INSTRUCTIONAL PROCESS COMPETENCIES: AN ANALYSIS OF CLASSROOM PRACTICES IN WORKERS WELFARE MODEL SCHOOLS
This research was designed to study Instructional Process Competencies throughobservation of classroom practices in workers welfare model schools in Pakistan.The study was designed to identify essential teacher competencies for schooleffectiveness and to find out if the classroom practices used by Workers WelfareModel School teachers are consistent with these competencies. Forty sampleschools were selected from a total of 75 on all Pakistan bases. The data collectedthrough the questionnaire, classroom observations, focused group discussion andofficial documents was analyzed using both qualitative and quantitativetechniques.Most of the teachers’ responses and results of observations were consistent in theareas of classroom management and material utilization. The teachers in WWFmodel schools, though professionally trained, did not use these competencieseffectively in the classroom.The paper recommends that teachers may be provided in-service training onregular basis. The schools at the same time should develop strategies to superviseclassroom teaching to ensure that teachers use competencies effectivel
HIGHER EDUCATION AND ECONOMIC GROWTH A CASE STUDY OF PAKISTAN
This paper highlights the role of higher education for the economic growth inPakistan. We explore the impact of increase in enrolment at tertiary level on thegrowth rate of income per worker. Estimating a growth model developed byMankiv et. al. (1992), using the annual data of Pakistan, we find a robustrelationship between higher education and economic growth in the long run. Themodel has also shown that investment in fixed capital has positive impact oneconomic uplift. Applying Johansen’s cointegration test, we show that the longrun elasticity of income with respect to capital stock is different from its share inGDP, and increase in the enrolment per unit of effective worker helps inbolstering economic growth. But, like earlier literature we also find statisticallyinsignificant relationship between higher education and GDP per worker. Thereare some fundamental reasons concerning to the ambiguous impact of investingin human capital on economic growth, particularly in the short run in case ofPakistan. First, the sharp increase in enrollment, recently, has been damaging thequality of education. Second, the unequal distribution of educational services hasheld back the efficiency of public expenditures, particularly before the reformsundertaken by higher education commission. Third, the low private return ofeducation has limited the demand for higher education in Pakistan for almost fiftyyears
A STUDY OF RELATIONSHIP OF COGNITIVE STYLES WITH STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN THE SUBJECT OF SCIENCE AT ELEMENTARY LEVEL
This paper aimed at investigating the relationship of cognitive styles withstudents’ academic achievement in the subject of science at elementary level. Asample of 511 students, studying in 8th class, was taken from five Pakistani publicsector secondary schools. The data collected through the study instruments wereanalyzed by using Pearson product moment correlation, partial correlation and ttest. Results indicate that male students tended to be more field dependent, whilefemale students were more inclined towards field independence and the lowachievers were found to be field dependent while high achievers tended to be fieldindependent. Results have many implications for teachers, e.g. teachers may helpfield dependent children act more field independently to achieve well in thosesubject areas where field independence is required
DISCREPANCIES OF SKILLS ACQUIRED DURING TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAMME AND REQUIRED IN ACTUAL CLASSROOM
The improvement of a teacher’s education is a critical national necessity. Thequality of teachers, more than any other factor, depends upon the quality ofinstructions, and, quality of instructions is largely determined by the excellence ofthe teachers. This requires that the teacher’s education institutions should be wellequipped with human as well as physical facilities.This research has been designed to cover up the following objectives: (1) To getthe opinion of the teachers trainers about essential classroom skills acquired bythe trainee teachers. (2) To identify the problems in acquiring and implementingthe essential classroom skills. (3) To point out the discrepancies between skillsthat have been developed during teacher training programme. In this respecttechnique of multistage sampling was used. At first two provinces i.e. Punjab andKhyber Pakhtunkhua were randomly chosen from the two provinces. Fortypercent teachers were chosen from the sampled teachers for classroomobservation, so hundred teachers were chosen for this purpose. An equal numberof teacher trainers were chosen from each district.The questionnaire was designed to get the response of the teacher trainers aboutthe required ad acquired skills during the teacher training programme i.e., B.Ed.and M.Ed. A checklist was constructed to carry out classroom observation of theteachers in the classroom and to see the difference of required skills and acquiredskills. Data collected through research instrument was analysed by using meanscore and t.test.Majority of the respondents agreed that the teachers have used appropriateteaching methods, made efforts to improve their instructional effectiveness, usedmodern techniques and useful skills in the classroom, and made sure that theirteaching was compatible with the class environment, used learning activities thatrequired the students to practice higher order thinking and used differentstrategies for solving the problems. The classroom observation did not supportthis perception
