Get PDFIn this recording, Ms. Gartrell Agee is interviewed by Vickie Graham and Mara Kozelsky at the Black Education Museum in Daphne. Ms. Agee is the director of the museum. Founded and operated by volunteers, and located on the campus of the former Baldwin County Training School (now the W. J. Carroll Daphne Junior High School), the museum is dedicated to preserving history and artifacts related to the Baldwin County Training School. The interview begins with Ms. Agee reviewing her family history, and her recollections of life in Daphne and Fairhope, including segregation. She describes places to shop and socialize, beaches, and the jubilee. She describes her work as one of the first Black educators to teach an integrated classroom, one of the county’s first Black principals, subjects addressed in more detail in a subsequent interview 12-06-23. Toward the end of the recording, Ms. Agee describes the circumstances leading to the museum’s founding
