smallschools in the name of better quality education leading to better marketacceptability. This study was conducted to find out the difference in thequality of education provided by the franchise and independent privatesecondary schools. Ten schools of a renowned large spread schoolsystem were selected conveniently and ten independent schools wereselected from the same localities for ensuring similarity of the context.Quality of education was define dalong input, process and product/outputindicators. Opinion of Head Teachers (HTs)/ School principals wasgathered through a questionnaire consisting five point rating scale oninput and process indicators. Opinion of HTs about input indicators wasvalidated through direct observation of the input indicators in the schoolsby one of the researchers. Students’ achievement scores in thematriculation examination conducted by the Board of Intermediate andSecondary Education, Lahore were the indicator of quality output. TheHTs of the two types of schools perceived no significant difference in thequality of input and process at their schools but the independent schoolsscoring slightly better on each of the two indicators. However, theindependent private schools were significantly superior to the franchiseschools in quality of output in terms of students’ pass percentage anddistribution over grades. Thus, the claim of franchising for better qualityeducation was not supported by this research

    Stress and Coping Strategies of University Teachers in Pakistan

    The purpose of the present study was to identify the perceived job stressand stress coping strategies used by the teachers in Pakistani universities.The study used a survey research design comprising two segments: a)first section identifies how the presence of negative factors and theabsence of positive factors cause stress for university teachers in theircareers. b) The second part identifies the coping strategies used by themto explore the ways for effective stress management. The data wascollected by the instruments Perceived Job Stressors (Kanner, Kafry, &Pines, 1978) and The Coping Inventory (Carver, Scheier, & Weintraub,1989) to identify the stressors and the preferred coping strategies used bythe faculty. The data indicate that university faculty experience stressboth due to presence of negative factors and absence of positive factors.The most important stress coping strategy used by them was positivereinterpretation & growth, followed by turning to religion, planning,suppression of competing activities, active coping, restraining coping,seeking social support for emotional reasons, acceptance, mentaldisengagement, alcohol-drug disengagement, focusing on & venting ofemotions. Moreover, age of teachers influence the adaptation of abovementioned three coping strategies namely positive reinterpretation &growth, turning to religion, and mental disengagement

    Practices, Challenges and Implications of Teaching and Assessment of Cognitive Skills in Higher Education

    The key research questions of the study were to check understanding,practices and challenges in teaching and assessment of higher orderthinking skills to students enrolled in pre-service teacher educationprogram. Sequential mixed method design was applied to collectquantitative and qualitative data with the help of structured questionnairescale and semi-structured interview. Descriptive statistics were appliedby calculating percentages and means; and thematic analysis was carriedout by open coding, axial coding, analytical coding and selective coding.Quantitative and qualitative data was integrated to draw findings andconclusions of the study. The major conclusions of the study are thatfaculty in UK conceptualise Cognitive Skills (CS) as processinginformation, constructing understanding, application of knowledge,problem solving and thinking activity. They also incorporate CSs inteaching problem solving and reflective learning practices in whichlearners retrieve, generate, organise, and validate information. Theyassess CSs by open book examination, moderation of assignments,matching and comparing against Teacher Education Standards, and alsoprovide effective feedback. However, faculty do not focus on‘construction of theory’ and linking theory to practice in teaching andassessment

    Teachers’ Training Workshop on Assessing Student Learning Outcomes as Professional Development: A Case Study

    This study was conducted to analyze the role of in-service teacherstraining workshop conducted by PITE, based on assessing learningoutcomes (SLOs) at grade 5th. In-service teachers’ trainings workshopsplay significant role in the professional growth of educators. Aim of thestudy was to explore the attitudes of the primary school teachers towardsworkshops, to make them aware about the importance workshops forprofessional development and to find out teachers skills of assessing theeducational activities. A sample of 66 teachers of grade 5th was selectedas respondents for the study. Observation and informal interview wasconducted for data collection. Chi-Square was used for analysis of theobservation sheet and for interviews, themes and patterns weredeveloped. The study revealed that more than half of trainees have verylow knowledge of assessment practices and some of them were even notinterested in the workshop. The local office also showed little interest inthe workshop. In the light of findings, merit based selection, properplanning for conduction of workshops, follow-up activities, localdepartmental interest and provision of suitable facilities i.e. man andmaterial were recommended

    The Institutionalisation of Teacher Ethics in Tanzania’s Secondary Schools: A School Heads’ Perspective

Secondary school heads, teachers and students from IringaMunicipality were involved in the study. The findings demonstrate thatschool heads employed several strategies to institutionalise teacherethics, which include staff induction, allotment of weekly virtuepractices, supervising and counselling individual teachers, assemblingstaff meetings and posting ethics related placards on staff room noticeboards.The study has shown that most of the practices lacked a profoundimpact on shaping teachers’ professional conduct. The study addsknowledge to school leadership literature from Tanzania, particularly onthe aspect of teacher ethics. Accordingly, the study recommends thatschool heads should institute mentoring programmes where by earlycareerteachers are attached to veteran teachers to regularly enhance theirprofessional knowledge and behaviour. School heads should exemplifyethical conduct within and outside school premises by serving as rolemodels for the teachers to facilitate the promotion of teacher ethics.Furthermore, education officers at the regional and district level shouldprovide professional development programmes for school heads tofurther raise the awareness and confidence of school heads’ professionalobligation

    An Analysis of Teachers’ Professional Development Program at Elementary Level

    ABSTRACTThis study explores the effectiveness of professional development program of public and private sector at the elementary level. A survey was conducted by involving elementary teachers from the public and private sector, who were involved in teacher training program. A questionnaire` was developed targeting the four key factors of the training programs: suitability of the resources, quality of the content and management, competency of the trainers, and usefulness of the training program. Simple random sampling technique was applied to collect the data from the trainee elementary teachers of the public and the private sector. 750 trainee teachers from the public sector and 600 elementary teachers from the private sector were selected from the five districts of the Punjab province. The data was analyzed on the basis of four factors in the questionnaire. Descriptive statistics and t-test were calculated to analyze the data. The findings discovered a significant difference in the opinion of trainees in both public and private sector in view of the “usefulness for trainees” (p-value= 0.041).The rest of the three factors were insignificant which means trainees from both public and private sector having the same opinion about the training program. The possible reasons for these insignificant findings and implications were discussed

    Effects of Aggression on Psychological Adjustment of College Students in District Faisalabad

    Major objective of the current study was to find out the relationship between aggression and psychological adjustment among college students in district Faisalabad. Ten colleges (male=5 and female=5) were randomly selected from the population as sample. One thousand students (male=500 and female=500) were approached conveniently. Data were collected using two instruments: Adults Psychological Adjustment Survey (APAS) and Aggressive Behavior Scale (ABS). Descriptive statistics and pearson r were used to analyze the data. Findings indicated above average level of aggression and below average level of psychological adjustment among college students and a significantly positive relationship between aggression and psychological adjustment. As the level of aggression increases, it weakens the psychological adjustment. All the sub factors of aggression are significantly correlated with sub factors of psychological adjustment. It is recommended that during admission process, students’ aggression and psychological adjustment must be considered in addition to academic qualification

    Students Exploring Educational E-learning Technology of Podcasts on Fine Arts Instruction in Nigeria Universities

    The podcast is an e-learning technology which came into existence asresult of digital age, to dissimilates information but it has evolved tobecome as powerful media of instruction globally. Despite its usefulnessand relevance to the educational context, the awareness and utilise inaiding learning have not been established. Therefore, the study examinedthe effectiveness of Podcast and Lecture strategies on the undergraduatestudents of fine arts. The study also looked into how moderatingvariables of gender and attitude have the influence on fine arts whenPodcasts is used as an instructional strategy. Purposive SamplingTechnique was employed to select two study centres of University ofAdo Ekiti, Nigeria. 40 undergraduate from two intact classes to Podcastsand lecture instructional group. Podcast and Fine Arts Achievement Test(FAAT) were used as treatment while t-test statistics were used for dataanalysis. Findings indicated that undergraduate students taught fine artsusing podcast performed better and students exposed to Podcastslearning strategy had a positive attitude to fine arts. However, students'gender had no influence on their performance. Based on the findings, itwas recommended that fine arts lecturers should be encouraged to usePodcasts to improve students’ cognitive and affective earning outcomesof fine arts

    Commitment with the Teaching Profession: Demographical View of Teacher Educators

    Competent and committed teachers are demand of today’s revolutionary era to increase the effectiveness of educational institutions. We live in a high tech and high demanding age. There are sudden challenges in all walks of life, including education. This study was conducted to explore the professional commitment of teachers (teacher educators) working in Govt. Colleges for Elementary Teacher Institutions in Punjab. Three hundred and twenty teacher-educators (200 males and 120 females) were selected through proportionate random sampling from the population of 540 teacher educators. To collect data a questionnaire, Professional Commitment Questionnaire for teacher educators (PCQ-TE) was developed. The descriptive and inferential statistics i.e. t-test and ANOVA were applied for data analysis. The results revealed that the commitment towards the teaching profession increases with the increase of experience. Female teachers were more committed as compared to male teachers. Keeping in view the findings of the study, it was recommended that the social and financial status of male teachers’ educators should be enhanced for increasing their commitment level. There should be proper provision of resources and training regarding professional development of rural teachers
