Dr. Gavin describes the house and neighborhood he grew up in, exploring the family dynamics of the former and the social and cultural dynamics of the latter. He shares some of his family history, also connecting it to foodways and other aspects of life Down the Bay. Dr. Gavin recalls some of the games that children played in his youth, and describes his educational experiences, as well as his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement in Mobile under the leadership of Rev. William Milton Smith of AME Zion Church. Toward the end of the interview, Dr. Gavin discusses his medical career, and recites excerpts of poems by James Weldon Johnson and Paul Lawrence Dunbar

From Training to Adoption: A Study of Technology Adoption After Video-Editing Training in Higher Education
Based on the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) (Davis et al., 1989), this research examines the variables of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use as predictors of video creation usage after software training. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the technology adoption process, the study also employed the Learning Adoption Trajectory Model (LATM) (Sherry et al., 2000), to explore how faculty and staff progress through different stages of technology adoption. Furthermore, the study examined whether the barrier of time, value to the department, and priority played a role in predicting the technology\u27s usage.
The study employed a mixed-design approach, with a quantitatively dominant design and a concurrent, sequential collection of qualitative data. The qualitative section used a nonexperimental cross-sectional design based on responses to open-ended questions in the survey questionnaire and interviews. Following a four-week training course in Camtasia, a video-editing software technology, participants were surveyed to assess their utilization of the software subsequent to the training. Because training cohorts ranged from March 2021 to September 2022, participants were surveyed anywhere from four to eighteen months after their training. A total of 63 participants completed the survey for this study. In addition, data from partially completed surveys were included in the analyses, resulting n a total of 78 responses. Furthermore, I conducted seven interviews to supplement the survey data.
The findings of the study suggest that perceived usefulness significantly predicted participant usage of the software, while perceived ease of use did not after controlling for usefulness. Moreover, out of the three barriers, the results indicated that value to the department was the most significant predictor of participants\u27 future intention to use Camtasia, compared to the barrier of time and priority. The LATM model offered insights into the different stages of adoption, revealing that most faculty and staff were in the early stages of adoption. The analysis also indicated that the stage was a predictor of the number of projects created per semester, but not necessarily future intention of use. this suggested that participants in higher stages of adoption created more projects, but it did not necessarily have an effect on the future intention to use Camtasia.
To summarize, this study offers valuable insights into the predictors of technology usage among higher education faculty and staff. Specifically, the findings underscore the significance of a person\u27s perception of usefulness and the departmental perceived value of technology, in relation to their intention to use it in the future. Furthermore, LATM offered a useful framework for understanding the different stages of adoption and the predictors of project creation. This information can be used to inform instructional design and training strategies that effectively support faculty and staff in adopting technology.
This study offers practical implications for enhancing the adoption of technology in higher education settings. By understanding the factors that influence technology adoption, instructional designers and trainers can develop effective strategies to facilitated technology adoption and improve teaching and learning outcomes
Epileptic Seizure Classification Using Image-Based Data Representation
Epilepsy is a recurrence of seizures caused by a disorder of the brain in over 3.4 million people nationwide. Some people are able to predict their seizures based off prodrome, which is an early sign or symptom that usually resembles mood changes or a euphoric feeling even days to an hour before occurrence. Consequently, the natural instincts of the body to react to an upcoming attack lends credence to the existence of a pre-ictal state that precedes seizure episodes. Physicians and researchers have thus sought for an automated approach for predicting or detecting seizures.
In this research, we evaluate the image-based representation of EEG as a basis for classification and training of machine learning algorithms. We explore only the raw EEG data for images in lossless image file formats, though there are other forms including symbolized and noise-filtered that can be explored. Furthermore, we evaluate different color mapping schemes (symbolized, default, chromatic, and binned) that assign EEG data values to Red-Green-Blue (RGB) pixel values. We report the performance of machine learning algorithms such as Random Forest to accurately classify EEG-based images as either event (with a seizure) or non-event (without a seizure)
Examining NDUFAB1 Expression in Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma
Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) accounts for around 4% of all cancers in the USA. HNSCC includes cancers of the oral cavity, oropharynx, nasopharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx. Reprogramming of mitochondrial metabolism has been known to promote oncogenesis. NDUFAB1, a nuclear encoded subunit of respiratory complex I (RCI) in the inner mitochondrial membrane, is abundantly expressed at the mRNA level in HNSCC patients. Based on this finding, we hypothesize that NDUFAB1 protein expression is high in HNSCC and that NDUFAB1 expression predicts a poor prognosis in HNSCC patients. We determined NDUFAB1 expression in HNSCC using immunohistochemistry and pathology guided digital imaging and used this data, along with patients’ cancer stage, tumor grade, age, sex, and survival to determine HNSCC outcome. The results showed a statistically significant increase in NDUFAB1 protein expression in cancer tissues compared to normal controls. There was also a statistically significant correlation between NDUFAB1 expression in normal tissues and progressive clinical stage and tumor grade, along with patients’ age. However, there was a statistically insignificant association between NDUFAB1 expression and the patients’ sex and survival, as well as between clinical stages and tumor grades
