I Am Pain
On a highway in Florida in the early ’80s, a small family of three ended 
up in a devastating car crash. A man watched his wife bleed to death on 
the side of the road; his two year old nestled on the grass beside her. When 
my father tells me this story, I am less than ten, not entirely sure what it 
means to have had a wife before my mother. Or what it means to have a 
brother considered only half, not wholly mine. What I am is a child that 
understands ghosts and how they haunt not only homes, but people, too. 
What I never ask is whether I would still exist had my brother’s mother 
never died that day. Then I understand that my very existence I owe to 
my father’s deep, bottomless grief. Just as my birth came about from my 
mother’s own excruciating pain. I am pain, I think.

Below the Firmament
Not quite drunk where long grass meets the lake with bluegill finning in 
the shallows and the curtain lifting on June afternoon as we kindly call 
it, tree shade here to kiss your neck and the can sweating on the arm of 
the chair warm but still welcome in this heat and the voices tumble down 
the hill behind you. For a moment at least you’re alone and perfect, like 
that fish drifting into skinny water, lost in some momentary dream of ease 
where it can all be seen coming over the light sand. Yes the lake floor slopes 
gradually to some murk where the sightless grope under cold thermoclines, 
down where feelers reach from aborted machines rusting in heaps, and 
yes the hill is one you must sweat to climb again and answer to your own 
name, but this is not pretending. It is not some satori of sandals and green 
algae and it is not pretending, even if you rise a bit unsteady and spook 
the fish with your shadow, even as damselflies skip across the film and you 
almost have the answer to a question you never thought to ask aloud. Far 
above pelicans soar pure wings without bodies and this is the firmament 
created to separate waters, ever changing yet arched right here above tree 
and dock, this is the light that comes to define each easy wave, each turning 
leaf in the blessed breezes of June.

Speak So Well
People say you speak so well. Every phrase numbly enunciated to hide any 
pain. Diction scrubbed clean of the struggle with rags and spray bottles 
of the strongest disinfectant linguistic camouflaging can buy. All day your 
words hold value if spoken with your milk voice. All day they rub against 
frustration, daring friction to kindle flames. When you speak so well, you 
can become an exception to typecasting, sometimes. Like language is a 
suit you hang in your closet every evening and take out each morning. 
Eventually, flat dialogue floats towards deaf ears just because, because in 
the end, you don’t belong, and there’s no guaranteed way to be heard, to 
know for sure they listen, to feel respected as your syllables get whitewashed 
with a smile.

Electronic Version of 2023 1095-C Forms Now Available in Workday 
 
To access your forms, click on the "Benefits and Pay" worklet under “Menu." Click the dropdown 
button for “Benefits” and choose "ACA Forms." Click “View/Print” for Year 2023. If your form does not 
automatically pop up after the processing window disappears, you can find it in your Workday 
notifications. 
 
Paper copies of the 1095-C forms will be mailed to the home address listed in Workday of employees 
who did not elect electronic copies. Employees can change their printing elections to electronic only 
for next year within “ACA Forms."  
 
As a reminder, most employees will receive two 1095-C forms this year – one from Lindenwood 
Education Systems and one from Lindenwood University, LLC.

Bruce Hornsby, the three-time Grammy Award-winning songwriter 
and pianist, will take the stage a the J. Scheidegger Center on 
Friday, March 15, at 8 p.m. Joined by the contemporary classical 
ensemble yMusic, the will present BrhyM: a performance 
showcasing new collaborative compositions, plus other favorites 
from Hornsby’s illustrious catalog.

Fall 2023 Student Learning and General Education Assessment Report Available 
 
The Office of Academic Affairs is proud to share the Student Learning and General Education 
Assessment Report for Fall 2023, which focuses on the Graduate Attribute of Global Advocate. 
Various faculty, staff, and students across Lindenwood University worked tremendously hard to 
collect and convey the results of this report and we are thankful for their time, insights, and analysis.

Now Accepting UNIV First-Year Seminar Proposals – Fall 2024! 
 
The Center for Engaged Learning is currently accepting proposals from faculty and staff who are 
interested in teaching one of our First-Year Seminars (FYS), also known as UNIV 10100 Courses, for 
Fall 2024. The deadline for submission is Friday, March 1. 
 
The concept of the First-Year Seminar is to connect our incoming students to faculty and staff 
through creative and innovative topics. Each seminar will be unique to the individual instructor, who 
will have an opportunity to share their passion for their particular area of study. We are looking for 
seminars that represent a broad range of degree programs. We are also interested in faculty that 
would like to participate in Learning Communities and/or Service-Learning related courses. 
 
The FYS courses are one credit hour. In addition to sections that meet once a week for 16 weeks, the 
Center for Engaged Learning is piloting sections that meet twice a week for the first eight-week term 
in Fall 2024. You can express interest when you complete the form. Instructors chosen to teach a 
First-Year Seminar will receive an additional $1,000 stipend. Notification of selection will occur shortly 
after submission.

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT: Sarah Marian
“I am a sophomore from St. Peters, Missouri, and I'm majoring in history with secondary
education certification! I joined Sigma Sigma Sigma in the fall of 2022, and have since
been very involved in my sorority and PHA. Last year, I was Sigma's ritual chair, and this
year I am the events manager and fundraising chair. In addition, I was a Pi Chi during
fall 2023 primary recruitment. Now, I am the Director of Recruitment for Lindenwood
Panhellenic. I was also recently initiated into Order of Omega, which is the FSL honor
society.”
International Student Fellowship (ISF) is a student organization which celebrates and supports the
unique diversity of the Lindenwood University student body. The core of this group is the
international student population, and it draws its vitality and energy from everyone open to growing
with us, including local community members. It allows for a place to make friends, so the college
experience in the U.S is more fun, meaningful and connecting. They respect and invite people of all
nations, cultures and faiths to participate in their activities. The ISF is very active on campus and
regularly hosts events that allows for an engaging way for students from all over the world to
connect.

PROFESSOR SPOTLIGHT:  Dr. Joseph Steineger
“Did you know that prior to social media, when students wanted to
voice their displeasure about something at Lindenwood, they would
create anonymous protest newsletters and post them around
campus. There have been several over the years, but the longest
lasting one was The Black Squirrel, which protested some of the
conservative policies put in place at Lindenwood during the

Dr. Joseph Steineger, the 2022-23 LSG Professor of the Year, is Associate Professor
of Philosophy. He joined the Lindenwood faculty ten years ago in 2014 and teaches
courses in logic, metaphysics, philosophy of mind, philosophy of religion, and political
philosophy. He is known for his love of philosophy, whether in or out of the
classroom, never missing an opportunity to discuss any philosophical topic. Go ahead
- try him! Whether in his introductory or upper-level classes, or extracurricular
contexts like Philosophy Club or the PPE Reading Group, he'll explore any
philosophical topic with you at length. He loves being a part of the College of Arts
and Humanities and earned degrees in Political Science and Religious Studies when
he was an undergrad, before realizing that philosophy was more practical than he had
originally been led to believe. Outside of school, Dr. Steineger enjoys hiking,
traveling, listening to music, and staying up late to binge shows and movies that he
mines for more philosophical insights.

2024 Spring Fashion Show and Market 
 
Experience the art and intricacy of fashion design through a New York-style runway show at the 
Spring Fashion Show and Market! 
 
The event begins at 6 p.m. Sunday, April 28, at the Lindenwood Theater inside the J. Scheidegger 
Center for the Arts.  
 
The evening features fashion design students, faculty, and a community designer who will showcase 
their latest collections on the runway. It also includes a reception for VIP ticket holders and a market 
one hour before and one hour after the show. Tickets can be purchased through the LU Box Office

Microsoft Copilot, an artificial intelligence tool, is now included in Lindenwood's Microsoft subscription 
for full-time employees. Access Copilot using the shortcut in the left navigation menu of 
MyLindenwood or visit Microsoft Copilot directly. Copilot keeps your conversations protected and 
does not retain your prompts or responses. If you need help getting started, view this introductory 
course in LinkedIn Learning. Log in with your Lindenwood credentials.

evaluation process. The second hour will train 
staff administrators how to complete and 
review final evaluations with their staff.
